Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides readers with extensive information on path planning optimization for both single and multiple Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs), and discusses practical issues involved in advanced industrial applications of AGVs. After discussing previously published research in the field and highlighting the current gaps, it introduces new models developed by the authors with the goal of reducing costs and increasing productivity and effectiveness in the manufacturing industry. The new models address the increasing complexity of manufacturing networks, due for example to the adoption of flexible manufacturing systems that involve automated material handling systems, robots, numerically controlled machine tools, and automated inspection stations, while also considering the uncertainty and stochastic nature of automated equipment such as AGVs. The book discusses and provides solutions to important issues concerning the use of AGVs in the manufacturing industry, including material flow optimization with AGVs, programming manufacturing systems equipped with AGVs, reliability models, the reliability of AGVs, routing under uncertainty, and risks involved in AGV-based transportation. The clear style and straightforward descriptions of problems and their solutions make the book an excellent resource for graduate students. Moreover, thanks to its practice-oriented approach, the novelty of the findings and the contemporary topic it reports on, the book offers new stimulus for researchers and practitioners in the broad field of production engineering.

Book Synopsis Scheduling of Flexible Manufacturing Systems with Automated Guided Vehicles Using Petri Net Models by : Hua-Sheng Chiu
Download or read book Scheduling of Flexible Manufacturing Systems with Automated Guided Vehicles Using Petri Net Models written by Hua-Sheng Chiu and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, Petri net models for Flexible Manufacturing Systems (EMS) are constructed. A firing sequence of the Petri net from the initial marking to the final marking can be seen as a schedule of the modeled FMS. By using the branch-and-bound algorithm, an optimal schedule of the FMS can be obtained. Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS) are increasingly used for material handling in factories and warehouses. An AGVS can reduce labor costs and is ready to be integrated into an automated factory. This thesis presents two AGVS models (shared and duty) which integrate the control of AGVS with the control of part processing facilities. Both types of AGVS are modeled by Petri nets. We want to compare the two AGVS in terms of systems performance and discuss which application is more suitable for each AGVS type. We also want to consider and solve AGV jam problems. The objective of the AGV jam-free control module is to guarantee a jam-free condition among AGVs in an EMS. Results have been obtained and analyzed.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Heuristic Control Strategies for AGV's (Automated Guided Vehicles) Under Varying Demand Arrival Patterns by : Russell E. King
Download or read book Evaluation of Heuristic Control Strategies for AGV's (Automated Guided Vehicles) Under Varying Demand Arrival Patterns written by Russell E. King and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing emphasis on automation, Automated Guided Vehicles are becoming an important material handing tool in flexible manufacturing systems. The flexibility of AGV's present an interesting problem in the routing and scheduling of vehicles within the system. In this paper, we evaluate a control strategy, which is based on an analysis of the optimal control rules from a Markov Decision Process model. This strategy is compared to Vehicle Looks for Work (VLFW), which is a common control strategy used manufacturing systems today. Systems with asymmetric and symmetric demand arrivals are tested and compared for single and two vehicle systems using Monte Carlo simulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This professional book provides a comprehensive overview of the modern organisational tool of intralogistics. Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGV Systems) are floor-based systems that are used internally inside and/or outside of buildings. Since the mid-1990s, AGV Systems have successfully penetrated almost all sectors of industry and many public areas, such as hospitals. The technological standards of all AGV-relevant components and functions are explained and numerous practical examples, e.g. from the automotive, electrical and food industries, are presented. Another focus is the practical planning of such intralogistics systems based on the VDI guidelines, including hints and tips for successful project management when introducing an AGV System. This edition has been completely revised, restructured and reflects the rapid developments in technology and markets.

Book Synopsis Modeling, Simulation, And Control Of Flexible Manufacturing Systems: A Petri Net Approach by : Kurapati Venkatesh
Download or read book Modeling, Simulation, And Control Of Flexible Manufacturing Systems: A Petri Net Approach written by Kurapati Venkatesh and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-01-29 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One critical barrier leading to successful implementation of flexible manufacturing and related automated systems is the ever-increasing complexity of their modeling, analysis, simulation, and control. Research and development over the last three decades has provided new theory and graphical tools based on Petri nets and related concepts for the design of such systems. The purpose of this book is to introduce a set of Petri-net-based tools and methods to address a variety of problems associated with the design and implementation of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), with several implementation examples. There are three ways this book will directly benefit readers. First, the book will allow engineers and managers who are responsible for the design and implementation of modern manufacturing systems to evaluate Petri nets for applications in their work. Second, it will provide sufficient breadth and depth to allow development of Petri-net-based industrial applications. Third, it will allow the basic Petri net material to be taught to industrial practitioners, students, and academic researchers much more efficiently. This will foster further research and applications of Petri nets in aiding the successful implementation of advanced manufacturing systems.
Book Synopsis Automated Guided Vehicle Systems by : Teruo Takahashi
Download or read book Automated Guided Vehicle Systems written by Teruo Takahashi and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AGVS-5 surveys current design and applications of Automated Guided Vehicles and points to future developments. The keynote paper by Professor Baumgarten of the Technical University of Berlin considered trends in German industry, and application papers went on to discuss the use of AGVs in flexible manufacturing, including the use of AGVS and AS/RS in integrated factory automation. Technical papers considered, amongst other topics, artificial intelligence techniques in AGVS, ultrasonic guidance of autonomous vehicles and autonomous robots for hazardous environments. The final session looked at planning techniques, including a flexible AGVS simulator and a rational approach for evaluating the number of AGVs. Invited contributors from Europe, North America and Asia gathered to make this a truly international event.
