Lost Animals brings back to life some of the most charismatic creatures to inhabit the planet. It captures the imagination with more than 200 incredible photographs, artworks of fossils, and scientific drawings of charming creatures like dodos, paraceratherium (the largest land mammal), spinosaurus (the biggest carnivorous dinosaur), placeoderm fishes (the sharks of their day), and more! Lost Animals is a captivating documentation of evolution and extinction. Each chapter focuses on a specific time in Earth's history, from the Cambrian explosion (the most intense surge of evolution the world has ever experienced) to present times, with profiles of the key species that lived then. From long extinct animals to Lazarus species--animals that were thought to be extinct before being rediscovered--this book takes readers on a journey through Earth's natural history, highlighting the world's biggest animal losses and its moments of conservational hope.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovatively packaged literary anthology published to commemorate the International Polar Year-and remind us what we're in danger of losing. The Arctic and Antarctic ice shelves have been an object of obsession for as long as we've known they existed. Countless explorers, such as Richard Byrd, Ernest Shackleton, and Robert Falcon Scott, have risked their lives to chart their frozen landscapes. Now, for the first time in human history, we are in legitimate danger of seeing polar ice dramatically shrink, break apart, or even disappear. The Ends of the Earth, a collection of the very best writing on the Arctic and Antarctic, will simultaneously commemorate four centuries of exploring and scientific study, and make the call for preservation. Stocked with first-person narratives, cultural histories, nature and science writing, and fiction, this book is a compendium of the greats of their fields: including legendary polar explorers and such writers as Jon Krakauer, Jack London, Diane Ackerman, Barry Lopez, and Ursula K. LeGuin. Edited by two contemporary authorities on exploring and the environment, and published to coincide with the International Polar Year, The Ends of the Earth is a memorable collection of terrific writing-and a lasting contribution to the debate over global warming and the future of the polar regions themselves.

Book excerpt: How do animals live in the harshest environments on Earth? Despite the bitter cold, ferocious winds and six months of darkness, the polar regions are home to many animals. These creatures can survive because of their unique adaptations, explored here through compelling fact-based stories and evocative illustrations. Readers learn about the arctic fox’s furry toe pads that protect her when walking on ice, emperor penguins that huddle in groups around their chicks to keep everyone warm, and narwhals that use echolocation to find a crack in the surface ice to breathe. It’s a fascinating journey through a year in the polar regions, where animals don’t just survive - they thrive!

Book excerpt: The European explorers who dared to face the perils of the unknown have in recent times become shrouded in controversy. No longer esteemed as heroes, except in their homelands, these bold explorers are now seen as purveyors of disease, destruction and slavery whose only interests were finding gold, becoming famous, and spreading their religious beliefs. But, as the author of this work points out, these explorers broke down long-standing myths and broadened the world's horizons. Beginning with Prince Henry the Navigator's worldly vision of finding a direct sea route to India and concluding with Ferdinand Magellan's quest to be the first man to sail around the world, this work tells the collective story of the numerous explorers who sought to find a path to the exotic spices and other treasures of the Far East. Most of the explorers included in this work were of the same generation and several of them even sailed together. The book also examines the political, social and economic factors that ushered in the age of exploration and had such an impact upon the explorers.

This book was released on 2022-09-10 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a professional analyst reading the Bible in its entirety in multiple English translations, including the NIV (New International Version) and the Stone edition of the Tanach (Hebrew Bible), as well as researching and referencing other translations. The focus was to find everything that the Bible says about animals and analyze it. The author, Suzanne R. Buerer, saw a pattern throughout the Bible showing that the animals are very caught up in the affairs of mankind, carried along with humans in the Fall, in punishments, in blessings, AND in restoration. The author found that animals have the breath of the spirit of life which comes from God, and one book even discusses the spirit of the animal. The author shows how the Bible emphasizes that God is very involved with His animals - He knows them, He talks about them (in more than one book), they cry out to Him, and He feeds and saves them. In the last chapter, the author also discusses scriptures concerning mankind’s salvation along with and in contrast to God’s saving and renewal of all of His creation, as there is a matter of choice for humans to turn toward or away from God, while He otherwise will eliminate death, save His creation, and renew all things. The conclusion is that God cares very much for all of His creation, including His animals. His love, salvation, and renewal extend to all who revere Him, the whole world and all that is in it!
