Shannon's coding theorem shows that, for a conventional communication system with one transmitter and one receiver, there exists a capacity C for a given channel, and that communications can be achieved with an arbitrarily small probability of error for any rate R smaller than C. The converse to the coding theorem shows that for any rate R greater than C, it is impossible to make the probability of error arbitrarily small. In the report, the author determines a set of rates, the capacity region, which allow each transmitter to communicate with the receiver with an arbitrarily small probability of error. It is shown that for any set of rates outside the capacity region, the probability of error cannot be made arbitrarily small. In other words, the author extends Shannon's coding theorem and its converse to a coding theorem and a converse for multiple access channels. (Author).

For the multiple access channel with cribbing, we exactly characterize the channel resolvability region for the causal cribbing and non-causal cribbing scenarios. For the strictly-causal cribbing scenario, inner and outer bounds are provided. For the multiple-access channel with generalized feedback, we provide two inner bounds representing the role of decoding and randomness extraction, which can also be combined. Finally, leveraging the resolvability results, we derive achievable strong secrecy rate regions for each of the cooperation scenarios.

Video services constitutes a large fraction of the internet traffic today. According to a report by Cisco, 75% of the world's mobile data traffic will be video-based by 2020. This ever-increasing demand in delivering internet-based services, has been the main driver for the development of the 4G digital cellular network, where packet- switched services are the primary design target. In particular, the overall system needs to ensure high peak data rates to the user and low delay in the delivery of the content, in order to support real time applications such as video streaming and gaming. This has motivated, in the last decade, a renewed and raising interest and research in wireless radio access technology. Wireless channel suffers from various physical phenomena like path-loss, shadowing, fading, interference, etc. In the most recent technologies, these effects are contrasted using Automatic Repeat re-Quest (ARQ) protocol, which consist on the retransmission of the same signal from the same node. ARQ protocol is usually combined with channel codes at the physical layer, which is known as Hybrid Automatic Repeat re-Quest (HARQ) protocol. Another improvement for communications over wireless channels is achieved when Relays are used as intermediate nodes for helping the communication between a Source and a Destination, which is known as cooperative communication. Both techniques, cooperation and HARQ, if individually applied, significantly improve the performance of the communication system. One open question is whether their combination would bring the sum of the singular improvements, or be only marginally beneficial. In the literature we can find many studies for the combination of these two techniques, but in our thesis we focus mainly on this interaction at the level of the physical layer (PHY) and the medium access control layer (MAC). We use example protocols on a network of three nodes (Source, Destination and Relay). For the theoretical analysis of these systems we focus on Finite State Markov Chains (FSMC). We discuss the case where Relay works in Decode-and-Forward (DCF) mode, which is very common in the literature, but our analysis focuses more strongly on the case where the Relay works in Demodulate-and-Forward (DMF) mode, because of its simplicity of implementation and its efficiency. This case is much more rarely addressed in the available literature, because of the higher complexity required by its analysis. Usually, the interaction between the two techniques has been studied using deterministic protocols, but in our analysis we will focus on both, deterministic and probabilistic protocols. So far, probabilistic protocols, where the retransmitting node is chosen with a given probability, have been mainly proposed for higher layers of communication systems, but, in contrast, this thesis studies probabilistic protocols on the physical layer and MAC layer, which give more insight on the analysis and performance optimization. The probabilistic protocols contains very few parameters (only 2) that can be optimized for best performance. Note that these parameters can be computed to mimic the behavior of a given deterministic protocol, and the result of the probabilistic protocol after optimization can only improve over this one. Moreover, the performance of our optimized probabilistic protocol is checked against results of the literature, and the comparison shows that our protocol performs better. In the end, there is also discussed the issue of relay selection. In a scenario of several candidate Relays, we propose a criterion for choosing the best Relay. The performance obtained by this criterion is compared to that obtained with the reference criteria in the literature.

