Book excerpt: The investigation of the kinematics and dynamics of the Earth has achieved remarkable progresses in the last decades in understanding and explaining a large variety of geo- dynamical, geophysical and geological phenomena. The impact of increasingly precise geodetic space-time measurements and analyses have much contributed to these results. Papers presented atthe 7th International Symposium on Geodesy and Physics of the Earth focus onfour topics: - Present Day Tectonic Motions - Gravity Field and its Variation - Earth Rotation Characteristics - International Programs for Geodesy and Geodynamics Researchers and advanced students may use this volume as a comprehensive reference of concepts, techniques and results.

Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geodynamics Series, Volume 24. There are times in the history of a science when the evolving technology has been combined with a singleness of purpose to make possible the next great step. For space geodesy the decade of the 1980s was one of those times. Initiated in the early 1980s, the NASA Crustal Dynamics Project (CDP), a global venture of unprecedented proportions, exploited new technologies to confirm and refine tectonic theories and to advance geodynamics. The highlights of the efforts of scientists and engineers from some 30 countries are contained in the 54 papers collected in three volumes which are dedicated to the memory of Edward A. (Ted) Flinn, the former Chief Scientist of the NASA Geodynamics Program.

Book excerpt: Our planet is currently experiencing substantial changes due to natural phen- ena and direct or indirect human interactions. Observations from space are the only means to monitor and quantify these changes on a global and long-term p- spective. Continuous time series of a large set of Earth system parameters are needed in order to better understand the processes causing these changes, as well as their interactions. This knowledge is needed to build comprehensive Earth s- tem models used for analysis and prediction of the changing Earth. Geodesy and geophysics contribute to the understanding of system Earth through the observation of global parameter sets in space and time, such as tectonic motion, Earth surface deformation, sea level changes and gravity, magnetic and atmospheric elds. In the framework of the German geoscience research and development p- gramme GEOTECHNOLOGIEN, research projects related to the theme “Observing the Earth System from Space” have been funded within two consecutive phases since 2002, both covering 3 years. The projects address data analysis and model development using the satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE, GOCE and comp- mentary ground or airborne observations. The results of the rst phase projects have been published in the Springer book, titled “Observation of the Earth System from Space”, edited by Flury, Rummel, Reigber, Rothacher, Boedecker and Schreiber in 2006. The present book, titled “System Earth via Geodetic-Geophysical Space Techniques” summarizes in 40 scienti c papers the results of eight coordinated research projects funded in the second phase of this programme (2005–2008).

Book excerpt: Geodetic measurements provide high-accuracy observations of the deformation of the Earth on time-scales ranging from a few hours to decades; they constitute an integral part of every study of the planet's dynamic behavior. This book describes geodetic methods and results that are relevant to the study of the Earth, along with the geophysical and geological implications of these observations. The measurement techniques include classical terrestrial observations in use since the late nineteenth century as well as modern methods based on space technology, interferometric observations of radio stars, the tracking of satellites, and laser-ranging to the Moon. Because a complete interpretation of the geodetic observations requires a discussion of Earth physics, geological processes, and meteorological and oceanographic phenomena, this book will be of interest to all geophysicists.

Book excerpt: The keys to the success of an enterprise such as the Treatise on Geophysics are the editors of the individual volumes and the authors who have contributed chapters. The editors are leaders in their fields of expertise, as distinguished a group of geophysicists as could be assembled on the planet. They know well the topics that had to be covered to achieve the breadth and depth required by the Treatise, and they know who were the best of their colleagues to write on each subject. The list of chapter authors is an impressive one, consisting of geophysicists who have made major contributions to their fields of study. The quality and coverage achieved by this group of editors and authors has insured that the Treatise will be the definitive major reference work and textbook in geophysics. Each volume of the Treatise begins with an Overview chapter by the volume editor. The Overviews provide the editors' perspectives of their fields, views of the past, present, and future. They also summarize the contents of their volumes and discuss important topics not addressed elsewhere in the chapters. The Overview chapters are excellent introductions to their volumes. The volumes of the Treatise are: Volume 1: Seismology and Structure of the Earth Volume 2: Mineral Physics Volume 3: Geodesy Volume 4: Earthquake Seismology Volume 5: Geomagnetism Volume 6: Crustal and Lithosphere Dynamics Volume 7: Mantle Dynamics Volume 8: Core Dynamics Volume 9: Evolution of the Earth Volume 10: Planets and Moons An eleventh volume of the Treatise provides a comprehensive index. Self-contained volumes start with an overview of the subject then explores each topic with in depth detail Extensive reference lists and cross references with other volumes to facilitate further research Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding Content suited for both the expert and non-expert

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains theory and applications of gravity both for physical geodesy and geophysics. It identifies classical and modern topics for studying the Earth. Worked-out examples illustrate basic but important concepts of the Earth’s gravity field. In addition, coverage details the Geodetic Reference System 1980, a versatile tool in most applications of gravity data. The authors first introduce the necessary mathematics. They then review classic physical geodesy, including its integral formulas, height systems and their determinations. The next chapter presents modern physical geodesy starting with the original concepts of M.S. Molodensky. A major part of this chapter is a variety of modifying Stokes’ formula for geoid computation by combining terrestrial gravity data and an Earth Gravitational Model. Coverage continues with a discussion that compares today’s methods for modifying Stokes’ formulas for geoid and quasigeoid determination, a description of several modern tools in physical geodesy, and a review of methods for gravity inversion as well as analyses for temporal changes of the gravity field. This book aims to broaden the view of scientists and students in geodesy and geophysics. With a focus on theory, it provides basic and some in-depth knowledge about the field from a geodesist’s perspective. /div
