Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Ethics, Corporate Ethics, grade: A, Jagiellonian University in Krakow (Cracow University of Economics), course: International Negotiation, language: English, abstract: Negotiating is essential. The world, nowadays, is more and more interactive and we find ourselves dealing with all different kinds of cultures and possibilities. It’s getting more complicated since the world opened up. We can multiply our profits by negotiating and trading worldwide. One can find a lot of interesting information about negotiation and its diverse tactics to make money, but another topic is the ethical or social aspect behind negotiating. This is something one can also not so easily deny because it’s part of the game. It is known under the catchphrase “Social Dilemma”. It’s about the conflict of the individual in ordinary life and the decision to cooperate or defect. The decision is based on the best outcome for the individual and should be for the collectivist while achieving a maximum individual result. The purpose of this paper is based on the nature of negotiation and should give an insight especially to the cooperative style of negotiations and should also touch on the related ethical point of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many social or economic conflict situations can be modeled by specifying the alternatives on which the involved parties may agree, and a special alternative which summarizes what happens in the event that no agreement is reached. Such a model is called a bargaining game, and a prescription assigning an alternative to each bargaining game is called a bargaining solution. In the cooperative game-theoretical approach, bargaining solutions are mathematically characterized by desirable properties, usually called axioms. In the noncooperative approach, solutions are derived as equilibria of strategic models describing an underlying bargaining procedure. Axiomatic Bargaining Game Theory provides the reader with an up-to-date survey of cooperative, axiomatic models of bargaining, starting with Nash's seminal paper, The Bargaining Problem. It presents an overview of the main results in this area during the past four decades. Axiomatic Bargaining Game Theory provides a chapter on noncooperative models of bargaining, in particular on those models leading to bargaining solutions that also result from the axiomatic approach. The main existing axiomatizations of solutions for coalitional bargaining games are included, as well as an auxiliary chapter on the relevant demands from utility theory.

It is a work that looks at how collective bargaining actually works. The theories and practices presented here are enhanced by the experiences of not only the two authors, but of the many practitioners who have been able to examine in a new light their experiences with the concepts discussed here.

Book excerpt: Publication of the Handbook of Group Decision and Negotiation marks a milestone in the evolution of the group decision and negotiation (GDN) eld. On this occasion, editors Colin Eden and Marc Kilgour asked me to write a brief history of the eld to provide background and context for the volume. They said that I am in a good position to do so: Actively involved in creating the GDN Section and serving as its chair; founding and leading the GDN journal, Group Decision and Negotiation as editor-in-chief, and the book series, “Advances in Group Decision and Negotiation” as editor; and serving as general chair of the GDN annual meetings. I accepted their invitation to write a brief history. In 1989 what is now the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) established its Section on Group Decision and Negotiation. The journal Group Decision and Negotiation was founded in 1992, published by Springer in cooperation with INFORMS and the GDN Section. In 2003, as an ext- sion of the journal, the Springer book series, “Advances in Group Decision and Negotiation” was inaugurated.

Book excerpt: Interest-Based Bargaining: A User's Guide provides a detailed account of why it makes sense to negotiate on the basis of interests rather than positions. It provides a detailed set of guidelines for negotiators who wish to develop a cooperative, problem solving approach to their bargaining. It draws on the experiences of using interest-based approaches in the USA and Ireland. Interest-based bargaining is an approach to collective bargaining that is focused on understanding the interests of parties and on building solutions around these. It uses problem-solving tools such as brainstorming, flip charting and consensus decision-making. This book will be of particular value to management and union representatives who are already working in a cooperative way and who wish to deepen that cooperation.
