Book excerpt: This Volume is the Proceedings of the IUTAM Symposium on Unsteady Separated Flows and Their Control held in Corfu, Greece, 18–22 June 2007. This was the second IUTAM Symposium on this subject, following the symposium in Toulouse, in April 2002. The Symposium consisted of single plenary sessions with invited lectures, - lected oral presentations, discussions on special topics and posters. The complete set of papers was provided to all participants at the meeting. The thematic sessions of this Symposium are presented in the following: Experimental techniques for the unsteady ow separation Theoretical aspects and analytical approaches of ow separation Instability and transition Compressibility effects related to unsteady separation Statistical and hybrid turbulence modelling for unsteady separated ows Direct and Large-Eddy Simulation of unsteady separated ows Theoretical/industrial aspects of unsteady separated ow control This IUTAM Symposium concerned an important domain of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics nowadays. It focused on the problem of ow separation and of its control. It achieved a uni ed approach regrouping the knowledge provided from theoretical, experimental, numerical simulation and modelling aspects for unsteady separated ows (incompressible and compressible regimes) and included ef cient control devices to achieve attenuation or suppression of separation. The subject - eas covered important themes in the domain of fundamental research as well as in the domain of applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project we have sought to understand and locate coherent material structures that govern turbulent fluid mixing. As we have showed, these structures coincide with invariant manifolds of the fluid particle dynamics. We have developed several numerically assisted analytic criteria to extract invariant manifolds from simulated and measured flow data. Our criteria have been applied by others in analyzing controlled shear flows I, vortex merger problems 2, geophysical data 3, and geological phenomena 4. As an example, Fig. 1 shows coherent structures rendered by our criteria in a two-dimensional turbulence simulation. Unexpectedly, we have also managed to extend Prandtl's classic steady flow separation criterion to unsteady flows. Remarkably, we also obtained explicit asymptotic formulae for unsteady separation profiles near a general no-slip boundary. As an example, Figure 2. compares a separation prediction from the widely used "zero-skin friction principle" (Fig. 2a), and from our unsteady separation criterion (Fig. 2b). Figure 3. (a) Instantaneous streamlines, separation points predicted the classical theory (zero skin friction), and actual unsteady flow separation. Separation is visualized by plotting the current position of an initially horizontal layer of fluid particles in the oscillating separation bubble model of S. Ghosh (UTRC). (b)Same as (a), with our analytically predicted unsteady separation profile superimposed. In a new approach to flow control, we have explored the use invariant manifolds to shape global coherent structures via local feedback control. We have applied these ideas in the control of advective mixing behind the flameholder of a combustor and the control of unsteady separation in bluff body shear flows (see Fig. 3).
Book Synopsis Geometric Control Theory by : Velimir Jurdjevic
Download or read book Geometric Control Theory written by Velimir Jurdjevic and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric control theory is concerned with the evolution of systems subject to physical laws but having some degree of freedom through which motion is to be controlled. This book describes the mathematical theory inspired by the irreversible nature of time evolving events. The first part of the book deals with the issue of being able to steer the system from any point of departure to any desired destination. The second part deals with optimal control, the question of finding the best possible course. An overlap with mathematical physics is demonstrated by the Maximum principle, a fundamental principle of optimality arising from geometric control, which is applied to time-evolving systems governed by physics as well as to man-made systems governed by controls. Applications are drawn from geometry, mechanics, and control of dynamical systems. The geometric language in which the results are expressed allows clear visual interpretations and makes the book accessible to physicists and engineers as well as to mathematicians.

Book Synopsis Feedback Control of Separation in Unsteady Flows by : Mohammad-Reza Alam
Download or read book Feedback Control of Separation in Unsteady Flows written by Mohammad-Reza Alam and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prandtl (1904) showed that in a steady flow past a bluff body, streamlines separate from the boundary where the skin friction (or wall shear) vanishes and admits a negative gradient. Despite initial suggestions, however, it was recognized that Prandtl's zero-skin-friction criterion for separation is invalid for unsteady flows. Employing a Lagrangian approach, Haller (2004) derived an exact kinematic theory for unsteady separation in two-dimensional flows. This theory predicts separation at points where a weighted average of the skin-friction vanishes. The weight function in this criterion depends on quantities measured along the wall, and hence can be used in an active feedback control of separation. Feedback control has been shown to lead to performance improvement in a range of aerodynamic applications, but no rigorous feedback law has been constructed for lack of a detailed understanding of separation. In this work, we use a wall-reduced form of the vorticity-transport equation to design a feedback controller that enforces Haller's criteria-and hence induces separation- at prescribed boundary points. We also present a stability analysis of the controller, and explore alternative control strategies for separation. We use FLUENT to validate our controller numerically on a range of flows, including steady and unsteady channel flows and backward-facing step flows.

Book Synopsis Transition to Turbulence by : Tapan K. Sengupta
Download or read book Transition to Turbulence written by Tapan K. Sengupta and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Present understanding of transition to turbulence has now been studied over one hundred and fifty years. The path the studies have taken posed it as a modal eigenvalue problem. Some researchers have suggested alternative models without being specific. First-principle based approach of receptivity is the route to build bridges among ideas for solving the Navier-Stokes equation for specific canonical problems. This book highlights the mathematical physics, scientific computing, and new ideas and theories for nonlinear analyses of fluid flows, for which vorticity dynamics remain central. This book is a blend of classic with distinctly new ideas, which establish different dynamics of flows, from genesis to evolution of disturbance fields with rigorously developed methods to tracing coherent structures amidst the seemingly random and chaotic fluid dynamics of transitional and turbulent flows"--
Book Synopsis Dissipative Systems Analysis and Control by : Rogelio Lozano
Download or read book Dissipative Systems Analysis and Control written by Rogelio Lozano and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the analysis and feedback control of dissipative dynamical systems. It presents the background of dissipative systems theory. Linear as well as nonlinear systems are treated, and many examples are given throughout the chapters. Some infinite dimensional and non-smooth examples are also included. The emphasis is put on the application towards the design of stable feedback control laws. Then the theory is illustrated on physical examples; (Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems are thoroughly studied, as well as adaptive control). It is shown how the dissipativity properties of a system can be used in the design of stable feedback controllers. Some experimental results are presented which corroborate the theoretical developments. This monograph is primarily for readers who wish to get aquainted with Dissipative Systems Theory, and its uses in Systems and Control and Robotics. It constitutes an advanced introduction to the topic, and is the first volume ever published which is dedicated entirely to this subject.