This thesis studies cooperation in the multiple access channel (MAC) setting,which includes the relay channel (RC) setting as a special case. These cooperative settingsapply to uplink transmission in cellular networks and form the basis to improve the widenetwork performance.The thesis proposes a time-division half-duplex scheme for the MAC with transmittercooperation (MAC-TC). The proposed scheme divides each transmission frame into threephases with variable durations. The two user equipments (UEs) partially exchange theirinformation in the first two phases, then cooperatively and coherently transmit to the basestation (BS) in the third phase, i.e., each UE performs a partial decode-forward (pDF) ofthe other UE information. The BS then performs joint decoding using the signals receivedin all three phases. After designing the scheme for the discrete memoryless channel (DMC),the thesis applies it to the Gaussian channel, derives its optimal resource allocations formaximum throughput and studies the outage performance over fading links. Comparedwith existing schemes, the proposed scheme improves throughput and outage performance,which makes it appealing for deployment in future cellular networks by utilizing the device-to-device (D2D) and infrastructure modes in the uplink transmission.The proposed scheme is near capacity-achieving when the cooperative links are strongerthan the direct links. Compared to existing schemes, this scheme achieves the same orbetter spectral efficiency with simpler signals and shorter decoding delay. By analyzingthe KKT optimality conditions for the maximum transmission rate, the thesis shows thatas the inter-user link qualities increase, the optimal scheme moves from no cooperation topartial then to full cooperation, in which the users fully exchange their information. Theoptimal power allocation to achieve the maximum throughput is analytically derived.The thesis further formulates the outage probability of the cooperative scheme overRayleigh fading channels assuming full channel state information (CSI) at receivers andlimited CSI at transmitters. Results show that cooperation can significantly reduce outageprobabilities and achieve the full diversity order despite additional outages at the UEs. Thethesis considers the RC setting in detail and analytically derives the outage performance for the coherent pDF relaying. Results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existingschemes since it employs coherent transmission and joint decoding at the destination.Last, the thesis proposes a MAC with a joint source-destination cooperation (MAC-SDC)scheme that also engages the BS in cooperation by employing quantize-forward relaying.In this scheme, the users exchange their information not only through the cooperativelinks as in the MAC-TC, but also via the feedback links from the BS. Results showachievability improvement especially when the cooperative links are marginally strongerthan direct links. Book excerpt: While the bandwidth available for wireless networks is limited, the world has seen an unprecedented growth in the number of mobile subscribers and an ever increasing demand for high data rates. Therefore efficient utilisation of bandwidth to maximise link spectral efficiency and number of users that can be served simultaneously are primary goals in the design of wireless systems. To achieve these goals, in this thesis, a new non-orthogonal uplink multiple access scheme which combines the functionalities of adaptive modulation and multiple access called collaborative modulation multiple access (CMMA) is proposed. CMMA enables multiple users to access the network simultaneously and share the same bandwidth even when only a single receive antenna is available and in the presence of high channel correlation. Instead of competing for resources, users in CMMA share resources collaboratively by employing unique modulation sets (UMS) that differ in phase, power, and/or mapping structure. These UMS are designed to insure that the received signal formed from the superposition of all users' signals belongs to a composite QAM constellation (CC) with a rate equal to the sum rate of all users. The CC and its constituent UMSs are designed centrally at the BS to remove ambiguity, maximize the minimum Euclidian distance (dmin) of the CC and insure a minimum BER performance is maintained. Users collaboratively precode their transmitted signal by performing truncated channel inversion and phase rotation using channel state information (CSI ) obtained from a periodic common pilot to insure that their combined signal at