Book excerpt: Il s'agit essentiellement d'une étude théorique et numérique de la diffraction d'une onde électromagnétique plane par des réseaux. Pour des matériaux isotropes, nous suggérons une amélioration de la "méthode différentielle", et nous présentons une "méthode de synthèse" dont l'idée est de représenter le champ diffracté par le champ émis par un ensemble de sources fictives convenablement choisies et situées au voisinage du profil du réseau. La "méthode de YASUURA", basée sur la décomposition du champ diffracté en ondes planes, se trouve être un cas particulier de cette méthode. Nous poursuivons par une étude de la propagation dans des milieux présentant une anisotropie diélectrique, en évoquant notamment les problèmes liés à la recherche des solutions élémentaires de l'équation de propagation (fonctions de GREEN). Cette étude est mise à profit pour traiter ensuite : des empilements de couches anisotropes, des réseaux anisotropes par la "méthode différentielle", puis des réseaux anisotropes de permittivité diagonale au moyen d'une "méthode intégrale". Un effort a été fait pour formuler les différentes méthodes utilisées de façon similaire : il s'agit de caractériser les champs diffractés par leur appartenance à des espaces adéquats. Ces espaces sont, selon les méthodes, décrits par des bases, des familles totales, ou bien à l'aide d'opérateurs ("projecteurs de CALDERON").

Nous utilisons une méthode intégrale basée sur le formalisme de Harrington. Le développement d'une fonction de Green bipériodique rapide nous permet de réduire le nombre d'inconnues à la première cellule élémentaire. Nous simulons alors des structures constituées d'une source entourée d'un cristal photonique métallique surmontant un plan de masse. Le champ émis par la source est décomposé en paquet d'ondes planes par FFT, chaque onde plane donnant naissance à un problème de type réseau. Ces structures permettent de réaliser des antennes directives compactes en télécommunication micro-ondes. Deux solutions sont étudiées : l'une consiste en une cavité résonnante Fabry-Pérot, l'autre utilise les propriétés ultraréfractives des cristaux photoniques en bord de bande interdite (métamatériau). Les résultats obtenus sont confirmés expérimentalement.

The grating formula (which pre dicts the diffraction angles for a given angle of incidence) was established, exper imentally verified, and intensively used as a source for textbook problems. Indeed those grating properties, we can call optical properties, were taught'in a satisfac tory manner and the students were able to clearly understand the diffraction and dispersion of light by gratings. On the other hand, little was said about the "energy properties", i. e. , about the prediction of efficiencies. Of course, the existence of the blaze effect was pointed out, but very frequently nothing else was taught about the efficiency curves. At most a good student had to know that, for an eche lette grating, the efficiency in a given order can approach unity insofar as the diffracted wave vector can be deduced from the incident one by a specular reflexion on the large facet. Actually this rule of thumb was generally sufficient to make good use of the optical gratings available about thirty years ago. Thanks to the spectacular improvements in grating manufacture after the end of the second world war, it became possible to obtain very good gratings with more and more lines per mm. Nowadays, in gratings used in the visible region, a spacing small er than half a micron is common.
