Book excerpt: Notre étude vise une application très prometteuse des rubans supraconducteurs déposés à base d’YBaCuO pour la limitation du courant de défaut. L’objectif principal de ce travail est de définir un conducteur adapté et de trouver les paramètres importants améliorant l’homogénéité de sa transition. Pour celà, des mesures électriques, ainsi qu’un montage de mesure optique nouveau sont présentés, notamment pour étudier l’apparition de points chauds sur le conducteur aux premiers temps de la transition. Trois conducteurs déposés commerciaux différents sont étudiés (EHTS, AMSC et Super Power), en limitation. Parmi eux, l’architecture du conducteur AMSC est très prometteuse pour l’application visée. Enfin, des études théoriques de modélisation et de simulation ainsi que des études d’application au réseau réel sont exposées. Elles valident l’utilisation des conducteurs déposés pour limiter le courant de défaut.

Book excerpt: Les travaux de recherche présentés dans cette thèse constituent une contribution à la modélisation et à la caractérisation expérimentale de supraconducteurs à haute température critique (HTC) en vue d'une meilleure intégration dans les machines électriques. Les travaux ont été menés sur deux axes complémentaires : - Développement d'approches de modélisation permettant le calcul des grandeurs électromagnétiques dans les supraconducteurs HTC sous champ propre ou à proximité d'autres sources, et, notamment en présence de pièces ferromagnétiques à perméabilité magnétique linéaire et non linéaire. Un intérêt particulier est porté aux méthodes intégrales qui présentent plusieurs avantages pour la modélisation de tels systèmes. Les résultats obtenus ont été validés par des comparaisons aux mesures et à des calculs numériques par la méthode des éléments finis. - Caractérisation expérimentale de ces matériaux afin de déterminer le courant critique en courant continu (DC) et les pertes dissipées en courant alternatif (AC). L'étude va de l'élément de base (rubans supraconducteurs) au système (machine électrique), montrant les difficultés rencontrées dans une telle caractérisation. Un prototype de machine synchrone à induit supraconducteur a également été réalisé et testé. Les premiers résultats de mesure obtenus sont présentés et validés par modélisation.

Ce dernier peut être très conséquent, ce qui est incompatible avec les problèmes de dimensionnement et d'optimisation. Dans ce contexte, ce travail a pour objectif de développer des approches de modélisation multiphysique rapides pour le dimensionnement et l'optimisation des systèmes à base de supraconducteurs. Un intérêt particulier est porté pour les méthodes intégrales. Les verrous scientifiques à lever, qui constituent également l'originalité du travail, résident dans l'intégration des lois de comportement E(J) des supraconducteurs dans les schémas numériques de ce type de méthodes. Dans ce travail on développe un modèle numérique afin d'étudier la distribution de la densité de courant et d'estimer les pertes AC dans les supraconducteurs à haute température (HTS). Le modèle développé est basé sur une formulation intégro-différentielle en termes de potentiel vecteur électrique dans les deux domaines fréquentiel et temporel. Une campagne de test est menée afin de valider et de bien cerner les possibilités offertes et les limites de cette approche pour la modélisation des supraconducteurs.

It is assumed that the student is familiar with the laws of thermodynamics and has taken a course in basic circuit analysis, including the application of phasors. We begin with a discussion of how humankind has successfully harnessed the energy of wind, water, the sun, biomass, animals, geothermal sources, fossils, and nuclear fission to make its life comfortable. Some of the consequences of this activity on the environment are examined. In Chapter 2, we review the basic physics of energy and its conversion.
