Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Hydrology of Eastern United States, 1904 In this paper Mr. Whitney presents an account of the outbreak of the typhoid epidemic of 1903 and the steps taken by various local bodies to obtain a pure supply. The deep wells sunk in the gravels, sands, and clays in the valley of Cayuga Inlet just above Ithaca are described, and the source and geologic occurrence of the supply are discussed. Records of afl of the wells are given, the more important being shown by diagrams. The success of the wells, both as to the quantity and the quality of the water, is of special interest, as like supplies could doubtless be obtained at many points in New York and New England which are similarly situated.
