Book excerpt: Every mediator recalls how difficult it was to break into the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and how gaining initial experience was near impossible. This eye-opening book provides insights into what success looks like in a mediation practice. The Annual World Mediation Summit brings some of the most forward-thinking international conflict experts together in this book sharing their accounts of how mediation is used to resolve interpersonal and international conflicts so that participants walk away from the conflict with win-win solutions. This book will appeal to anyone interested in practical experiences in mediation across the globe, or wanting to discover how the most successful mediators operate. It is also appropriate for anyone interested in learning from successful judges, lawyers and mediators. Furthermore, this book will be useful to anyone who wants to learn about how mediation works worldwide and to learn from mediators’ challenges and capitalize on their successes. The twenty plus chapters here are written by authors from across the globe supporting the use of mediation in place of other more complicated systems. Their experiences are thoughtfully and clearly described in this book.

Book excerpt: Whether formally incorporated into curriculum and teacher training or informally integrated in contexts such as state or NGO initiatives dealing with resolving social, ethnic, and religious conflicts, peace education is increasingly recognized as a critical component in addressing violence in contemporary plural societies. Peace education can constructively undertake a reframing of historical narratives while inspiring practical community activities. An important, but insufficiently studied and theorized aspect of peace education is the role of religion. The challenge to peace education in today’s globalized, diverse, mobile, and religiously pluralistic world is to be able to take both complex global and distinctive local situations into account. The contributions to this integrative collection of essays provide exactly these local and global perspectives on the state of peace education and its relationship to religion across pedagogy and curriculum, state policies, and activism within societies on the front lines of resolving internal conflicts, whether historical or recent, that often reflect aspects of religious identities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the 21st century dawns, the world is experiencing a firestorm of local and regional wars. But these wars are significantly different from other such wars during the past hundred years. The two major differences are the current advanced state of weaponry and the presence of big media simultaneously constructing different and contradicting realities. National identity mobilization is the driving force behind these disputes which UN seems unable to resolve. The Falklands-Malvinas War between Argentina and the United Kingdom is particularly instructive for understanding of regional and local wars. The participants were from different continents, cultures, military strengths and possessed vastly different basic assumptions. The author examines this war as a case study crucial to a clearer understanding of national self-images; mobilization of national identity, and aggressive decision-making. -- Amazon.com.

This book was released on with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of monographs is dedicated to the increasingly vital area of prevention in healthcare. The works are organized into four categories of preventive practice: education, social competency enhancement, natural caregiving, and systems change. Tragedy should not and need not occur before a school or community begins making efforts to prevent violence. This volume describes the steps taken by Responding In Peaceful and Positive Ways (RIPP), a program developed to promote `non-violence' among students in middle schools. RIPP provides young people with new ways to respond to conflict. Using the acronym RAID, the students are taught four types of non-violent options: Resolve, Avoid, Ignore, and Diffuse. By teaching that they have other choices in any conflict, the idea that `fighting' is a necessary response to an insult or a conflict is dispelled. RIPP also teaches the need for everyone to accept differences, to affirm those with whom they come in contact, and not to engage in `put downs' of others. This empirically validated program has been proven to work in a variety of settings and was designed with real-life experiences in mind. It was originally developed and implemented in collaboration with school administrators in both urban and rural settings.

Book excerpt: The authors describe what is known about Canadian youth crime, and the operation of the youth justice system in the context of the changes in the law that are taking place. The authors posit that the youth justice system has a relatively modest impact on youth crime. In order to respond intelligently to it and to evaluate the response of the state, two sets of information must be understood. First, society must try to understand what 'youth crime' looks like in Canada. Second, in order to understand 1 and evaluate 1 the changes that are being made in youth justice legislation in Canada, a clear understanding of the manner in which the youth justice system currently operates is necessary.
