Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies and Sketches in Modern Literature: Periodical Contributions During a slow and oft-retarded recovery from a serious ill ness, the author, laid aside from his usual literary engage ments. Was induced to make the following selection of Studies and Sketches' from a very considerable mass of Magazine articles which he had previously written. He had no design of sitting in judgment upon the character of his past labours, nor did he regard that selection as a sifting of the 'wheat' from the - he was not vain enough to fancy that his volume would consist purely of the former, nor did he afl'ect the voluntary humility' of holding that the re jected materials were fitly represented by the latter. There was a large accumulation of articles nearly equal to each other in value (whatever that might be) so that, if he had adopted such a test, his perplexity in choosing would have been insuperable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Old English Literature In the second group, to which C and D belong 2, Christ's letter has been brought into connexion with a certain deacon Nial, who comes to life again after having been dead for some time, and announces that fire is to fall upon the earth in consequence of men's disbelief in the heavenly letter. This version concludes with the statement that F lorentius was Pope, and Petrus Bishop of Rome, when the letter was found upon St. Peter's altar. In the third group Peter, Bishop of Antioch, is the recipient of the letter from heaven. Of this group Priebsch has only one oe. Representative, viz. E, but there is a second version belonging to it (f) which, as it has not yet been published, I give below in full. It is contained in the eleventh-century ms. 162 (corpus Christi College, Cam bridge), pp. 44 - 52. In printing I have disregarded the manuscript punctuation, as well as the use of capitals; the contractions are indicated by italics in other respects I have followed the ms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions of Physicians to English and American Literature The object of this little volume is to give an account of the activity of physicians in the field of general literature. It is impossible in a volume of this size to give more than an outline of the subject, and I have considered only the most prominent authors. Anything like a complete list would require several large volumes. I have frequently used selections which are used.in Chambers' and in Cleveland's works on English literature, and here make acknowledgment. The atti tude of the American people toward education is evidenced by this general establishment of schools and the liberal provision for their sup port. The influence of this attitude on educa tion itself has been twofold: its function and scope have been enlarged; its intrinsic value and prestige have been questioned. The inadequacy of the old conception of education to meet the demands and the doubts has become such a prolific source of disquietude and dis satisfaction that ere long a new one must needs be constructed. The new standard, with its adaptation to social and economic conditions, bids fair to be the dominant factor in the social product of the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Science of Education I am in nowise disposed to break with the past and to dream of an approaching revolution in educational theory and practice. A better future for the schools is doubt less foreordained, but this is to be a growth, slow and halting, like all higher forms Of growth, and a growth out of past conditions and products. The institutions of a people, to be serviceable and helpful, cannot be far in advance of their actual condition; and if the dream of the educational utopist could be realized in form, it would be inoperative with men and things as they are. It is well that our previsions are only relative. We need to aspire in order that we may grow; but the roots Of all true growth in civilization reach far back into the soil of the past. The Book of Snobs, from its magnitude, is reserved for the next volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to Current Literature What, however, so many people are laboring for is not the establishment of universal righteousness, but a condition of things in which they will be at liberty to gratify their pride, envy, emulation, and malice, Without being inconvenienced with the grosser forms of evil. Now, this is a condition of things for the establishment of which God hasnot provided any scheme and, I may further say, that he is not going to provide any. It is a divine ordinance that where evil exists at all it shall assume a variety of forms, which come into col lision with one another and hold one another in check and this, together with the consequences of sin upon the actor, ensures a condition of things in' which in no single instance can any transgression of God's laws take place without causing suffering in some form - possz'ély to others, terrain/y to the transgressor. I am not indeed referring to final retri bution, but to our experience in 271219 1272. This is a merciful provision, for if men could sin with impunity a condition of moral evil would prevail such as at present we can hardly conceive of. N ow it is to those who are thus conscious of sin and consequent suffering that Jesus Christ appeals O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help. Now, let the individual put Christ's claims to the test. Itis what Christ wants prove me now and I shall be very glad to hear in what sense He proves a failure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Literature of the Fine Arts In perusing the life of a Painter the reader is reminded at the outset that it is the man rather than the artist who invites attention. The annals of a Painter's works may be comprised within a brief catalogue of subjects, dates, and patrons; - the critical estimate of them, as on most works of art which convey their own interpretation, may be given in comparatively few words; - the events in the life of a laborious and successful painter are generally scanty. It follows, therefore, that if the mind which underlies the art should not have found expression in forms of more general interest, there remain but slender materials for a memoir. Nor is it safe to infer that a Painter's mind may in great measure be read through his works; - his mode of viewing Nature, his feeling for Art are seen in them; but the force or the refinement which they display are not invariably recognisable in the individual who gave them birth.
