Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A process for the precise control of polymer molecular weight distribution (MWD) shape is developed. Temporal control of polymer chain initiation was achieved through the metered addition of discrete initiating species to controlled radical polymerizations and anionic polymerizations. Series of polymers can be prepared with the same molar mass and breadth but with vastly different MWD shapes. Using anionic polymerization, living polymers with skewed distribution functions can be chain extended to afford well-defined block copolymers with systematically deviating compositions of molecular weights. Rheological measurements reveal that the MWD shape has an important influence on the viscoelastic behavior of homopolymer melts such as viscosity and storage modulus. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the Young's modulus of block copolymers can be tuned over a broad range by modifying the shape of the MWD in one block. Investigation of the phase behavior of block copolymers by transmission small-angle X-ray scattering and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering demonstrates that the distribution symmetry enables tuning of the thin film domain spacing and the boundaries of the bulk morphological phase diagram. Additionally, the development of a kinetic model for the predictive design of MWDs is explored.

Book Synopsis Template Polymerization by : Stefan Polowinski
Download or read book Template Polymerization written by Stefan Polowinski and published by ChemTec Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Template polymerization is a new field in polymer synthesis but common practice in the biosynthesis since DNA is the most popular template or matrix on which proteins are built by living species. This field is relevant to the synthesis of polymers of controlled structure but its application goes beyond the synthesis. Materials are formulated in complex mixtures always containing components which can be regarded as templates on which other materials are formed, modified, or are interacted with. In the new product development the relevance of these phenomena is controlled by the order of addition which affects probabilities and preferences of interaction. The current publication outlines mechanisms of template polymerization, polycondensation, and copolymerization. These mechanisms, illustrated with numerous examples, indicate a range of possibilities which can be encountered in materials and utilized to modify their properties. Orientation of substrates on template and their effect on modification of their reactivity and properties such as, for example, absorption of light or water are also discussed. Several chapters contain information on these studies discussed with sufficient detail to give reader comprehensive understanding of the methods used in various research laboratories and their findings."--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Modelling and Control of the Polymerisation of Styrene by : Tariq M. Raja
Download or read book Modelling and Control of the Polymerisation of Styrene written by Tariq M. Raja and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis describes a study of polymerisation with the intention of demonstrating the generic feasibility of some control techniques for the production of polymers with prescribed molecular weight distributions. The polymerisation of styrene using thermal and catalytic initiation was used as an exemplar for the purposes of developing the strategies. A number of mathematical models have been developed, including the kinetics of the free-radical bulk polymerisation of styrene initiated thermally and by 2,2'azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) catalyst without consideration of the environment in which the reactions occur. The dynamics of the polymerisation process are described in terms of the first three moments of the distribution of dead polymer. These moments were used to characterise the molecular weight distribution of the polymer for the purposes of control. Further, the constraints of carrying out the polymerisation in batch and semi-batch reactors, continuous stirred tank reactors and a tubular reactor have been modelled. Dynamic optimisation using Pontryagin's minimum principle and the kinetic model was used to solve the minimum batch time problem by considering separately and simultaneously the two optimal policies, for initiator and temperature. These policies yield the minimum batch time to produce a polymer product which satisfies a set of target specifications for the molecular weight distribution. Using the kinetic and reactor models together, and the optimal temperature policy as a reference level, a model based predictive controller was employed to assess whether a realistic implementation of the policy could be achieved. A difficulty in the practical, real time control of polymerisation is the lack of on-line measurement of molecular weight. A preliminary study of a model based, non-linear observer was conducted to estimate molecular weight distribution on-line. It was shown that the estimate is robust in the face of disturbances and uncertainty in the initial conditions.
