Book excerpt: Grâce à leurs excellentes performances mécaniques, l'intérêt des composites à fibres de carbone n'a pas cessé de croître ces dernières décennies. Cependant, le développement à grande échelle de ces matériaux passe par une amélioration des procédés utilisés pendant les différentes étapes du cycle de vie (élaboration, formage, assemblage, contrôle, recyclage). À différents stades du cycle de vie du matériau, les méthodes de Contrôle Non Destructif (CND) permettent de caractériser l'état d'intégrité du matériau. Elles jouent un rôle indispensable dans le contrôle de la qualité et dans la gestion des risques. Le CND par thermographie inductive, basé sur les mesures de l'effet thermique des courants de Foucault dans le matériau, est une technique prometteuse pour ce type de matériau. Le développement de cette méthode et la conception de dispositifs nécessitent un outil de simulation multiphysique électromagnétique et thermique. Le développement d'un tel modèle se heurte aux problématiques de l'évaluation des courants induits dans des régions minces et fortement anisotropes. Les outils de simulation développés durant cette thèse permettent d'avoir des temps de calcul raisonnables tout en conservant des précisions acceptables sur les solutions numériques. Ces outils ont été validés par des comparaisons avec des essais expérimentaux et permettent ainsi d'évaluer précisément les performances de cette technique de CND.

Book excerpt: Le travail présenté dans cette thèse constitue une contribution à la modélisation numérique tridimensionnelle simplifiée, de l’interaction d’un champ électromagnétique avec une structure en matériau composite stratifié à fibres de carbone (CFRPs), avec comme principale application l’évaluation non destructive par courants de Foucault. Dans un premier temps, et dans les limites où les effets capacitifs peuvent être négligés, nous avons développé un modèle basé sur une formulation intégro-différentielle, en potentiel vecteur électrique, pour des calculs rapides de la réponse d’un capteur à courants de Foucault et des courants induits dans les CFRPs. Ce modèle tient compte naturellement des conservations du courant électrique et du flux magnétique, et permet de limiter le domaine d’étude aux parties actives du système modélisé. Ces dernières sont discrétisées séparément ; les aspects multi-échelles et les mouvements sont donc traités plus facilement. D’autre part, compte tenu des structures en couches minces des CFRPs, et sous certaines conditions, ce modèle se réduit à un cas quasi-bidimensionnel n’impliquant que la composante normale du potentiel vecteur électrique, réduisant ainsi considérablement la taille du système à résoudre et le temps de calcul. Dans un second temps, nous avons proposé une approche de caractérisation du tenseur de conductivité des CFRPs, en introduisant une structure de capteur à courant de Foucault tournant de forme rectangulaire. Nous avons développé un modèle analytique liant directement les composantes du tenseur de conductivité d’un pli en CFRP aux impédances du capteur rectangulaire tournant, correspondant à ses positions parallèle et transversale aux fibres. Cette approche a été validée expérimentalement.

Book excerpt: We propose in this thesis several approaches for improving the multiscale modeling and simulation of composites' behavior. Accurate and reliable modeling of the mechanical response of composite materials remains a major challenge. The objective of this work is to develop simplified methodologies based on existing homogenization techniques (numerical and analytical) for efficient prediction of nonlinear behavior of these materials. First choice has been focused on the Mean-field homogenization methods to study the elasto-plastic behavior and ductile damage phenomena in composites. Although restrictive, these techniques remain the best in terms of computational cost and efficiency. Two methods were investigated for this purpose: the Incremental Scheme Micromechanics (IMS) in One-site modeling and the Mori-Tanaka model in multi-site modeling (MTMS). In the framework of elastoplasticity, we have shown and validated by finite element method that the IMS homogenization results are more accurate, when dealing with high volume fraction composites, than the Mori-Tanaka model, frequently used in the literature. Furthermore, we have extended the Mori-Tanaka's model (MT) generally formulated in One-site to the multi-site formulation for the study of elasto-plastic behavior of composites with ordered microstructure. This approach shows that the multi-site formulation produces consistent results with respect to finite element and experimental solutions. In the continuation of our research, the Lemaître-Chaboche ductile damage model has been included to the study of elasto-plastic behavior in composite through the IMS homogenization. This latest investigation demonstrates the capability of the IMS model to capture damage effects in the material. However, the issue on the loss of ellipticity was not addressed. Finally we develop a numerical homogenization tool based on computational homogenization. This novel numerical tool works with 2D and 3D structure and is fully integrated in the conventional finite element code ABAQUS through its subroutine UMAT. The (FE2) method offers the advantage of being extremely accurate and allows the handling of more complex physics and geometrical nonlinearities. Linear and non-linear cases were studied. In addition, its combination with ABAQUS allows the use of major resources provided by this software (a panel of toolbox for various mechanical, thermomechanical and electrical analysis) for the study of multi-physics problems. This work was validated in the linear case on a two-scale analysis in bending and compared to the multi-scale method ANM (Nezamabadi et al. (2009)). Extensive work will be needed later with applications on non-linear problems to highlight the value of the developed tool.

