Book Synopsis Understanding Vision by : Li Zhaoping
Download or read book Understanding Vision written by Li Zhaoping and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the field of vision science has grown significantly in the past three decades, there have been few comprehensive books that showed readers how to adopt a computional approach to understanding visual perception, along with the underlying mechanisms in the brain. Understanding Vision explains the computational principles and models of biological visual processing, and in particular, of primate vision. The book is written in such a way that vision scientists, unfamiliar with mathematical details, should be able to conceptually follow the theoretical principles and their relationship with physiological, anatomical, and psychological observations, without going through the more mathematical pages. For those with a physical science background, especially those from machine vision, this book serves as an analytical introduction to biological vision. It can be used as a textbook or a reference book in a vision course, or a computational neuroscience course for graduate students or advanced undergraduate students. It is also suitable for self-learning by motivated readers. in addition, for those with a focused interest in just one of the topics in the book, it is feasible to read just the chapter on this topic without having read or fully comprehended the other chapters. In particular, Chapter 2 presents a brief overview of experimental observations on biological vision; Chapter 3 is on encoding of visual inputs, Chapter 5 is on visual attentional selection driven by sensory inputs, and Chapter 6 is on visual perception or decoding. Including many examples that clearly illustrate the application of computational principles to experimental observations, Understanding Vision is valuable for students and researchers in computational neuroscience, vision science, machine and computer vision, as well as physicists interested in visual processes.

Book Synopsis Quantitative and Statistical Data in Education by : Michel Larini
Download or read book Quantitative and Statistical Data in Education written by Michel Larini and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents different data collection and representation techniques: elementary descriptive statistics, confirmatory statistics, multivariate approaches and statistical modeling. Book Synopsis Adventures in Theoretical Physics by : Stephen L. Adler
Download or read book Adventures in Theoretical Physics written by Stephen L. Adler and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period 1964-1972, Stephen L. Adler wrote seminal papers on high energy neutrino processes, current algebras, soft pion theorems, sum rules, and perturbation theory anomalies that helped lay the foundations for our current standard model of elementary particle physics. These papers are reprinted here together with detailed historical commentaries describing how they evolved, their relation to other work in the field, and their connection to recent literature. Later important work by Dr. Adler on a wide range of topics in fundamental theory, phenomenology, and numerical methods, and their related historical background, is also covered in the commentaries and reprints. This book will be a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers in the fields in which Dr. Adler has worked, and for historians of science studying physics in the final third of the twentieth century, a period in which an enduring synthesis was achieved.

Book Synopsis Grid Homology for Knots and Links by : Peter S. Ozsvath
Download or read book Grid Homology for Knots and Links written by Peter S. Ozsvath and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knot theory is a classical area of low-dimensional topology, directly connected with the theory of three-manifolds and smooth four-manifold topology. In recent years, the subject has undergone transformative changes thanks to its connections with a number of other mathematical disciplines, including gauge theory; representation theory and categorification; contact geometry; and the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves. Starting from the combinatorial point of view on knots using their grid diagrams, this book serves as an introduction to knot theory, specifically as it relates to some of the above developments. After a brief overview of the background material in the subject, the book gives a self-contained treatment of knot Floer homology from the point of view of grid diagrams. Applications include computations of the unknotting number and slice genus of torus knots (asked first in the 1960s and settled in the 1990s), and tools to study variants of knot theory in the presence of a contact structure. Additional topics are presented to prepare readers for further study in holomorphic methods in low-dimensional topology, especially Heegaard Floer homology. The book could serve as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or part of a graduate course in knot theory. Standard background material is sketched in the text and the appendices.

Book Synopsis Micromechanics of Materials, with Applications by : Mark Kachanov
Download or read book Micromechanics of Materials, with Applications written by Mark Kachanov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on micromechanics explores both traditional aspects and the advances made in the last 10–15 years. The viewpoint it assumes is that the rapidly developing field of micromechanics, apart from being of fundamental scientific importance, is motivated by materials science applications. The introductory chapter provides the necessary background together with some less traditional material, examining e.g. approximate elastic symmetries, Rice’s technique of internal variables and multipole expansions. The remainder of the book is divided into the following parts: (A) classic results, which consist of Rift Valley Energy (RVE), Hill’s results, Eshelby’s results for ellipsoidal inhomogeneities, and approximate schemes for the effective properties; (B) results aimed at overcoming these limitations, such as volumes smaller than RVE, quantitative characterization of “irregular” microstructures, non-ellipsoidal inhomogeneities, and cross-property connections; (C) local fields and effects of interactions on them; and lastly (D) – the largest section – which explores applications to eight classes of materials that illustrate how to apply the micromechanics methodology to specific materials.

Book Synopsis High Energy Electron-positron Physics by : A Ali
Download or read book High Energy Electron-positron Physics written by A Ali and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1988-08-01 with total page 893 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the termination of the physics program at PETRA, and with the start of TRISTAN and the SLC and later LEP, an era of e+e- physics has come to an end and a new one begins. The field is changing from a field of few specialists, to becoming one of the mainstream efforts of the high energy community. It seems appropriate at this moment to summarize what has been learned over the past years, in a way most useful to any high energy physicists, in particular to newcomers in the e+e- field. This is the purpose of the book. This book should be used as a reference for future workers in the field of e+e- interactions. It includes the most relevant data, parametrizations, theoretical background, and a chapter on detectors.
