Book excerpt: APRES UNE PRESENTATION GENERALE DU PHENOMENE DE TRANSITION DE SPIN INDUIT PAR LA TEMPERATURE, NOUS RELIONS LES PARAMETRES PHENOMENOLOGIQUES CARACTERISANT LES COMPOSES A TRANSITION DE SPIN AUX DONNEES MICROSCOPIQUES A L'AIDE DES EQUATIONS DE LA MECANIQUE STATISTIQUE. EN PARTICULIER, LA COOPERATIVITE S'EXPRIME EN FONCTION DES ENERGIES DES DIFFERENTS ETATS D'UNE PAIRE DE MOLECULES. LE MODELE EST COMPLETE EN TENANT COMPTE DE LA LEVEE DE DEGENERESCENCE DE L'ETAT HAUT-SPIN, DE LA DILUTION, DE L'EXISTENCE DE DEUX SOUS RESEAUX CRISTALLINS ET ENFIN, DE LA REPARTITION NON ALEATOIRES DES MOLECULES. LA MODELISATION MICROSCOPIQUE D'UN COMPOSE BINUCLEAIRE MENE A UNE FORMULATION DE L'INTERACTION ENTRE LES DEUX CENTRES SOUS FORME D'UN HAMILTONIEN D'ISING. IL S'ENSUIT UNE EQUATION PHENOMENOLOGIQUE QUI AJUSTE TRES BIEN LES DONNEES EXPERIMENTALES DU COMPOSE FE(BT)(NCS)#2#2BPYM. AU NIVEAU MICROSCOPIQUE, NOUS AVONS ETUDIE L'INTERACTION A L'INTERIEUR D'UNE PAIRE DE MOLECULES A L'AIDE D'UN CALCUL NUMERIQUE ET PAR UNE MODELISATION SCHEMATIQUE D'ORBITALES MOLECULAIRES. CETTE ETUDE MONTRE QUE LA COOPERATIVITE PEUT ETRE DUE A UNE INTERACTION COULOMBIENNE ENTRE LES MOLECULES. FINALEMENT, L'HYSTERESIS DANS LES COMPOSES A TRANSITION DE SPIN EST RESITUEE DANS LE CADRE GENERAL DE LA BISTABILITE. NOUS PROPOSONS QUELQUES EQUATIONS DYNAMIQUES REGISSANT LE PHENOMENE ET MENONS UNE REFLEXION SUR LA BISTABILITE D'UNE SEULE MOLECULE

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Book excerpt: The Institute for Amorphous Studies was founded in 1982 as the international center for the investigation of amorphous mate rials. It has since played an important role in promoting the und er standing of disordered matter in general. An Institute lecture series on "Fundamentals of Amorphous Materials and Devices" was held during 1982-83 with distinguished speakers from universities and industry. These events were free and open to the public ,and were attended by many representatives of the scientific community. The lectures themselves were highly successful inasmuch as they provided not only formal instruction but also an opportunity for vigorous and stimulating debate. That last element could not be captured within the pages of a book I but the lectures concentrated on the latest advances in the field I which is why their essential contents are he re reproduced in collective form. Together they constitute an interdisciplinary status report of the field. The speakers brought many different viewpoints and a variety of back ground experiences io bear on the problems involved I but though language and conventions vary I the essential unity of the concerns is very clear I as indeed are the ultimate benefits of the many-sided approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical methods play a significant role in the rapidly growing field of nonlinear optical materials. This volume discusses a number of successful or promising contributions. The overall theme of this volume is twofold: (1) the challenges faced in computing and optimizing nonlinear optical material properties; and (2) the exploitation of these properties in important areas of application. These include the design of optical amplifiers and lasers, as well as novel optical switches. Research topics in this volume include how to exploit the magnetooptic effect, how to work with the nonlinear optical response of materials, how to predict laser-induced breakdown in efficient optical devices, and how to handle electron cloud distortion in femtosecond processes.

Book excerpt: This contributed volume offers a much-needed overview of the statistical methods in early clinical drug and biomarker development. Chapters are written by expert statisticians with extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry and regulatory agencies. Because of this, the data presented is often accompanied by real world case studies, which will help make examples more tangible for readers. The many applications of statistics in drug development are covered in detail, making this volume a must-have reference. Biomarker development and early clinical development are the two critical areas on which the book focuses. By having the two sections of the book dedicated to each of these topics, readers will have a more complete understanding of how applying statistical methods to early drug development can help identify the right drug for the right patient at the right dose. Also presented are exciting applications of machine learning and statistical modeling, along with innovative methods and state-of-the-art advances, making this a timely and practical resource. This volume is ideal for statisticians, researchers, and professionals interested in pharmaceutical research and development. Readers should be familiar with the fundamentals of statistics and clinical trials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume is the first publication on software engineering and computational intelligence (CI) viewed as a synergistic interplay of neurocomputing, granular computation (including fuzzy sets and rough sets), and evolutionary methods. It presents a unified view of CI in the context of software engineering. The book addresses a number of crucial issues: what is CI, what role does it play in software development, how are CI elements built into successive phases of the software life cycle, and what is the role played by CI in quantifying fundamental features of software artifacts? With contributions from leading researchers and practitioners, the book provides the reader with a wealth of new concepts and approaches, complete algorithms, in-depth case studies, and thought-provoking exercises. The topics coverage include neurocomputing, granular as well as evolutionary computing, object-oriented analysis and design in software engineering. There is also an extensive bibliography.
