Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case can be made, and has been made by Pope Francis, that the extensive use of air conditioning use in the developed world, especially the United States, is a careless excess and poor example to the rest of the world. Indeed, it makes a mockery of the current ideology of energy sustainability including concerns about prevention of global warming. Extension of wasteful practices of air conditioning to emerging economies (like India) is easily shown to be unsustainable. As with other recalcitrant problems such as over-reliance on cars and poor personal health and dietary habits (smoking, processed foods) the source of the problem is found individual moral choices that are championed as individual freedoms but actually represent a degenerate morality which yields more benefit to corporations and big government than to people. The Buddhist ethic provides one path into the heart of human choices illuminating as it does the "incorrect thinking" that underlies bad choices including those that most people think are based on common sense and scientific expertise. This book applies this idea to the matter of air conditioning, using Thailand and like Southeast Asian settings as an example. It makes the claim that emerging western interest in "mindfulness" could be leveraged to introduce new thinking on personal energy use that will go much further to create true sustainability than programs based on "harnessing" geophysical technologies such as solar and wind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating collection of stories of the Thai forest monks that illuminates the Thai Forest tradition as a vibrant, compassionate, and highly appealing way of life. This work ingeniously intermingles real-life stories about nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Buddhist monks in old Siam (today’s Thailand) with experiences recorded by their Western contemporaries. Stories of giant snakes, bandits, boatmen, midwives, and guardian spirits collectively portray a Buddhist culture in all its imaginative and geographical brilliance. By juxtaposing these eyewitness accounts, Kamala Tiyavanich presents a new and vivid picture of Buddhism as it was lived and of the natural environments in which the Buddha’s teachings were practiced. This book was previously published under the title The Buddha in the Jungle.

Book excerpt: "A house in the center of Bangkok becomes the point of confluence where lives are shaped by upheaval, memory, and the lure of home. Witness to two centuries' flux in one of the world's most restless cities, a house plays host to longings and losses past, present, and future. A nineteenth-century missionary doctor pines for the comforts of New England even as he finds the vibrant foreign chaos of Siam increasingly difficult to resist. A post-war society woman marries, mothers, and holds court, little suspecting the course of her future. A jazz pianist is summoned in the 1970s to conjure music that will pacify resident spirits, even as he's haunted by ghosts of his former life. Not long after, a young woman gives swimming lessons in the luxury condos that have eclipsed the old house, trying to outpace the long shadow of her political past. And in the post-submergence Bangkok of the future, a band of savvy teenagers guides tourists and former residents past waterlogged, ruined landmarks, selling them tissues to wipe their tears for places they themselves do not remember. Time collapses as these stories collide and converge, linked by blood, memory, yearning, chance, and the forces voraciously making and remaking the amphibian, ever-morphing city itself"--Provided by publisher.
