Book Synopsis Dissipative Solitons by : Nail Akhmediev
Download or read book Dissipative Solitons written by Nail Akhmediev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-04-25 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the exciting topic of dissipative solitons, i.e. pulses or spatially localised waves in systems exhibiting gain and loss. Examples are laser systems, nonlinear resonators and optical transmission lines. The physical principles and mathematical concepts are explained in a clear and concise way, suitable for students and young researchers. The similarities and differences in the notion of a soliton between dissipative systems and Hamiltonian and integrable systems are discussed, and many examples are given. The contributions are written by the world's leading experts in the field, making it a unique exposition of this emerging topic.
Book Synopsis Control of Nonlinear Optical Structures: From the Guiding of Dissipative Solitons to Spatio– temporal Synchronisation by : Björn Gütlich
Download or read book Control of Nonlinear Optical Structures: From the Guiding of Dissipative Solitons to Spatio– temporal Synchronisation written by Björn Gütlich and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2007-09-07 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and characterisation of open loop control methods for spatiotemporal optical structures were the main objectives treated in this thesis. For this purpose, the LCLV single feedback system, which was chosen as model system, is particularly well suited due to large variety of patterns found in the system and because the system exhibits extremely large aspect ratios. Since the principal behaviour of the LCLV system had been explored before and the self-organised patterns spontaneously forming in the systems were known my main interest was to study the control the spontaneous behaviour of dissipative optical solitons and to explore spatio– temporal synchronisation in the LCLV system. Prior to the treatment of the main objective: Control of the LCLV single feedback system, I have in a small excursion reported on the modulation instability of incoherent optical beams propagating in photorefractive media. In this context, it was shown that both a first threshold of modulation instability, where the uniform beam breaks up into stripes, and the secondary threshold, where the beam completely breaks up into two dimensional filaments, can be controlled by changing the degree of the beam’s spatial coherence. In studying the control of modulation instability with incoherent beam a key prerequisite for controlling the interaction behavior of propagating optical solitons has been characterised. Using mutually incoherent or phase engineered optical solitons the interaction behaviour of solitons can be modified enabling the creation of more densely packed soliton arrays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guiding graduate students and researchers through the complex world of laser physics and nonlinear optics, this book provides an in-depth exploration of the dynamics of lasers and other relevant optical systems, under the umbrella of a unitary spatio-temporal vision. Adopting a balanced approach, the book covers traditional as well as special topics in laser physics, quantum electronics and nonlinear optics, treating them from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamical systems. These include laser emission, frequency generation, solitons, optically bistable systems, pulsations and chaos and optical pattern formation. It also provides a coherent and up-to-date treatment of the hierarchy of nonlinear optical models and of the rich variety of phenomena they describe, helping readers to understand the limits of validity of each model and the connections among the phenomena. It is ideal for graduate students and researchers in nonlinear optics, quantum electronics, laser physics and photonics.

Book Synopsis Coherent Structures in Granular Crystals by : Christopher Chong
Download or read book Coherent Structures in Granular Crystals written by Christopher Chong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes a number of fundamental developments at the interface of granular crystals and the mathematical and computational analysis of some of their key localized nonlinear wave solutions. The subject presents a blend of the appeal of granular crystals as a prototypical engineering tested for a variety of diverse applications, the novelty in the nonlinear physics of its coherent structures, and the tractability of a series of mathematical and computational techniques to analyse them. While the focus is on principal one-dimensional solutions such as shock waves, traveling waves, and discrete breathers, numerous extensions of the discussed patterns, e.g., in two dimensions, chains with defects, heterogeneous settings, and other recent developments are discussed. The emphasis on the subject was motivated by models in condensed matter physics, ferroelectrics, high energy physics, and statistical mechanics, leading to developments in mathematical analysis, numerical computation and insights on the physical aspects of the model. The book appeals to researchers in the field, as well as for graduate and advanced undergraduate students. It will be of interest to mathematicians, physicists and engineers alike.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems by : Frederica Darema
Download or read book Handbook of Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems written by Frederica Darema and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Second Volume in the series Handbook of Dynamic Data Driven Applications Systems (DDDAS) expands the scope of the methods and the application areas presented in the first Volume and aims to provide additional and extended content of the increasing set of science and engineering advances for new capabilities enabled through DDDAS. The methods and examples of breakthroughs presented in the book series capture the DDDAS paradigm and its scientific and technological impact and benefits. The DDDAS paradigm and the ensuing DDDAS-based frameworks for systems’ analysis and design have been shown to engender new and advanced capabilities for understanding, analysis, and management of engineered, natural, and societal systems (“applications systems”), and for the commensurate wide set of scientific and engineering fields and applications, as well as foundational areas. The DDDAS book series aims to be a reference source of many of the important research and development efforts conducted under the rubric of DDDAS, and to also inspire the broader communities of researchers and developers about the potential in their respective areas of interest, of the application and the exploitation of the DDDAS paradigm and the ensuing frameworks, through the examples and case studies presented, either within their own field or other fields of study. As in the first volume, the chapters in this book reflect research work conducted over the years starting in the 1990’s to the present. Here, the theory and application content are considered for: Foundational Methods Materials Systems Structural Systems Energy Systems Environmental Systems: Domain Assessment & Adverse Conditions/Wildfires Surveillance Systems Space Awareness Systems Healthcare Systems Decision Support Systems Cyber Security Systems Design of Computer Systems The readers of this book series will benefit from DDDAS theory advances such as object estimation, information fusion, and sensor management. The increased interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning and Neural Networks (NN) provides opportunities for DDDAS-based methods to show the key role DDDAS plays in enabling AI capabilities; address challenges that ML-alone does not, and also show how ML in combination with DDDAS-based methods can deliver the advanced capabilities sought; likewise, infusion of DDDAS-like approaches in NN-methods strengthens such methods. Moreover, the “DDDAS-based Digital Twin” or “Dynamic Digital Twin”, goes beyond the traditional DT notion where the model and the physical system are viewed side-by-side in a static way, to a paradigm where the model dynamically interacts with the physical system through its instrumentation, (per the DDDAS feed-back control loop between model and instrumentation).
