Book excerpt: Dans une première partie de ce travail, nous évoquerons le cas clinique d'un enfant sans langage chez lequel on trouve des signes autistiques et une déficience auditive (dans un contexte que l'on peut qualifier de multi-handicap). Nous essayerons de préciser les définitions et les classifications. La deuxième partie constitue un essai de repérage méthodologique centré sur les rapports existants entre ces deux pathologies, à la fois au niveau de l'enfant et de ses parents. Dans la troisième partie nous généraliserons, à partir de ce cas clinique, sur l'aspect audiophonologique en laissant de côté l'aspect purement psychiatrique. Toutefois, nous aborderons la guidance parentale et la restauration de la communication prélinguistique. En effet, le langage dès son apparition, doit être envisagé surtout en tant que constituant un instrument spécialisé de régulation des intéractions communicatives. Enfin, nous parlerons de la langue des signes des déficients auditifs, et du langage à expression gestuelle.

Over the course of the nineteenth century, the concept of madness was subjected to an economically saturated style of psychiatric reasoning. Psychiatrists across Western Europe and the United States attributed financial and even moral value to an array of pathological conditions, such that some mental disorders were seen as financial assets and others as economic liabilities. By turning to economic conduct and asking whether patients, such as eccentrics, appeared capable of managing their financial affairs and money, psychiatrists could often circumvent uncertainties about a person's psychiatric health. What we learn is how in psychiatry an economic lens was used to reveal mental illness and uncover the hidden economic value of pathology itself. The psychiatric turn to economic reasoning signaled a transformation of the very idea of value in the modern North Atlantic. For the differences between the most common forms of social valuation-moral value, medical value, and economic value-were flattened and rendered equivalent and interchangeable. If what was good and what was healthy was increasingly conflated with what was remunerative (and vice versa), then a conceptual space opened through which madness itself could be converted into an economic form and subsequently redeemed, and even revered"--

Acquired aphasia in children, albeit rare, is a unique circumstance in which to study the relations between language and the brain during cerebral maturation. Its study further contributes to our understanding of the recovery processes and brain plasticity during childhood. But while there is a great amount of information and experimental work on brain-behaviour relationships in adult subjects, the literature about the effects of focal brain lesions in children is both exiguous and scattered throughout scientific journals and books. We felt it was time to organize a meeting where scientists in this field could compare their experiences and discuss ideas coming from different areas of research. A workshop on Acquired Aphasia in Children was held in Sintra, Portugal, on September 13-15, 1990, and attended by 44 participants from 13 differents countries. The atmosphere was relaxed and informal and the group was kept small to achieve this effect. It was a very lively and pleasant meeting. Some consensus was indeed arrived at concerning methodological problems, definition of terms, and guidelines for future research.