the BS belongs to the CC known at the BS which in turn performs a simple joint maximum likelihood detection without the need for CSI. The coherent addition of users' power enables CMMA to achieve high link spectral efficiency at any time without extra power or bandwidth but on the expense of graceful degradation in BER performance. To improve the BER performance of CMMA while preserving its precoding and detection structure and without the need for pilot-aided channel estimation, a new selective diversity combining scheme called SC-CMMA is proposed. SC-CMMA optimises the overall group performance providing fairness and diversity gain for various users with different transmit powers and channel conditions by selecting a single antenna out of a group of L available antennas that minimises the total transmit power required for precoding at any one time. A detailed study of capacity and BER performance of CMMA and SC-CMMA is carried out under different level of channel correlations which shows that both offer high capacity gain and resilience to channel correlation. SC-CMMA capacity even increase with high channel correlation between users' channels. CMMA provides a practical solution for implementing the multiple access adder channel (MAAC) in fading environments hence a hybrid approach combining both collaborative coding and modulation referred to as H-CMMA is investigated. H-CMMA divides users into a number of subgroups where users within a subgroup are assigned the same modulation set and different multiple access codes. H-CMMA adjusts the dmin of the received CC by varying the number of subgroups which in turn varies the number of unique constellation points for the same number of users and average total power. Therefore H-CMMA can accommodate many users with different rates while flexibly managing the complexity, rate and BER performance depending on the SNR. Next a new scheme combining CMMA with opportunistic scheduling using only partial CSI at the receiver called CMMA-OS is proposed to combine both the power gain of CMMA and the multiuser diversity gain that arises from users' channel independence. To avoid the complexity and excessive feedback associated with the dynamic update of the CC, the BS takes into account the independence of users' channels in the design of the CC and its constituent UMSs but both remain unchanged thereafter. However UMS are no longer associated with users, instead channel gain's probability density function is divided into regions with identical probability and each UMS is associated with a specific region. This will simplify scheduling as users can initially chose their UMS based on their CSI and the BS will only need to resolve any collision when the channels of two or more users are located at the same region. Finally a high rate cooperative communication scheme, called cooperative modulation (CM) is proposed for cooperative multiuser systems. CM combines the reliability of the cooperative diversity with the high spectral efficiency and multiple access capabilities of CMMA. CM maintains low feedback and high spectral efficiency by restricting relaying to a single route with the best overall channel. Two possible variations of CM are proposed depending on whether CSI available only at the users or just at the BS and the selected relay. The first is referred to Precode, Amplify, and Forward (PAF) while the second one is called Decode, Remap, and Forward (DMF). A new route selection algorithm for DMF based on maximising dmin of random CC is also proposed using a novel fast low-complexity multi-stage sphere based algorithm to calculate the dmin at the relay of random CC that is used for both relay selection and detection.

Under the first method, two novel schemes for using network coding in cooperative networks have been proposed. In the first scheme, network coding generates some redundancy in addition to the redundancy that is generated by the channel code. In the second scheme, the relay by use of the network code, sends a compressed version of the parts missing from the original transmission. The second method, involves a scheme to increase the channel capacity of an existing channel. This increase is made possible by the introduction of a new Raptor coded interfering channel to an existing channel. Through successive decoding at the destination, the data of both main and interfering sources is decoded. Finally, we generalize our work to allow the possibility of decoding either the secondary source data or the main source data first. We will investigate the performance and delay for each decoding scheme.

