Book excerpt: Excerpt from Election and Conversion: A Frank Discussion of Dr. Pieper's Book on Conversion Election, With Suggestions for Lutheran Concord and Union on Another Basis It is our purpose to dwell at some length on the question of Lutheran unity in our last chapter, and so we will not develop that subject any further at this time. However, it is pertinent here to make a confession. We have passed through a strenuous mental wrestling match before venturing to submit this work for publication. The question over which we have struggled for weeks has been, Shall we, or shall we not? It was by no means an easy question to decide. First, it would be so much easier, so much more comfortable, to go along quietly, make no disturbance, stir no criticism and no further debate, and just let mat ters ecclesiastical and doctrinal go their own way. Why challenge Dr. Pieper's work? Would it not be just as well to let it have free course among our Lutheran people? Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, a debate surrounding the doctrine of election erupted within American Lutheranism. One party held to the "intuitu fidei" approach to election, arguing that God's election unto salvation occurs in view of the faith of his people. C.F.W. Walther and others in the Synodical Conference argued, against this, that God's election is unconditional. Francis Pieper's book Conversion and Election is the most detailed defense of the doctrine of unconditional election unto salvation from the Lutheran tradition. He demonstrates, throughout the work, that God predestines sinners by grace alone. Yet, he also demonstrates that God's grace is universal, and thus rejects double-predestinarian Calvinism.

Book excerpt: "Whether we have gathered up all the links in our argument or not, this is sure: we have made faith in Christ the central and regulative principle, just as Paul did, just as Luther did, just as the Augustana and all other Lutheran Symbols do. If anything in our Lutheran system of doctrine must bend, or step aside, it cannot be faith in Christ; for He is the express image of God's person, His perfect revelation, and faith in Him is our only hope." - From Chapter 4 Leander Sylvester Keyser (1856-1937) was educated at Wittenberg College Seminary, Springfield, Ohio, and served pastorates in Indiana, Kansas and Ohio. In 1911 he became professor of Systematic Theology at Hamma Divinity School, and was considered one of the leading theologians of the General Synod. Prof. Keyser's books include The Conflict Between Fundamentalism and Modernism, The Rational Test, A System of Christian Evidence (Apologetics), A System of General Ethics, A System of Natural Theism, and In The Redeemer's Footsteps. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1948, when pollsters unanimously forecast a Dewey victory over Truman, media-sponsored polls have proliferated, accompanied by a growing unease about their accuracy. Pre-Election Polling probes the results of over 430 recent polls and taps the professional "lore" of experienced pollsters to offer a major new assessment of polling practices in the 1980s. In a study of unusual scope and depth, Crespi examines the accuracy of polls conducted before a range of elections, from presidential to local. He incorporates the previously unpublished observations and reflections of pollsters representing national organizations (including Gallup, Roper, and the CBS/New York Times Poll) as well as pollsters from state, academic, and private organizations. Crespi finds potential sources of polling error in such areas as sampling, question wording, anticipating turnout, and accounting for last-minute changes in preference. To these methodological correlates of accuracy he adds important political considerations—is it a primary or general election; what office is being contested; how well known are the candidates; how crystallized are voter attitudes? Polls have become a vital feature of our political process; by exploring their strengths and weaknesses, Pre-Election Polling enhances our ability to predict and understand the complexities of voting behavior. "Combines intelligent empirical analysis with an informed insider's interpretation of the dynamics of the survey research process....Should be studied not only by all practitioners and students of opinion research but by anyone who makes use of polls." —Leo Bogart, Newspaper Advertising Bureau, Inc.

Book excerpt: A chilling mystery based on true events, from New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe. It’s senior year, and St. Joan’s Academy is a pressure cooker. Grades, college applications, boys’ texts: Through it all, Colleen Rowley and her friends keep it together. Until the school’s queen bee suddenly falls into uncontrollable tics in the middle of class. The mystery illness spreads to the school's popular clique, then more students and symptoms follow: seizures, hair loss, violent coughing fits. St. Joan’s buzzes with rumor; rumor erupts into full-blown panic. Everyone scrambles to find something, or someone, to blame. Pollution? Stress? Are the girls faking? Only Colleen—who’s been reading The Crucible for extra credit—comes to realize what nobody else has: Danvers was once Salem Village, where another group of girls suffered from a similarly bizarre epidemic three centuries ago . . . Inspired by true events—from seventeenth-century colonial life to the halls of a modern-day high school—Conversion casts a spell. "[Howe] has a gift for capturing the teenage mindset that nears the level of John Green."—USA Today "...this creepy, gripping novel is intimately real and layered, shedding light on the challenges teenage girls have faced throughout history."—The New York Times "A chilling guessing game . . . that will leave readers thinking about the power (and powerlessness) of young women in the past and present alike."—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Book excerpt: During the 2016 presidential election, America's election infrastructure was targeted by actors sponsored by the Russian government. Securing the Vote: Protecting American Democracy examines the challenges arising out of the 2016 federal election, assesses current technology and standards for voting, and recommends steps that the federal government, state and local governments, election administrators, and vendors of voting technology should take to improve the security of election infrastructure. In doing so, the report provides a vision of voting that is more secure, accessible, reliable, and verifiable.
