Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology of the Fox Islands, Maine: A Contribution to the Study of Old Volcanics The following geological study of the Fox Islands is presented as a contribution to the solution of the problem of the identification and interpretation of ancient volcanic rocks. The writer owes his interest in this subject to the late Professor George H. Williams, whose enthusiasm in petrographical research was so inspiring to his students. The Fox Islands area was visited and studied in 1893 by Dr. W. S. Bayley of Colby University, and the writer wishes to acknowledge the kindness of Dr. Bayley in granting him the privilege of studying the rocks collected at that time, as well as the accompanying full suite of thin-sections. The area was studied and the different series mapped by the writer in the spring of 1895, and a subsequent visit was made in the spring of 1896. In the preparation of this paper, assistance has been received from Prof. Clark, Dr. Mathews, and Messrs. Gilbert and Willis of the Geological Department of this University, and Dr. Bayley of Colby University, to all of whom the writer desires to express his indebtedness. He also wishes to acknowledge the courtesy of Professors Remsen and Morse of the Chemical Department, under whose direction rock-analyses were kindly made by Messrs. E. W. Magruder and W. A. Jones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Report on the Geology of the State of Maine, 1838 Few subjects have, for many years, more strongly excited public attention, than the Science of Geology; and we may justly attribute this general interest to the improved condition of the science, and its numerous applications to useful purposes. Formerly, rude conjectures, imaginary hypotheses, and vague theories, which naturally arose from an imperfect knowledge of the subject, owing to the imperfections of the collateral branch es of Natural History, caused many intelligent persons to con sider the whole science as uncertain and chimerical. This state of things has, however, been succeeded by more sound and perfect knowledge, and no longer is Geology reproached with being merely visionary and speculative. It has now assumed the rank of an accurate and certain science, adapted to the physical and intellectual wants of an enlightened community - revealing to us the situations in which are found our valuable metallic ores, quarries of building. Mate rials, beds of limestone, and a thousand other articles of daily use. It traces out the precise situation in which we may ex pect to find fossil coal, and gives us a knowledge of the means of making rational explorations for that valuable combustible. Soils being mainly composed of the detritus of rocks, and those materials having been spread out on the surface of the globe, in conformity to regular geological laws, a just knowledge of their mineral components, and their order of distribution, serves to direct the farmer in the selection of his farm, and the cultivation of the earth. It would be easy to trace out many other good results, which are attainable by this science, but so general has now become a knowledge of the subject, that it will be unnecessary for me to enter into minute details. During the 1902 - 3 session of the Maine legislature an effort was made by petitioners resident in Washington County to obtain from the State an appropriation of for coal exploration. The resolve proposed contained a proviso necessitating an additional contribution of by individuals or corporations interested. The thus procured was to be expended in drilling for coal at the most promising' localities. The resolve failed to pass, but the Maine Survey Commission decided that the same results could be accomplished by the expenditure of a small portion of the general appropriation for geologic work in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey. Then they spent more than a month in examining the country watered by the Schoodic Lakes and the St. Croix river, besides an important exploration of the iron ore and fossiliferous limestone of northern Aroostook county. The last work of the season was the explora tion of the large lakes in Franklin and Oxford counties. We propose to divide this report into three parts. Part I will embrace the observations that have been made in Natural History during the past year, in all the departments of Zoology and Botany. Part II will treat of whatever may have been learned respecting the rocks and fossils of the State since the publication of the Pre liminary Report; while Part III will be devoted to the chemical portion of the general report. We shall not address your Honor able Assembly with each special report, but with this introduction present the several fragments in the most natural order possible. We have found it very difficult to devise an unexceptionable mode of presenting our materials, owing to their fragmentary character.
