Book Synopsis Postmodern Approaches to the Short Story by : Farhat Iftekharrudin
Download or read book Postmodern Approaches to the Short Story written by Farhat Iftekharrudin and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-03-30 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmodernism, as a mode of the contemporary short story, has been clearly established and recognized by short story theorists. But postmodern theory, as pervasive as it has become among academics in the last half century, has scarcely been applied to the short story genre in particular. Many contemporary scholars, nonetheless, are currently making use of certain postmodern thematic approaches to help them determine meanings of particular short stories. T Short story theory began with Edgar Allan Poe's review of Twice-Told Tales, a collection of stories by his contemporary, Nathaniel Hawthorne. But theoretical discussions of the short story languished until modernism and the new criticism provided impetus for further development. Surprisingly, though, the next large critical movement, postmodernism, failed to address the short story as a genre. But while there is little postmodern theory concerning the short story, contemporary scholars have used certain postmodern critical approaches to help determine meaning. This book demonstrates the effect of postmodern theory on the study of the short story genre. The expert contributors to this volume examine such topics as genre and form, the role of the reader, cultural and ethnic diversity, and feminist perspectives on the short story. In doing so, they apply postmodern theoretical approaches to international short stories, be they in the traditional mode, the modern mode, or the postmodern mode. The volume looks at fiction by Edith Wharton, Henry James, Katherine Mansfield, and other authors, and at Iranian short fiction, the postcolonial short story, the fantastic in short fiction, and other subjects.

Book Synopsis Secret Societies by : John Lawrence Reynolds
Download or read book Secret Societies written by John Lawrence Reynolds and published by Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They generate fear, suspicion, and—above all—fascination. Secret societies thrive among us, yet they remain shrouded in mystery. Their secrecy suggests, to many, sacrilege or crime, and their loyalties are often accused of undermining governments and tipping the scales of justice. The Freemasons, for example, hold more seats of power in the U.S. government than any other organization. No fewer than sixteen presidents have declared their Masonic affiliation, and there may have been more. Secret societies have infiltrated pop culture as well. Celebrity members of Kabbalah include Madonna, Demi Moore, and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. From the Mafia and the Yakuza to the Priory of Sion, Skull and Bones and the Templars, Reynolds offers an illuminating and entertaining exploration of the stories—confirmed and fabricated—that surround these societies, as well as provides detailed information on their origins, initiations, rituals, and secret signs. Dispelling myths and providing gripping revelations—such as a direct historical link between the Assassins of the Middle Ages and today’s Al Qaeda—Secret Societies gives us a smart, surprising look at the best known and often least understood covert organizations.
Book Synopsis Ellen G. White A Psychobiography by : Steve Daily
Download or read book Ellen G. White A Psychobiography written by Steve Daily and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This explosive work contains a great deal of highly documented material on the life and movement of Ellen G. White that Adventists in general, to say nothing of the public, will not know. The book is not a classic psychobiography, although history and psychology are the primary disciplines employed. It also contains a sprinkling of theology and personal reflection to make it a unique blend. The most striking evidence presented raises major questions about the prophet’s mental and moral health. It is a must read for anyone who truly wants to understand Seventh-Day Adventism and its prophetic founder. A devastating work. What Numbers and Rea started, your book will finish! —John Dart (1936-2019), longtime religion editor, Los Angeles Times I enjoyed the writing and the stories. The anecdotes you included enriched the content. Your writing was personal, and I think readers will feel that you are writing to them, and makes the book of increased value. There is the same question with Joseph Smith. Why do people stay in the face of such documentation? What are the forces that keep them tied to source documentation of fraud? —Dr. Robert Anderson, psychiatrist, author, Inside the Mind of Joseph Smith: Psychobiography and the Book of Mormon I found the material fascinating, a powerful polemic! —Ronald Numbers, William Coleman professor of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison, author, Prophetess of Health
