By applying regularization methods one can approximate the true solution of the inverse problem by a regularized solution. In this thesis we show convergence rates of the regularized solution to the true solution as the noise tends to zero under so called source conditions on the true solution. Recently variational source conditions (VSCs) have become increasingly popular, due to their generality. However, they have the disadvantage that they only give optimal rates for low smoothness of the true solution. For this reason a second ...

Book excerpt: Nonlinear inverse problems appear in many applications, and typically they lead to mathematical models that are ill-posed, i.e., they are unstable under data perturbations. Those problems require a regularization, i.e., a special numerical treatment. This book presents regularization schemes which are based on iteration methods, e.g., nonlinear Landweber iteration, level set methods, multilevel methods and Newton type methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems is a collection of papers presented at a seminar of the same title held in Austria in June 1986. The papers discuss inverse problems in various disciplines; mathematical solutions of integral equations of the first kind; general considerations for ill-posed problems; and the various regularization methods for integral and operator equations of the first kind. Other papers deal with applications in tomography, inverse scattering, detection of radiation sources, optics, partial differential equations, and parameter estimation problems. One paper discusses three topics on ill-posed problems, namely, the imposition of specified types of discontinuities on solutions of ill-posed problems, the use of generalized cross validation as a data based termination rule for iterative methods, and also a parameter estimation problem in reservoir modeling. Another paper investigates a statistical method to determine the truncation level in Eigen function expansions and for Fredholm equations of the first kind where the data contains some errors. Another paper examines the use of singular function expansions in the inversion of severely ill-posed problems arising in confocal scanning microscopy, particle sizing, and velocimetry. The collection can benefit many mathematicians, students, and professor of calculus, statistics, and advanced mathematics.

Book excerpt: Written by leading experts, this book provides a clear and comprehensive survey of the “status quo” of the interrelating process and cross-fertilization of structures and methods in mathematical geodesy. Starting with a foundation of functional analysis, potential theory, constructive approximation, special function theory, and inverse problems, readers are subsequently introduced to today’s least squares approximation, spherical harmonics reflected spline and wavelet concepts, boundary value problems, Runge-Walsh framework, geodetic observables, geoidal modeling, ill-posed problems and regularizations, inverse gravimetry, and satellite gravity gradiometry. All chapters are self-contained and can be studied individually, making the book an ideal resource for both graduate students and active researchers who want to acquaint themselves with the mathematical aspects of modern geodesy.

Book excerpt: In inverse problems one wants to find some parameter of interest which is not directly observable by indirect measurement. These measurements are usually noisy while the mapping of measurement to parameter is typically illposed (that is unstable). Therefore one applies regularization techniques that balance these two factors to find a stable approximation of the sought for parameter. However, in order to bound the reconstruction error, one needs additional information on the true parameter, which is nowadays typically formulated in terms of variational source conditions. In this thesis, we develop a general strategy to verify these conditions based on smoothness of the true parameter and the illposedness of the problem; the latter will be characterized by exploiting structural similarities to stability estimates. Following this, we apply our strategy to verify variational source conditions for parameter identification problems, inverse scattering and electrical impedance tomography.

Book excerpt: This open access book, edited and authored by a team of world-leading researchers, provides a broad overview of advanced photonic methods for nanoscale visualization, as well as describing a range of fascinating in-depth studies. Introductory chapters cover the most relevant physics and basic methods that young researchers need to master in order to work effectively in the field of nanoscale photonic imaging, from physical first principles, to instrumentation, to mathematical foundations of imaging and data analysis. Subsequent chapters demonstrate how these cutting edge methods are applied to a variety of systems, including complex fluids and biomolecular systems, for visualizing their structure and dynamics, in space and on timescales extending over many orders of magnitude down to the femtosecond range. Progress in nanoscale photonic imaging in Göttingen has been the sum total of more than a decade of work by a wide range of scientists and mathematicians across disciplines, working together in a vibrant collaboration of a kind rarely matched. This volume presents the highlights of their research achievements and serves as a record of the unique and remarkable constellation of contributors, as well as looking ahead at the future prospects in this field. It will serve not only as a useful reference for experienced researchers but also as a valuable point of entry for newcomers.
