Book excerpt: Martin Luther had a way with words and an eye toward instruction as he wrote the Small Catechism. Written to awaken and affirm faith as well as provide a helpful tool for households and congregations, the Small Catechism delivers the precise and profound words that have become the heart of Lutheran teaching about the Christian faith. As you will see in the story of the Small Catechism, Luther saw firsthand how far removed the gospel was from the people's experience. So, he set about crafting a simple Q & A on the basics of God's word, aimed at bringing the Holy Spirit into the hearts of sixteenth-century readers, readers ever since, and into your heart too.

In this richly imagined book, Timothy Lull presents a series of fictional conversations with Martin Luther, the great reformer. Originating from sites in California and Germany, these provocative conversations offer reflections on Luther's world and the world in which we live.Lull offers Luther's pithy observations on such timely topics as the family and sexuality, roles of men and women, enemies and friends, renewal in the church, politics and ecumenism, interpretation of the Bible, and the resistance of congregations to the gospel message. Finally, Luther has a few surprising bits of news about current activities in heaven! This is a delightfully entertaining book packed with wisdom and insight for today's Christian.

Book excerpt: This volume provides access to selections from Martin Luther's Table Talk, Volume 54 of Luther s Works. Editor Henry F. French has carefully chosen some of the best of Luther's conversations with many guests who frequented the dinner table in the home of Martin and Katie Luther. Following the afternoon supper served at around 5 p.m. in the Luther household, guests ranging from exiled clergy, escaped nuns, government officials, visitors from abroad, and colleagues of Luther in the University stayed on in the relaxed and hospitable atmosphere to engage in spirited conversation. From 1531 till the year Luther died in 1546, colleagues and friends took notes of the table conversations in the Luther home. Topics ranged widely as Luther commented on his personal life and family; his perspectives on theology, Scripture, and the life of faith; his comments on political and social topics; and more. Almost no current issue was "off the table." Those who read this book will join the conversation with Luther and friends as they wrestle with important questions of the day. Pull up a chair and join the circle. Henry F. French has written a brief new preface to introduce this abridged volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Black Lives Matter movement gains momentum, and books like Ta-Nehisi Coates's Between the World and Me and Claudia Rankine's Citizen swing national attention toward the racism and violence that continue to poison our communities, it's as urgent now as ever to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr., whose insistence on equality and peace defined the Civil Rights Movement and forever changed the course of American history. This collection ranges from an early 1961 interview in which King describes his reasons for joining the ministry (after considering medicine), to a 1964 conversation with Robert Penn Warren, to his last interview, which was conducted on stage at the convention of the Rabbinical Assembly, just ten days before King's assassination. Timely, poignant, and inspiring, Martin Luther King, Jr.: The Last Interview is an essential addition to the Last Interview series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “beautiful and wise account” of Martin Luther King Jr. and Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh, who “gave greater life to all of us through their remarkable friendship and shared vision of nonviolence” (Joan Halifax, author of Standing at the Edge). The day after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote a heartbroken letter to their mutual friend Raphael Gould. He said: "I did not sleep last night. . . . They killed Martin Luther King. They killed us. I am afraid the root of violence is so deep in the heart and mind and manner of this society. They killed him. They killed my hope. I do not know what to say. . . . He made so great an impression in me. This morning I have the impression that I cannot bear the loss." Only a few years earlier, Thich Nhat Hanh wrote an open letter to Martin Luther King Jr. as part of his effort to raise awareness and bring peace in Vietnam. There was an unexpected outcome of Nhat Hanh's letter to King: The two men met in 1966 and 1967 and became not only allies in the peace movement, but friends. This friendship between two prophetic figures from different religions and cultures, from countries at war with one another, reached a great depth in a short period of time. Dr. King nominated Thich Nhat Hanh for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He wrote: "Thich Nhat Hanh is a holy man, for he is humble and devout. He is a scholar of immense intellectual capacity. His ideas for peace, if applied, would build a monument to ecumenism, to world brotherhood, to humanity." The two men bonded over a vision of the Beloved Community: a vision described recently by Congressman John Lewis as "a nation and world society at peace with itself." It was a concept each knew of because of their membership within the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international peace organization, and that Martin Luther King Jr. had been popularizing through his work for some time. Thich Nhat Hanh, Andrus shows, took the lineage of the Beloved Community from King and carried it on after his death.

Book excerpt: " “I, CAPTAIN HENRY BELL, do hereby declare, both to the present age, and also to posterity, that being employed beyond the seas in state affairs divers years together, both by King James, and also by the late King Charles, in Germany, I did hear and understand, in all places, great bewailing and lamentation made, by reason of the destroying and burning of above fourscore thousand of Martin Luther’s books, entitled His Last Divine Discourses.“For after such time as God stirred up the spirit of Martin Luther to detect the corruptions and abuses of Popery, and to preach Christ, and clearly to set forth the simplicity of the Gospel, many Kings, Princes, and States, Imperial Cities, and Hans-Towns fell from the Popish Religion, and became Protestants, as their posterities still are, and remain to this very day."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triumphant wins, gut-wrenching losses, last-second shots, underdogs, competition, and loyalty—it’s fun to be a fan. But when a football player takes a hit to the head after yet another study has warned of the dangers of CTE, or when a team whose mascot was born in an era of racism and bigotry takes the field, or when a relief pitcher accused of domestic violence saves the game, how is one to cheer? Welcome to the club for sports fans who care too much. In Loving Sports When They Don’t Love You Back, acclaimed sports writers Jessica Luther and Kavitha A. Davidson tackle the most pressing issues in sports, why they matter, and how we can do better. For the authors, “sticking to sports” is not an option—not when our taxes are paying for the stadiums, and college athletes aren’t getting paid at all. But simply quitting a favorite team won’t change corrupt and deplorable practices, and the root causes of many of these problems are endemic in our wider society. An essential read for modern fans, Loving Sports When They Don’t Love You Back challenges the status quo and explores how we might begin to reconcile our conscience with our fandom.
