Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LES TRAVAUX THEORIQUES SUR LES SUSPENSIONS COLLOIDALES SE SONT NATURELLEMENT FOCALISES SUR LE MELANGE BINAIRE DE SPHERES DURES DANS LESQUELS LES FORCES DE DEPLETION RESULTANT DE LA DISSYMETRIE DE TAILLE ENTRE PARTICULES DE SOLVANT ET DE SOLUTE CONDUISENT INVARIABLEMENT A UNE INSTABILITE DE LA SUSPENSION. CE TRAVAIL DIFFERE DES PRECEDENTS PAR LA PRISE EN COMPTE DES CONTRIBUTIONS ATTRACTIVES AU NIVEAU DU DIAGRAMME DE PHASE, ET LA MISE EN EVIDENCE DES SPECIFICITES QU'ELLES RETABLISSENT COMPARATIVEMENT A CELUI DU MELANGE DE SPHERES DURES. NOUS AVONS D'ABORD PRESENTE LES RAISONS NOUS AYANT AMENE A DECRIRE LE MELANGE SOLVANT/SOLUTE COMME UN FLUIDE EFFECTIF MONOCOMPOSANT DE PARTICULES DE SOLUTE. PAR LA SUITE, NOUS AVONS CHERCHE A MESURER LES EFFETS RESPECTIFS DES DIFFERENTES INTERACTIONS EN JEU ET EFFECTUE UNE CERTAINES SYSTEMATIQUE EN VUE DE COMPRENDRE LEUR INFLUENCE SUR LE POTENTIEL EFFECTIF. LA COMPARAISON DE LA THEORIE DES EQUATIONS INTEGRALES RHNC AUX SIMULATIONS EXISTANTES MONTRE SA CAPACITE A DECRIRE UN FLUIDE EFFECTIF (POTENTIEL INTENSE AU CONTACT, ETROIT ET OSCILLATOIRE). L'UTILISATION DE CES POTENTIELS EXTREMES REDUIT LE DOMAINE DE CONVERGENCE DE LA METHODE. NOUS AVONS ALORS MONTRE QUE LE DIAGRAMME PEUT ETRE OBTENU PAR UNE METHODE D'EXTRAPOLATION. NOUS NOUS SOMMES FINALEMENT LIMITES A L'ETUDE DE DEUX CAS PARTICULIERS DE POTENTIELS EFFECTIFS AVEC ATTRACTIONS, ILLUSTRATIFS DE LA METHODE DE TRAITEMENT DU MELANGE. LES DIAGRAMMES DE PHASES QUE NOUS AVONS OBTENUS REVELENT DES SITUATIONS POUVANT CORRESPONDRE A CERTAINES SUSPENSIONS COLLOIDALES REELLES ET MONTRENT LE CARACTERE NON UNIVERSEL DU DIAGRAMME DE PHASE DU MELANGE BINAIRE DE SPHERES DURES. LA METHODE PROPOSEE DANS CE MEMOIRE PERMET DONC UNE ETUDE RELATIVEMENT SYSTEMATIQUE DU ROLE DES FORCES ATTRACTIVES. LES RESULTATS ENCOURAGEANTS OBTENUS NECESSITERONT CEPENDANT DES CONTROLES PAR LE BIAIS DE SIMULATIONS, MALGRE LES DIFFICULTES PROPRES A CELLES-CI DANS CES SITUATIONS DE GRANDE DISSYMETRIES DE TAILLE.

Book Synopsis Emulsion Science by : Jerôme Bibette
Download or read book Emulsion Science written by Jerôme Bibette and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emulsions occur either as end products or during the processing of products in a huge range of areas including the food, agrochemical, pharmaceuticals, paints and oil industries. As end products, emulsions allow to avoid organic solvent in processing hydrophobic coatings. Emulsion technology is a suitable approach to vehicle viscous phases. It is also a remarkable mean of targeting actives or capturing specific species. The range of applications of emulsions progresses and their manufacturing becomes more and more sophisticated. Besides this broad domain of technological interest, emulsions are raising a variety of fundamental questions at the frontier between physic and chem istry. Indeed, as a class of soft colloidal materials, emulsions science is linked to various aspects of these disciplines: phase transitions, surface forces and wetting, metastability and hydrodynamic instabilities, mechanical properties and flow. The aim of this book is to review the main important concepts governing emulsion science. In Chapter 2, repulsive interactions between liquid films are discussed as well as adhesive interaction related to wetting. In Chap ter 3, consequences of weak and strong attractions are presented, related to the well accepted liquid solid transition analogy. In Chapter 4, the basics of both bulk compressibility and shear elasticity are presented, the role of disorder being the most important aspect of the elastic behavior of these soft systems. In Chapter 5 the central question of the emulsion lifetime related to metastability is discussed.

Book excerpt: Updated translation from the French of a work first published in 1987, and intended as a sequel to the principal author's The structure of matter: from the blue sky to liquid crystals (1984). Intended to engage the interest of undergraduates and general readers, the book treats (in five chapters) the thermal, electrical, magnetic and mechanical properties of solids, and (in the final chapter) diffusion. Cleanly written and nicely illustrated descriptive text, with all mathematical material confined to boxes that some readers might want to omit in their entirety. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a workshop, the scientific reviews and the contributed papers presented at the symposium. The document presents a brief historical summary of marine research in the Gulf; reports the discussions, conclusions and recommendations of the different working groups on oceanography (physics, biology, chemistry and sedimentology) and on the fishery (fish and invertebrates); then presents the discussions of each multidisciplinary working group, centered around how the St. Lawrence system may be used as a natural laboratory which will contribute to the solution of major long-term problems of conservation of natural resources and of the quality of the environment.
Book Synopsis Flows and Chemical Reactions in Heterogeneous Mixtures by : Roger Prud'homme
Download or read book Flows and Chemical Reactions in Heterogeneous Mixtures written by Roger Prud'homme and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book - a sequel of previous publications 'Flows and Chemical Reactions' and 'Chemical Reactions in Flows and Homogeneous Mixtures' - is devoted to flows with chemical reactions in heterogeneous environments. Heterogeneous media in this volume include interfaces and lines. They may be the site of radiation. Each type of flow is the subject of a chapter in this volume. We consider first, in Chapter 1, the question of the generation of environments biphasic individuals: dusty gas, mist, bubble flow. Chapter 2 is devoted to the study at the mesoscopic scale: particle-fluid exchange of momentum and heat with determination of the respective exchange coefficients. In Chapter 3, we establish simplified equations of macroscopic balance for mass, for the momentum and energy, in the case of particles of one size (monodisperse suspension). Radiative phenomena are presented in Chapter 5.
