Book Synopsis Legal Aspects of International Drug Control by : S.K. Chatterjee
Download or read book Legal Aspects of International Drug Control written by S.K. Chatterjee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for suppressing the illicit traffic in drugs can hardly be over-emphasized. Yet, the licit uses of drugs, especially for medical and scientific needs, cannot be suppressed. Apparently, it is a ques tion of determining the vvorld requirements of drugs for such legiti mate uses, and of producing and manufacturing them accordingly. Owing to their multifarious medical uses in various parts of the world, it proves to be almost impossible to determine exactly the amount of drugs required for legitimate purposes. There is also the complicating factor that drugs are used for sociological and religious reasons, which have a long history. Not only arc the licit uses and legitimate amounts of drugs difficult to determine but also such difficulties give rise to illicit traffic in them. Yet, it is believed that a concerted international policy, coupled with national co-operation, on various facets of the related problems-namely, limitation of production and/or manufacture of drugs, restriction on cultivation of plants that may contribute to addiction-producing substances, training and rehabilitation of drug addicts, and efficient national administration-would help eradicate drug-abuse. In search of an appropriate remedy, this book has been devoted to a practical study of the problem and to exploring, in this area of international law, the relationship between the political and econ omic interests and the international economic order.

Book Synopsis "Please, Do Not Make Us Suffer Any More-" by : Human Rights Watch (Organization)
Download or read book "Please, Do Not Make Us Suffer Any More-" written by Human Rights Watch (Organization) and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 2009 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With support from the Open Society Institute International Palliative Care Initiative, Human Rights Watch released a groundbreaking report on the lack of access to pain relief medicines for millions of patients worldwide. The report, "Please Don't Make Us Suffer Anymore": Access to Pain Treatment as a Human Right, finds that countries can significantly improve access to pain medications by addressing the causes of their poor availability, which include the following: *Failure to put in place functioning supply and distribution systems *Absence of government policies to ensure medicine availability *Insufficient instruction for health care workers *Excessively strict drug-control regulations *Fear of legal sanctions among healthcare workers. "Please Don't Make Us Suffer Anymore" notes that international law requires states to make narcotic drugs available for the treatment of pain while preventing abuse, but that the strong international focus on preventing abuse of such drugs has led many countries to neglect that obligation. The full report is available in PDF format. French, Russian, and Spanish versions are available on the HRW website.

Book Synopsis The Controlled Substances Act by : Brian T. Yeh
Download or read book The Controlled Substances Act written by Brian T. Yeh and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report highlights certain non-criminal regulatory requirements of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The CSA and its implementing regulations establish a framework through which the federal government regulates the use of controlled substances for legitimate medical, scientific, research, and industrial purposes, and prevents these substances from being diverted for illegal purposes. The CSA assigns various plants, drugs, and chemicals (such as narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and anabolic steroids) to one of five schedules based on the substance's medical use, potential for abuse, and safety or dependence liability. Schedule I contains substances that have no currently accepted medical use and cannot safely be made available to the public under a prescription, while Schedules II, III, IV, and V include substances that have recognized medical uses and may be manufactured, distributed, and used in accordance with the CSA. The order of the schedules reflects substances that are progressively less dangerous and addictive. To restrict access to chemicals used in the illicit manufacture of certain controlled substances, the CSA also regulates 40 “listed chemicals.†Furthermore, the CSA regulates controlled substance “analogues,†which are substances that are not controlled but are structurally or pharmacologically similar to substances found in Schedule I or II and have no accepted medical use. This is a print on demand report.
