Book excerpt: Cette thèse propose de nouveaux algorithmes de squelettisation d'images 2D et 3D selon deux approches : l'approche topologie digitale et l'approche topologie discrète. Dans la première partie, nous rappelons les notions fondamentales de topologie digitale et quelques algorithmes de squelettisation parmi les plus connus, basés sur la suppression de certains points simples. Puis, nous proposons une méthodologie permettant la production d'algorithmes de squelettisation fondés sur la suppression en parallèle de points P-simples. De tels algorithmes sont élaborés de façon à ce qu'ils suppriment au moins les points retirés par un autre algorithme donné. Nous appliquons cette méthodologie et produisons deux nouveaux algorithmes. Bien que les résultats semblent satisfaisants, la recherche et la mise en œuvre de tels algorithmes restent difficiles. Dans la deuxième partie, nous utilisons le cadre mathématique des ordres. De faç on plus directe qu'auparavant, nous proposons un algorithme de squelettisation consistant en la répétition de la suppression parallèle de points (n-simples, puis en la suppression parallèle de points (n-simples. Nous avons également proposé des définitions originales de points terminaux, nous permettant l'obtention de squelettes curvilignes ou surfaciques. Le schéma général de squelettisation est utilisé sur des images 2D, 3D binaires et 2D en niveaux de gris. Enfin, une étude de filtrage parallèle de squelettes est développée

Après un descriptif des bases de topologie et de graphe, où nous nous baserons sur les complexes cellulaires de Kovalesky pour définir une topologie sur les images, nous étudierons particulièrement les graphes d'adjacence de régions et les cartes discrètes dans la perceptive de réduire la taille la taille de la structure tout en préservant le maximum de propriétés héritées de la topologie du support de l'image. L'utilisation des cartes discrètes sur des architectures parallèles est présentée. Nous montrons que le graphe d'adjacence de régions n'est pas très adapté au parallélisme car le maintien de la cohérence des informations entre les processeurs est coûteux à réaliser tandis que l'utilisation du graphe dual, cependant légèrement modifié, est bien adaptée. Ce travail a été ensuite ouvert sur la construction de hiérarchies de graphes par fusion de régions et sur l'appariement partiel de ces hiérarchies. Un domaine différent est ensuite abordé : la généralisation de la déformation de courbes discrètes à des supports irréguliers en 2D, ainsi que la mise en évidence des difficultés de généralisation en 3D. Enfin une synthèse est présentée sur une ouverture possible des graphes d'adjacence de régions, qui n'ont qu'un seul type d'arête mais ont une représentation hiérarchique, vers les graphes sémantiques, qui ont plusieurs types d'arêtes mais n'ont pas de représentation hiérarchique

En effet, ces tâches sont complexes et restent limitées par différents facteurs tels que la nécessité d'utiliser un paramétrage, l'influence de l'arrière-plan ou la superposition d'objets. Nous proposons ici des méthodes dérivées de la topologie algébrique qui diffèrent des méthodes classiques de traitement d'images par l'intégration d'informations locales vers des échelles globales grâce à des invariants topologiques. Une première méthode de segmentation d'images a été développée en ajoutant aux caractéristiques statistiques classiques d'autres de nature topologique calculées par homologie persistante. Une autre méthode basée sur des complexes topologiques a été développée dans le but de segmenter les objets dans des images 2D et 3D. Cette méthode segmente des objets dans des images multidimensionnelles et fournit une réponse à certains problèmes habituels en restant robuste vis à vis du bruit et de la variabilité de l'arrière-plan. Son application aux images de grande taille peut se faire en utilisant des superpixels. Nous avons également montré que l'homologie relative détecte le mouvement d'objets dans une séquence d'images qui apparaissent et disparaissent du début à la fin. Enfin, nous posons les bases d'un ensemble de méthodes d'analyse d'images basé sur la théorie des faisceaux qui permet de fusionner des données locales en un ensemble cohérent. De plus, nous proposons une seconde approche qui permet de comprendre et d'interpréter la structure d'une image en utilisant les invariants fournis par la cohomologie des faisceaux.

Book excerpt: Partial differential equations and variational methods were introduced into image processing about 15 years ago, and intensive research has been carried out since then. The main goal of this work is to present the variety of image analysis applications and the precise mathematics involved. It is intended for two audiences. The first is the mathematical community, to show the contribution of mathematics to this domain and to highlight some unresolved theoretical questions. The second is the computer vision community, to present a clear, self-contained, and global overview of the mathematics involved in image processing problems. The book is divided into five main parts. Chapter 1 is a detailed overview. Chapter 2 describes and illustrates most of the mathematical notions found throughout the work. Chapters 3 and 4 examine how PDEs and variational methods can be successfully applied in image restoration and segmentation processes. Chapter 5, which is more applied, describes some challenging computer vision problems, such as sequence analysis or classification. This book will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematics and computer vision.
