Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges traditional views of the Qin dynasty as an oppressive regime by revealing cooperative aspects of its governance. This revealing book challenges longstanding notions of the Qin dynasty, China’s first imperial dynasty (221–206 BCE). The received history of the Qin dynasty and its founder is one of cruel tyranny with rule through fear and coercion. Using a wealth of new information afforded by the expansion of Chinese archaeology in recent decades as well as traditional historical sources, Charles Sanft concentrates on cooperative aspects of early imperial government, especially on the communication necessary for government. Sanft suggests that the Qin authorities sought cooperation from the populace with a publicity campaign in a wide variety of media—from bronze and stone inscriptions to roads to the bureaucracy. The book integrates theory from anthropology and economics with early Chinese philosophy and argues that modern social science and ancient thought agree that cooperation is necessary for all human societies.

It assembles a representative sample of recent results to serve as a roadmap for the area. The emphasis is on wireless networks, but many of the results apply to cooperation in wireline networks and mixed wireless/wireline networks. Cooperative Communications is intended as a tutorial for the reader who is familiar with information theory concepts but has not actively followed the field. For the active researcher, it serves as an invaluable digest of significant results. It is designed to encourage readers to find new ways to apply the fundamental ideas of network cooperation. It is also intended to make the area sufficiently accessible to practicing network designers.

Book excerpt: The national information infrastructure (NII) holds the promise of connecting people of all ages and descriptionsâ€"bringing them opportunities to interact with businesses, government agencies, entertainment sources, and social networks. Whether the NII fulfills this promise for everyone depends largely on interfacesâ€"technologies by which people communicate with the computing systems of the NII. More Than Screen Deep addresses how to ensure NII access for every citizen, regardless of age, physical ability, race/ethnicity, education, ability, cognitive style, or economic level. This thoughtful document explores current issues and prioritizes research directions in creating interface technologies that accommodate every citizen's needs. The committee provides an overview of NII users, tasks, and environments and identifies the desired characteristics in every-citizen interfaces, from power and efficiency to an element of fun. The book explores: Technological advances that allow a person to communicate with a computer system. Methods for designing, evaluating, and improving interfaces to increase their ultimate utility to all people. Theories of communication and collaboration as they affect person-computer interactions and person-person interactions through the NII. Development of agents: intelligent computer systems that "understand" the user's needs and find the solutions. Offering data, examples, and expert commentary, More Than Screen Deep charts a path toward enabling the broadest-possible spectrum of citizens to interact easily and effectively with the NII. This volume will be important to policymakers, information system designers and engineers, human factors professionals, and advocates for special populations.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,0, University of Applied Management (Fachbereich Betriebswirtschaft), course: Communication and Cooperation, language: English, abstract: The growing significance of computer and internet as a work and communication medium can observe increasing tendencies of decentralization, mobilization and mechanization of our work. That means the interest in virtual cooperation rises strongly in many enterprises. This kind of labour organization offers the possibility of concentrating the knowledge of different co-workers and/or external specialists also over long distances (over countries or even continental borders) in a team. However, the unification of specialist and expert knowledge is made possible by the use of suitable in-formation and communication technologies only. With these aids this knowledge is (apparently) callable without any larger temporal delay. That brings substantial cost advantages by a shortened achievement completion and decreased travel times and costs and makes a contribution in such a way through cost optimization to the receipt and for the increase of competitive ability. In order to be able to ensure efficient working in virtual teams at all a set of basic conditions must be considered. Substantial factors apart organization of work and used instruments are humans involved in that process, especially their communication and cooperation behaviour. This essay will briefly examine what kind of differences in communication and cooperation exist between a virtual and a conventional (face-to-face) team. [...]

Book excerpt: Cooperative and relay communications have recently become the most widely explored topics in communications, whereby users cooperate in transmitting their messages to the destination, instead of conventional networks which operate independently and compete among each other for channel resources. As the field has progressed, cooperative communications have become a design concept rather than a specific transmission technology. This concept has revolutionized the design of wireless networks, allowing increased coverage, throughput, and transmission reliability even as conventional transmission techniques gradually reach their limits. Cooperative and relay technologies have also made their way toward next generation wireless standards, such as IEEE802.16 (WiMAX) or LTE, and have been incorporated into many modern wireless applications, such as cognitive radio and secret communications. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides a systematic introduction to the fundamental concepts of cooperative communications and relays technology to enable engineers, researchers or graduate students to conduct advanced research and development in this area. Cooperative Communications and Networking: Technologies and System Design provides researchers, graduate students, and practical engineers with sufficient knowledge of both the background of cooperative communications and networking, and potential research directions.

Patricia Covarrubias presents an engaging and original ethnographic study of approximately 550 workers in a Mexican industrial organization in Veracruz. She studies the complex interpersonal networks formed and destroyed by language subtleties, specifically terms of personal address (to and usted), and draws larger conclusions about language, culture, and social interaction in businesses and organizations_and also about beliefs and values that are central to Mexican culture. While the book specifically targets students and scholars of organizational communication, those with an interest in Mexican language and culture will also want to read Culture, Communication, and Cooperation_now available in paperback.

Book excerpt: Begging by nestling birds has become the model system for investigating evolutionary conflicts of interest within families and their theoretical resolution provided by honest signals of offspring need. In response to the recent explosions of scientific papers on the revolution of begging; we have brought together twenty-four original contributions from major researchers in all areas of this dynamic field. Organised into six sections: I: Theoretical approaches; II: Begging as a signal; III: Nestling physiology; IV: Sibling competition; V: Brood parasitism; and VI: Statistical approaches; this book is primarily aimed at research scientists and those at the graduate student level. For the first time, the theoretical and empirical literature on begging is fully reviewed. New ideas and data are also presented from a wide range of natural systems, and each chapter ends with suggestions for future study.

Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the design and analysis of techniques enabling intelligent and dynamic cooperation and communication among agents in a distributed environment. A flexible theoretical formalism is developed in detail and it is demonstrated how this approach can be used for the design of agent architectures in practice. The formal part of this work is based on a variant of the BDI logic introduced by Georgeff and Rao. This book, for the first time, outlines this formalism in some depth. The most important practical benefit provided is the concept of cooperation protocols allowing the representation of various methods of cooperation and possible patterns of dialogue.
