Book excerpt: The development and characterisation of open loop control methods for spatiotemporal optical structures were the main objectives treated in this thesis. For this purpose, the LCLV single feedback system, which was chosen as model system, is particularly well suited due to large variety of patterns found in the system and because the system exhibits extremely large aspect ratios. Since the principal behaviour of the LCLV system had been explored before and the self-organised patterns spontaneously forming in the systems were known my main interest was to study the control the spontaneous behaviour of dissipative optical solitons and to explore spatio– temporal synchronisation in the LCLV system. Prior to the treatment of the main objective: Control of the LCLV single feedback system, I have in a small excursion reported on the modulation instability of incoherent optical beams propagating in photorefractive media. In this context, it was shown that both a first threshold of modulation instability, where the uniform beam breaks up into stripes, and the secondary threshold, where the beam completely breaks up into two dimensional filaments, can be controlled by changing the degree of the beam’s spatial coherence. In studying the control of modulation instability with incoherent beam a key prerequisite for controlling the interaction behavior of propagating optical solitons has been characterised. Using mutually incoherent or phase engineered optical solitons the interaction behaviour of solitons can be modified enabling the creation of more densely packed soliton arrays.

Book excerpt: Guiding graduate students and researchers through the complex world of laser physics and nonlinear optics, this book provides an in-depth exploration of the dynamics of lasers and other relevant optical systems, under the umbrella of a unitary spatio-temporal vision. Adopting a balanced approach, the book covers traditional as well as special topics in laser physics, quantum electronics and nonlinear optics, treating them from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamical systems. These include laser emission, frequency generation, solitons, optically bistable systems, pulsations and chaos and optical pattern formation. It also provides a coherent and up-to-date treatment of the hierarchy of nonlinear optical models and of the rich variety of phenomena they describe, helping readers to understand the limits of validity of each model and the connections among the phenomena. It is ideal for graduate students and researchers in nonlinear optics, quantum electronics, laser physics and photonics.

Book excerpt: As in all nonlinear optics, control over the spatial phase of the fundamental light fields allows extensive influence on the well-established effect of High-Har monic Generation (HHG). This results in the realisation of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light with unique properties. Christian Kern shows and discusses in his thesis two schemes where phase shaping of ultrashort laser pulses is appli ed on scales below their fundamental wavelength. He shows the limitations of how nanoplasmonic objects can be administered for strong field physics. Furthermore, a novel approach of producing XUV light carrying orbital angular momentum via HHG is demonstrated and experimentally verified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work on this program is aimed at developing and understanding nano-optical structures with emphasis on developing quantum optical-based devices. Specific work focused on semiconductor quantum dots. The major achievements include the first demonstration of an all optically driven quantum NOT-gate based on using the exciton-Bloch vector as the qubit (Science 2003). We also demonstrated optical density matrix tomography on this system. Since the fast recombination time of quantum dot excitons may limit these systems for quantum information applications, we initiated experiments on negatively charged quantum dots (similar to ions) where for quantum information processing, the qubit would be the electron spin. The energy level structure in this system is a 3-level A-system, which is also of importance to novel coherent optical applications such as slow light and electromagnetic induced transparency. Our experiments in this system are just beginning, but we have successfully demonstrated optically induced coherence in this system, the unexpected effect of spontaneously generated spin coherence, and coherent optical control. A summary of our work leading up to this was published by invitation in Physics Today while the achievement of the quantum NOT-gate was reviewed in Photonics News.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear optical studies of periodic dielectric structures have blossomed in the past two decades. New fabrication techniques are producing fiber grating and multidimensional photonic crystals in materials where the refractive index can be varied by light pulses and beams. Gap solitons that can propagate at any velocity from zero to the speed of light and spatial solitons that prevent the diffractive spread of light in waveguide arrays are two examples of the new phenomena described in this book. Many new materials and structures are being developed that will impact new optical devices with applications in optical communications and optical data processing. All the above topics are addressed in detail in this book.

Specific work focused on semiconductor quantum dots. During this research period, a number of important discoveries were made as well as critical demonstrations of importance to future technology. The discoveries include the prediction and observation of spontaneous emission induced coherence and the unexpected control of nuclear field fluctuations through coherent electron spin trapping that reduced the nuclear fluctuations and increases the electron spin coherence time. Demonstrations include fast spin state initialization, coherent spin trapping, quantum dot tomography, and the Mollow absorption spectrum for neutral and negatively charged exciton. Future work will capitalize on this progress to demonstrate deterministic entanglement between the electron spin and a photon for quantum information transfer and entanglements between two electron in adjacent dots for quantum based logic devices, sensors and communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of ultrafast nonlinear optics is broad and multidisciplinary, and encompasses areas concerned with both the generation and measurement of ultrashort pulses of light, as well as those concerned with the applications of such pulses. Ultrashort pulses are extreme events – both in terms of their durations, and also the high peak powers which their short durations can facilitate. These extreme properties make them powerful experiment tools. On one hand, their ultrashort durations facilitate the probing and manipulation of matter on incredibly short timescales. On the other, their ultrashort durations can facilitate high peak powers which can drive highly nonlinear light-matter interaction processes. Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics covers a complete range of topics, both applied and fundamental in nature, within the area of ultrafast nonlinear optics. Chapters 1 to 4 are concerned with the generation and measurement of ultrashort pulses. Chapters 5 to 7 are concerned with fundamental applications of ultrashort pulses in metrology and quantum control. Chapters 8 and 9 are concerned with ultrafast nonlinear optics in optical fibres. Chapters 10 to 13 are concerned with the applications of ultrashort pulses in areas such as particle acceleration, microscopy, and micromachining. The chapters are aimed at graduate-student level and are intended to provide the student with an accessible, self-contained and comprehensive gateway into each subject.

Book excerpt: Work on this program is aimed at developing and understanding nano-optical structures with the specific goal of developing and applying quantum optical methods to characterize and manipulate the quantum states of these systems. The measurements have resulted in a number of publications which demonstrate key features of new quantum mechanical structures. These features include optically induced and detected quantum entanglement of two exciton states as well as a demonstration of a classical Bell state, a Rabi oscillations corresponding to full coherent control of the state of a single quantum dot. The measurements were then extended to show optically induced and quantum entanglement in self assembled quantum dots through the detection of Raman quantum beats. Finally, we developed and demonstrated the first low temperature near field optical microscopy using coherent nonlinear optical spectroscopy techniques to directly probe the transition dipole and map out the center of mass motion of an excitonic wave function.
