Book excerpt: "The Cooper Basin is a PennsylvanianMiddle Triassic intracratonic basin in northeastern South Australia and southwestern Queensland. In conjunction with the overlying Eromanga Basin, the basin is Australia's largest onshore producer of gas and oil. Exploration activity in the region has recently expanded with explorers pursuing a range of newly identified unconventional hydrocarbon plays. These include extensive tight gas accumulations in the Gidgealpa Group, deep dry coal seam gas associated with the Patchawarra and Toolachee formations, the less extensive shale gas plays in the Roseneath and Murteree shales and mixed lithotype hybrid plays (Goldstein et al., 2012; Menpes et al., 2013; Greenstreet, 2015). The Australian Petroleum Source Rocks Mapping project is a new study to improve our understanding of the petroleum resource potential of Australia's sedimentary basins."--Online abstract.

Book Synopsis Sedimentary Processes, Environments and Basins by : Gary Nichols
Download or read book Sedimentary Processes, Environments and Basins written by Gary Nichols and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades Peter Friend has been one of the leading figures in sedimentary geology and throughout that time he has helped scores of other people by supervising doctoral students, collaborating with colleagues, especially in developing countries, and selflessly sharing ideas with fellow geologists. This collection of papers is a survey of the research frontier in basin dynamics, a field Peter Friend helped initiate, and a token of thanks from people who have benefited from an association with Peter during their careers. The papers in this book fall into four themes - Tectonics and sedimentation, Landscape evolution and provenance, Depositional systems and Fluvial sedimentation - which reflect Peter's research interests and are all important areas of current research in sedimentary geology. There are both case studies and review articles on these themes which reflect recent work, but the collection can also be considered to be a 'sampler' of sedimentary geology for anyone with broad interests in the Earth sciences.
Book Synopsis Geology and Geomorphology of Alluvial and Fluvial Fans by : D. Ventra
Download or read book Geology and Geomorphology of Alluvial and Fluvial Fans written by D. Ventra and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alluvial and fluvial fans are the most widespread depositional landform bordering the margins of highland regions and actively subsiding continental basins, across a broad spectrum of tectonic and climatic settings. They are significant to the local morphodynamics of mountain regions and also to the evolution of sediment-routing systems, affecting the propagation and preservation of stratigraphic signals of environmental change over vast areas. The volume presents case studies discussing the geology and geomorphology of alluvial and fluvial fans from both active systems and ancient ones preserved in the stratigraphic record. It brings together case studies from a range of continents, climatic and tectonic settings, some introducing innovative monitoring and analysis techniques, and it provides an overview of current debates in the field. This volume will be of particular interest to geologists, geomorphologists, sedimentologists and the general reader with an interest in Earth science.

Book Synopsis Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins by : Cathy Busby
Download or read book Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins written by Cathy Busby and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 1034 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the complex interplay between tectonics and sedimentation is a key endeavor in modern earth science. Many of the world's leading researchers in this field have been brought together in this volume to provide concise overviews of the current state of the subject. The plate tectonic revolution of the 1960's provided the framework for detailed models on the structure of orogens and basins, summarized in a 1995 textbook edited by Busby and Ingersoll. Tectonics of Sedimentary Basins: Recent Advances focuses on key topics or areas where the greatest strides forward have been made, while also providing on-line access to the comprehensive 1995 book. Breakthroughs in new techniques are described in Section 1, including detrital zircon geochronology, cosmogenic nuclide dating, magnetostratigraphy, 3-D seismic, and basin modelling. Section 2 presents the new models for rift, post-rift, transtensional and strike slip basin settings. Section 3 addresses the latest ideas in convergent margin tectonics, including the sedimentary record of subduction intiation and subduction, flat-slab subduction, and arc-continent collision; it then moves inboard to forearc basins and intra-arc basins, and ends with a series of papers formed under compessional strain regimes, as well as post-orogenic intramontane basins. Section 4 examines the origin of plate interior basins, and the sedimentary record of supercontinent formation. This book is required reading for any advanced student or professional interested in sedimentology, plate tectonics, or petroleum geoscience. Book Synopsis Glacial Sedimentary Processes and Products by : Michael J. Hambrey
Download or read book Glacial Sedimentary Processes and Products written by Michael J. Hambrey and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Associating ice masses with the transport and deposition ofsediments has long formed a central theme in glaciology and glacialgeomorphology. The reason for this focus is clear, in that icemasses are responsible for much of the physical landscape whichcharacterizes the Earth's glaciated regions. This association alsoholds at a variety of scales, for example, from the grain-sizecharacteristics of small-scale moraines to the structuralarchitecture of large-scale, glacigenic sedimentary sequences inboth surface and subaqueous environments. This volume brings numerous state-of-the-art research contributionstogether, each relating to a different physical setting, spatialscale, process or investigative technique. The result is a diverseand interesting collection of papers by glaciologists, numericalmodellers and glacial geologists, which are all linked by the themeof investigating the relationships between the behaviour of icemasses and their resulting sedimentary sequences.
