Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In John 9, Jesus heals a man blind from birth. This is shocking. Even more: This miraculous healing is a microcosm of the whole Christian gospel. In merely seven verses of text, the contemplative Bible reader can see the fruit of the Holy Spirit’s work, putting the infinite Word of God into a mere handful of human words. In Christ the Lightgiver, Clifton Stringer explores the story of the gospel from creation to the fall, then from the incarnation to the mystery of Jesus' (and our) Passover to eternal life. Converge can be used by small groups, classes, or individuals. Primary Scripture passages are included for ease of study, as are questions designed to encourage both personal reflection and group conversation. Download or read book Converge Bible Studies: Three Gifts, One Christ written by Katie Z. Dawson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture tells the story of magi who followed a star in the sky—a light in the midst of the darkness—to find the Messiah. In the gifts that they placed at the feet of the Christ—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—they recognized the intermingling of light and darkness, truth and falsehood, life and death. But more than what the magi gave the child, Three Gifts, One Christ is about what Jesus offers us. Using passages from Matthew and Hebrews, Katie Z. Dawson explores three of Christ’s roles—Jesus comes as the high priest who sacrifices himself for us, the prophet who calls us into the Kingdom and shows us a better way to live, and the Messiah who triumphs over evil and sets us free. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Holy Spirit showed up with power in Acts 2, it’s unlikely many of the believers present in Jerusalem that day had any idea the magnitude of what was in store. The Spirit began building the church then and is still active in the world today. In these four sessions based on Acts, Carter explores the work of the Holy Spirit in three areas: shaping, guiding, and disrupting. He maintains that the Holy Spirit creates Christian community, shapes and reshapes community, and works through groups of believers to speak to the culture. In Holy Spirit and Community, you’ll learn how to recognize the Spirit at work in your community. Converge Bible Studies is a series of topical Bible studies based on the Common English Bible. Book excerpt: We know how the story begins. Now take a fresh look at God's first recorded words. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light (Genesis 1:3). In John 8:12, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." This light goes on forever, just as the love of God never ends. Follow the Light links the first words God spoke in the Bible to the experiences of God's people and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Delve into an exploration of the Scriptures, considering all the ways that light is a metaphor for God, His Kingdom, and His infinite love. Created for individuals and small groups, Follow the Light examines God's presence in various forms of light, and uses numerous scriptural references to show us that the presence of our Heavenly Father is all around us. This eight-week study is divided into personal, daily assignments along with suggested prayer topics to encourage regular conversations with our Heavenly Father. The final chapter is designed as a self-reflection tool and offers suggestions to develop a rich and fulfilling prayer life. As you complete this Bible study, and contemplate on the glory of God's Word and the vastness of His creation, you will begin to feel our Heavenly Father's constant presence and visibility in your life. ... and there was beautiful, life-giving, and loving light.
Book Synopsis The Evangelical Universalist by : Gregory MacDonald
Download or read book The Evangelical Universalist written by Gregory MacDonald and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can an orthodox Christian, committed to the historic faith of the Church and the authority of the Bible, be a universalist? Is it possible to believe that salvation is found only by grace, through faith in Christ, and yet to maintain that in the end all people will be saved? Can one believe passionately in mission if one does not think that anyone will be lost forever? Could universalism be consistent with the teachings of the Bible? In The Evangelical Universalist the author argues that the answer is ‘yes!’ to all of these questions. Weaving together philosophical, theological, and biblical considerations, he seeks to show that being a committed universalist is consistent with the central teachings of the biblical texts and of historic Christian theology.
Book Synopsis Creating a Missional Culture by : JR Woodward
Download or read book Creating a Missional Culture written by JR Woodward and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time, Moses had had enough. Exhausted by the challenge of leading the Israelites from slavery to the Promised Land, Moses cried out to God, "What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? . . . If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me" (Exodus 11:11, 15). If that sounds hauntingly familiar to you, you may be the senior pastor of a contemporary church. The burden of Christian leadership is becoming increasingly unbearable--demanding skills not native to the art of pastoring; demanding time that makes sabbath rest and even normal sleep patterns seem extravagant; demanding inhuman levels of efficiency, proficiency and even saintliness. No wonder pastors seem and even feel less human these days. No wonder they burn out or break down at an alarming rate; no wonder the church is missing the mark on its mission. In Creating a Missional Culture, JR Woodward offers a bold and surprisingly refreshing model for churches--not small adjustments around the periphery of a church's infrastructure but a radical revisioning of how a church ought to look, from its leadership structure to its mobilization of the laity. The end result looks surprisingly like the church that Jesus created and the apostles cultivated: a church not chasing the wind but rather going into the world and making disciples of Jesus.

Book Synopsis The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark by : Dennis Ronald MacDonald
Download or read book The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark written by Dennis Ronald MacDonald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and that he wanted his readers to recognise the Homeric antecedents in Mark's story of Jesus. Mark was composing a prose anti-epic, MacDonald says, presenting Jesus as a suffering hero modeled after but far superior to traditional Greek heroes. Much like Odysseus, Mark's Jesus sails the seas with uncomprehending companions, encounters preternatural opponents, and suffers many things before confronting rivals who have made his house a den of thieves. In his death and burial, Jesus emulates Hector, although unlike Hector Jesus leaves his tomb empty. Mark's minor characters, too, recall Homeric predecessors: Bartimaeus emulates Tiresias; Joseph of Arimathea, Priam; and the women at the tomb, Helen, Hecuba, and Andromache. And, entire episodes in Mark mirror Homeric episodes, including stilling the sea, walking on water, feeding the multitudes, the Triumphal E

Book Synopsis Cultures of Memory in South Asia by : D. Venkat Rao
Download or read book Cultures of Memory in South Asia written by D. Venkat Rao and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture of Memory in South Asia reconfigures European representations of India as a paradigmatic extension of a classical reading, which posits the relation between text and context in a determined way. It explores the South Asian cultural response to European “textual” inheritances. The main argument of this work is that the reflective and generative nodes of Indian cultural formations are located in the configurations of memory, the body and idiom (verbal and visual), where the body or the body complex becomes the performative effect and medium of articulated memories. This work advances its arguments by engaging with mnemocultures-cultures of memory that survive and proliferate in speech and gesture. Drawing on Sanskrit and Telugu reflective sources, this work emphasizes the need to engage with cultural memory and the compositional modes of Indian reflective traditions. This important and original work focuses on the ruptured and stigmatised resources of heterogeneous Indian traditions and calls for critical humanities that move beyond the colonially configured received traditions. Cultures of Memory suggests the possibilities of transcultural critical humanities research and teaching initiatives from the Indian context in today’s academy.

Matthiessen, a student of Zen Buddhism, was also on a spiritual quest to find the Lama of Shey at the ancient shrine on Crystal Mountain. The result is a remarkable account of a journey both physical and spiritual, as the arduous climb yields to Matthiessen a deepening Buddhist understanding of reality, suffering, impermanence, and beauty.