This growth has been accompanied by a significant increase in the number of users sharing the same wireless medium, and as a result, interference management has become a hot topic of research in recent years. In this dissertation, we investigate feedback and transmitter cooperation as two closely related tools to manage the interference and achieve high data rates in several wireless networks, focusing on additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) interference, X, and broadcast channels. We start by a one-to-many network, namely, the three-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian broadcast channel, where we assume that the transmitter obtains the channel state information (CSI) through feedback links after a finite delay. We also assume that the feedback delay is greater than the channel coherence time, and thus, the CSI expires prior to being exploited by the transmitter for its current transmission. Nevertheless, we show that this delayed CSI at the transmitter (delayed CSIT) can help the transmitter to achieve significantly higher data rates compared to having no CSI. We indeed show that delayed CSIT increases the channel degrees of freedom (DoF), which is translated to an unbounded increase in capacity with increasing signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). For the symmetric case, i.e. with the same number of antennas at each receiver, we propose different transmission schemes whose achievable DoFs meet the upper bound for a wide range of transmit-receive antenna ratios. Also, for the general non-symmetric case, we propose transmission schemes that characterize the DoF region for certain classes of antenna configurations. Subsequently, we investigate channels with distributed transmitters, namely, Gaussian single-input single-output (SISO) K-user interference channel and 2xK X channel under the delayed CSIT assumption. In these channels, in major contrast to the broadcast channel, each transmitter has access only to its own messages. We propose novel multiphase transmission schemes wherein the transmitters collaboratively align the past interference at appropriate receivers using the knowledge of past CSI. Our achievable DoFs are greater than one (which is the channel DoF without CSIT), and strictly increasing in K. Our results are yet the best available reported DoFs for these channels with delayed CSIT. Furthermore, we consider the K-user r-cyclic interference channel, where each transmitter causes interference on only r receivers in a cyclic manner. By developing a new upper bound, we show that this channel has K/r DoF with no CSIT. Moreover, by generalizing our multiphase transmission ideas, we show that, for r=3, this channel can achieve strictly greater than K/3 DoF with delayed CSIT. Next, we add the capability of simultaneous transmission and reception, i.e. full-duplex operation, to the transmitters, and investigate its impact on the DoF of the SISO Gaussian K-user interference and MxK X channel under the delayed CSIT assumption. By proposing new cooperation/alignment techniques, we show that the full-duplex transmitter cooperation can potentially yield DoF gains in both channels with delayed CSIT. This is in sharp contrast to the previous results on these channels indicating the inability of full-duplex transmitter cooperation to increase the channel DoF with either perfect instantaneous CSIT or no CSIT. With the recent technological advances in implementation of full-duplex communication, it is expected to play a crucial role in the future wireless systems. Finally, we consider the Gaussian K-user interference and KxK X channel with output feedback, wherein each transmitter causally accesses the output of its paired receiver. First, using the output feedback and under no CSIT assumption, we show that both channels can achieve DoF values greater than one, strictly increasing in K, and approaching the limiting value of 2 as K[arrr] [infin]. Then, we develop transmission schemes for the same channels with both output feedback and delayed CSIT, known as Shannon feedback. Our achievable DoFs with Shannon feedback are greater than those with the output feedback for almost all values of K.

However, as the interest in wireless services increases, the contention by nodes to occupy the medium is more intense and interference worsens. One direction with the potential to increase system throughput is multi-channel systems. Multi-channel systems have been shown to reduce collisions and increase concurrency thus producing better bandwidth usage. However, the well-known hidden- and exposed-terminal problems inherited from single-channel systems remain, and a new channel selection problem is introduced. In this dissertation, Multi-channel medium access control (MAC) protocols are proposed for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) for nodes equipped with a single half-duplex transceiver, using more sophisticated physical layer technologies. These include code division multiple access (CDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), and diversity. CDMA increases channel reuse, while OFDMA enables communication by multiple users in parallel. There is a challenge to using each technology in MANETs, where there is no fixed infrastructure or centralized control. CDMA suffers from the near-far problem, while OFDMA requires channel synchronization to decode the signal. As a result CDMA and OFDMA are not yet widely used. Cooperative (diversity) mechanisms provide vital information to facilitate communication set-up between source-destination node pairs and help overcome limitations of physical layer technologies in MANETs. In this dissertation, the Cooperative CDMA-based Multi-channel MAC (CCM-MAC) protocol uses CDMA to enable concurrent transmissions on each channel. The Power-controlled CDMA-based Multi-channel MAC (PCC-MAC) protocol uses transmission power control at each node and mitigates collisions of control packets on the control channel by using different sizes of the spreading factor to have different processing gains for the control signals. The Cooperative Dual-access Multi-channel MAC (CDM-MAC) protocol combines the use of OFDMA and CDMA and minimizes channel interference by a resolvable balanced incomplete block design (BIBD). In each protocol, cooperating nodes help reduce the incidence of the multi-channel hidden- and exposed-terminal and help address the near-far problem of CDMA by supplying information. Simulation results show that each of the proposed protocols achieve significantly better system performance when compared to IEEE 802.11, other multi-channel protocols, and another protocol CDMA-based.