Impaired bone remodeling affects not only the trabecular compartment but also the cortical one. Despite the crucial contribution of the cortical structure to the whole bone mechanical competence, cortical bone was understudied for a long time. A paradigm shift occurred around 2010, with a special focus placed on the importance of cortical bone. This has sparkled a great deal of interest in new ultrasound techniques to assess cortical bone. While our book ‘Bone Quantitative Ultrasound’ published in 2011 emphasized techniques to measure trabecular bone, this new book is devoted for a large part to the technologies introduced recently to measure cortical bone. These include resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, guided waves, scattering, and pulse-echo and tomography imaging techniques. Instrumentation, signal processing techniques and models used are detailed. Importantly, the data accumulated in recent years such as anisotropic stiffness, elastic engineering moduli, compression and shear wave speeds of cortical bones from various skeletal sites are presented comprehensively. A few chapters deal with the recent developments achieved in quantitative ultrasound of trabecular bone. These include (i) scattering-based approaches and their application to measure skeletal sites such as the spine and proximal femur and (ii) approaches exploiting the poro-elastic nature of bone. While bone fragility and osteoporosis are still the main motivation for developing bone QUS, this Book also includes chapters reporting ultrasound techniques developed for other applications of high interest such as 3-D imaging of the spine, assessment of implant stability and transcranial brain imaging. Book excerpt: This superb text describes a novel and powerful method for allowing design engineers to firstly model a linear problem in heat conduction, then build a solution in an explicit form and finally obtain a numerical solution. It constitutes a modelling and calculation tool based on a very efficient and systemic methodological approach. Solving the heat equations through integral transforms does not constitute a new subject. However, finding a solution generally constitutes only one part of the problem. In design problems, an initial thermal design has to be tested through the calculation of the temperature or flux field, followed by an analysis of this field in terms of constraints. A modified design is then proposed, followed by a new thermal field calculation, and so on until the right design is found. The thermal quadrupole method allows this often painful iterative procedure to be removed by allowing only one calculation. The chapters in this book increase in complexity from a rapid presentation of the method for one dimensional transient problems in chapter one, to non uniform boundary conditions or inhomogeneous media in chapter six. In addition, a wide range of corrected problems of contemporary interest are presented mainly in chapters three and six with their numerical implementation in MATLAB (r) language. This book covers the whole scope of linear problems and presents a wide range of concrete issues of contemporary interest such as harmonic excitations of buildings, transfer in composite media, thermal contact resistance and moving material heat transfer. Extensions of this method to coupled transfers in a semi-transparent medium and to mass transfer in porous media are considered respectively in chapters seven and eight. Chapter nine is devoted to practical numerical methods that can be used to inverse the Laplace transform. Written from an engineering perspective, with applications to real engineering problems, this book will be of significant interest not only to researchers, lecturers and graduate students in mechanical engineering (thermodynamics) and process engineers needing to model a heat transfer problem to obtain optimized operating conditions, but also to researchers interested in the simulation or design of experiments where heat transfer play a significant role.
