Book Synopsis Faecal Sludge Management by : Linda Strande
Download or read book Faecal Sludge Management written by Linda Strande and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.
Book Synopsis Climate Change and Its Impacts by : Colleen Murphy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to a need for a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the consequences of climate change, this book brings experts in climate science, engineering, urban planning, and conservation biology into conversation with scholars in law, geography, anthropology and ethics. It provides insights into how climate change is conceptualized in different fields. The book also aims to contribute to developing successful and multifaceted strategies that promote global, intergenerational and environmental justice. Among the topics addressed are the effects of climate change on the likelihood and magnitude of natural hazards, an assessment of civil infrastructure vulnerabilities, resilience assessment for coastal communities, an ethical framework to evaluate behavior that contributes to climate change, as well as policies and cultural shifts that might help humanity to respond adequately to climate change.

Book Synopsis On the Statistical Analysis of Series of Observations by : R. Sneyers
Download or read book On the Statistical Analysis of Series of Observations written by R. Sneyers and published by Unipub. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no longer disputed nowadays that mathematical statistics is the main tool to be used in climatology. Mathematical statistics is in fact the science of random models and the purpose of the statistics analysis of series of observations is to from among the models which science makes available, the one which bes represents the behaviour of the observed phenomenon. Thi atitude may be justifed in two ways. From the theoretical point of view, the representation of the observad phenomenon by a model depending on aminimum number of paramenters anables objective statistical conslusions to be compared with the physical theories put forward, iether to confirm their validity or to reveal weaknesse: thus statistical analysis appears as a means for progress in the ofresearch. From the practical point view, due to the efficiency of methods of statistical analysis, their utilization ensures that the best use is made of the information accumulated dy the series of observations and that the maximum benefic will be derived from the capital represented by this information. If we think of the investments and operational cost which have been approved for the acquisition of the series of observations and of the economic value of these, which is continually demonstrated in the applications of meteorology and climatology, the necessity of such a position becomes obvious.
