Book excerpt: NOTRE PRINCIPAL RESULTAT EST L'INTRODUCTION D'UNE METHODE DE DETERMINATION DE MOTIFS 3D APPLICABLE A TOUT TYPE DE SURFACE INDUSTRIELLE. NOUS UTILISONS UNE ADAPTATION DE L'ALGORITHME DE DETERMINATION DE LIGNES DE PARTAGE DES EAUX PAR IMMERSION DE L. VINCENT, BASEE SUR UNE DEFINITION PRECISE DE LA NOTION DE MOTIF 3D EN TERMES DE BASSINS VERSANTS. NOTRE METHODE ASSOCIE LES MOTIFS NON SIGNIFICATIFS DE FACON INDIRECTE, EN REMPLISSANT JUSQU'A LEUR POINT DE DEBORDEMENT CEUX DONT LA SURFACE A CE NIVEAU EST INFERIEURE A UNE SURFACE SEUIL AVANT DE DETERMINER LES LIGNES DE PARTAGE DES EAUX. CETTE METHODE PERMET D'EFFECTUER UNE ANALYSE MULTIRESOLUTION DES SURFACE INDUSTRIELLES INTEGRANT NOTAMMENT LE CALCUL DE PARAMETRES STATISTIQUES SUR LES MOTIFS 3D. NOUS NOUS SOMMES PAR AILLEURS INTERESSES A LA CARACTERISATION DE L'ANISOTROPIE D'UNE SURFACE. DEUX METHODES ORIGINALES SONT PRESENTEES, DANS LESQUELLES UNE ROSE DES DIRECTIONS EST CONSTRUITE, SOIT A PARTIR DES SEGMENTS CONSTITUANT LES LIMITES DES MOTIFS, SOIT A PARTIR DES LIGNES DE NIVEAUX ASSOCIEES A UNE ALTITUDE DE COUPE PARTICULIERE. SONT EGALEMENT INTRODUITS DES TAUX D'ANISOTROPIE PERMETTANT DE QUANTIFIER L'ANISOTROPIE ET D'EVALUER LES CONTRIBUTIONS DES DIFFERENTES ORIENTATIONS DANS LE CAS DE SURFACES MULTIDIRECTIONNELLES. DEUX AUTRES METHODES ORIGINALES SONT PRESENTEES, QUI UTILISENT LA NOTION DE MOTIF 3D DEFINIE PRECEDEMMENT POUR RESOUDRE DES PROBLEMES DE CARACTERISATION SPECIFIQUES. LA PREMIERE EST DESTINEE AUX SURFACES PRESENTANT DES RAYURES COURBES ET LA SECONDE PERMET DE CARACTERISER LES SURFACES A PLATEAU, QUI PRESENTENT UNE DISTRIBUTION DES HAUTEURS ASYMETRIQUE, TRES EFFILEE VERS LE BAS ET DONT LE MAXIMUM EST ATTEINT POUR UNE ALTITUDE ELEVEE.

This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The function of a component part can be profoundly affected by its surface topography. There are many examples in nature of surfaces that have a well-controlled topography to affect their function. Examples include the hydrophobic effect of the lotus leaf, the reduction of fluid drag due to the riblet structure of shark skin, the directional adhesion of the gecko foot and the angular sensitivity of the multi-faceted fly eye. Surface structuring is also being used extensively in modern manufacturing. In this way many properties can be altered, for example optical, tribological, biological and fluidic. Previously, single line (profile) measurements were adequate to control manufacture of surfaces, but as the need to control the functionality of surfaces increases, there is a growing need for three-dimensional (areal) measurement and characterisation techniques. For this reason there has been considerable research, development and standardisation of areal techniques. This book will present the areal framework that is being adopted by the international community. Whereas previous books have concentrated on the measurement aspects, this book concentrates on the characterisation techniques, i.e. how to interpret the measurement data to give the appropriate (functional) information for a given task. The first part of the book presents the characterisation methods and the second part case studies that highlight the use of areal methods in a broad range of subject areas - from automobile manufacture to archaeology. Contents Introduction to Surface Topography The Areal Field Parameters The Areal Feature Parameters Areal Filtering Methods Areal Form Removal Areal Fractal Methods Choosing the Appropriate Parameter Characterisation of Individual Areal Features Multi-Scale Signature of Surface Topography Correlation of Areal Surface Texture Parameters to Solar Cell Efficiency Characterisation of Cylinder Liner Honing Textures for Production Control Characterisation of the Mechanical Bond Strength for Copper on Glass Plating Applications Inspection of Laser Structured Cams and Conrods Road Surfaces

It has been prepared with the support of the European Community’s Directorate General XII and represents the culmination of research conducted by 11 international partners as part of an EU-funded project. The aim of the project is to inform standards bodies of the possibilities that exist for a new international standard covering the field of 3D surface characterisation. The book covers a description of the proposed 3D surface parameters and advanced filtering techniques using wavelet and robust Gaussian methodologies. The next generation areal surface characterisation theories are discussed and their practical implementation is illustrated. It describes techniques for calibration of 3D instrumentation, including stylus instruments as well as scanning probe instrumentation. Practical verification of the 3D parameters and the filtering is illustrated through a series of case studies which cover bio-implant surfaces, automotive cylinder liner and steel sheet. Finally, future developments of the subject are alluded to and implications for future standardisation and development are discussed.

Book excerpt: This collection of papers by internationally known scientists in the field of geocryology was originally presented as a series of lectures at the University of British Columbia in 1980-1 in honour of J. Ross MacKay. Together they illustrate the central dilemma in a science where fieldwork must be undertaken in the harsh periglacial environment and where, consequently, it is difficult to test theory rigorously. The papers provide a valuable overview of the current status of international research in a wide area of the field -- permafrost, patterned ground, and cold climate phenomena and processes. The treatment varies from anecdotal, historical, and descriptive to mathematical.

Book excerpt: Earthen architecture constitutes one of the most diverse forms of cultural heritage and one of the most challenging to preserve. It dates from all periods and is found on all continents but is particularly prevalent in Africa, where it has been a building tradition for centuries. Sites range from ancestral cities in Mali to the palaces of Abomey in Benin, from monuments and mosques in Iran and Buddhist temples on the Silk Road to Spanish missions in California. This volume's sixty-four papers address such themes as earthen architecture in Mali, the conservation of living sites, local knowledge systems and intangible aspects, seismic and other natural forces, the conservation and management of archaeological sites, research advances, and training.

Book excerpt: Unbiased Stereology, Second Edition is a practical guide to making unbiased 3-D measurements via the microscope. Only those stereological techniques which have been tried and tested by real application are included. Although this technology is essentially mathematical and statistical, the authors do not immerse the reader in complex analysis, but rather provide simple heuristic explanations and references to the original proof, and illustrate the theory by analogies drawn from everyday experience. To give practical experience in application of the techniques, exercises are provided at the end of each chapter, complete with detailed worked answers.
