Book excerpt: The objectives of the research program are to assess how well current numerical methods and turbulence can combine to predict the detailed flow and heat transfer behaviour in flow around a 180 degree bend, a geometry of great importance in heat exchanger design and in various other cooling-passage geometries. To allow this assessment detailed flow and thermal experimental data are required - and these were not available. The total research program therefore has two roughly equal parts: obtaining the experimental data and developing and applying the three-dimensional numerical calculation scheme.

The main research effort during the year was directed at bends of circular cross section. Two sections deal with experimental and computational aspects of this work. These are preceded by a brief account of further computational work in the squared-sectional duct.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is presented of the first year of research performed in an investigation aimed at developing a calculation scheme for predicting general three-dimensional flows in curved passages of circular and square cross-section. The experimental component deals with the implementation and validation of a laser-Doppler velocimeter and associated instrumentation. The numerical component deals with the development of a technique for reducing numerical diffusion in the calculation scheme. An update is provided of the current status of the research. A tentative schedule of work for years two and three is also given. (Author).

Book excerpt: The research in this British dissertation was motivated by the desire to provide a comprehensive set of convective heat transfer data against which flow simulation schemes could be tested. Turbulent convecting three-dimensional flow of fluids in curved passages is frequently encountered in thermofluids equipment and systems. Although such flow situations have been too complex to adequately simulate computationally in the past, recent developments have provided physical models coupled with numerical techniques which can be applied to provide such simulations. Nevertheless, it has not been established to what extent such simulations provide accurate predictions and a sufficiently detailed data base does not exist to allow a searching evaluation of computer predictions. It is the conclusion of this collaborative study that significant inadequacies remain in the turbulence and wall models with respect to their ability to predict fully-three dimensional curved turbulent flow. Predictions for the Nusselt number distribution are in rather better agreement with the experimental data than are the hydrodynamic and temperature field predictions.

Book excerpt: obtained are still severely limited to low Reynolds numbers (about only one decade better than direct numerical simulations), and the interpretation of such calculations for complex, curved geometries is still unclear. It is evident that a lot of work (and a very significant increase in available computing power) is required before such methods can be adopted in daily's engineering practice. I hope to l"Cport on all these topics in a near future. The book is divided into six chapters, each· chapter in subchapters, sections and subsections. The first part is introduced by Chapter 1 which summarizes the equations of fluid mechanies, it is developed in C~apters 2 to 4 devoted to the construction of turbulence models. What has been called "engineering methods" is considered in Chapter 2 where the Reynolds averaged equations al"C established and the closure problem studied (§1-3). A first detailed study of homogeneous turbulent flows follows (§4). It includes a review of available experimental data and their modeling. The eddy viscosity concept is analyzed in §5 with the l"Csulting ~alar-transport equation models such as the famous K-e model. Reynolds stl"Css models (Chapter 4) require a preliminary consideration of two-point turbulence concepts which are developed in Chapter 3 devoted to homogeneous turbulence. We review the two-point moments of velocity fields and their spectral transforms (§ 1), their general dynamics (§2) with the particular case of homogeneous, isotropie turbulence (§3) whel"C the so-called Kolmogorov's assumptions are discussed at length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prediction of turbulent flows is of paramount importance in the development of complex engineering systems involving flow, heat and mass transfer, and chemical reactions. Arising from a programme held at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge, this volume reviews the current situation regarding the prediction of such flows through the use of modern computational fluid dynamics techniques, and attempts to address the inherent problem of modelling turbulence. In particular, the current physical understanding of such flows is summarised and the resulting implications for simulation discussed. The volume continues by surveying current approximation methods whilst discussing their applicability to industrial problems. This major work concludes by providing a specific set of guidelines for selecting the most appropriate model for a given problem. Unique in its breadth and critical approach, this book will be of immense value to experienced practitioners and researchers, continuing the UK's strong tradition in fluid dynamics.
