Book excerpt: DANS LE DOMAINE DE LA CONCEPTION DES CIRCUITS ET DES SYSTEMES MICROONDES, LE RECOURS A LA C.A.O. EST UNE ETAPE INCONTOURNABLE. CEPENDANT, LA PRISE EN COMPTE DES DIFFERENTES INTERACTIONS, LORS DE LA CONCEPTION, NECESSITE LA MISE EN UVRE DE SUPPORTS DE DESCRIPTION BASES SUR DE NOUVEAUX FORMALISMES. DANS LE PREMIER CHAPITRE, NOUS EXPOSONS LES METHODOLOGIES EXISTANTES DE CONCEPTION AINSI QUE LA PROBLEMATIQUE ASSOCIEE. LA SUITE DU CHAPITRE EST CONSACREE A LA PRESENTATION ET A L'ETUDE DES LANGAGES DE DESCRIPTION DES SYSTEMES ANALOGIQUES TEL QUE VHDL-A ET MHDL. DANS LE DEUXIEME CHAPITRE, DES SPECIFICATIONS D'UNE NOUVELLE APPROCHE POUR UN LANGAGE DE DESCRIPTION OPERANT SUR DES DOMAINES VARIES SONT PRESENTEES, CE LANGAGE EST BASE SUR L'UTILISATION D'UN MODELE GENERIQUE A PLUSIEURS DIMENSIONS. LES REGLES DE MISE EN INTERFACE ET DE CONNEXION ENTRE OBJETS AINSI QUE LE STOCKAGE DES DONNEES SONT EXPOSES EN DETAIL. LA SOLUTION RETENUE POUR LE STOCKAGE DES INFORMATIONS SOUS FORME D'OBJET EST INTERESSANTE. CONTRAIREMENT A LA METHODE TRADITIONNELLE, CETTE SOLUTION PERMET DE GARDER TOUTE L'INFORMATION DU MODELE ET FOURNIT UNE REPRESENTATION UNIQUE DE CELLE-CI. LE MODELE DE LA STRUCTURE ETANT BIEN DEFINI, L'UTILISATION D'UNE BASE DE DONNEES ORIENTEE OBJET EST DEVENUE RELATIVEMENT SIMPLE, ET REPRESENTE UN CHOIX APPROPRIE. DANS LE TROISIEME CHAPITRE, LES METHODES ET LES OUTILS INFORMATIQUES A METTRE EN UVRE POUR LA CONCEPTION DE L'ENVIRONNEMENT DE GESTION DES INFORMATIONS SONT EXPOSEES. LES METHODES DE CONCEPTION ORIENTEES OBJET SONT DETAILLEES. LE SYSTEME DE GESTION DE BASE DE DONNEES, EN PARTICULIER LE SYSTEME DE GESTION DES BASES DE DONNEES 02, EST EGALEMENT DEVELOPPE. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All current methods of secure communication such as public-key cryptography can eventually be broken by faster computing. At the interface of physics and computer science lies a powerful solution for secure communications: quantum cryptography. Because eavesdropping changes the physical nature of the information, users in a quantum exchange can easily detect eavesdroppers. This allows for totally secure random key distribution, a central requirement for use of the one-time pad. Since the one-time pad is theoretically proven to be undecipherable, quantum cryptography is the key to perfect secrecy. Quantum Communications and Cryptography is the first comprehensive review of the past, present, and potential developments in this dynamic field. Leading expert contributors from around the world discuss the scientific foundations, experimental and theoretical developments, and cutting-edge technical and engineering advances in quantum communications and cryptography. The book describes the engineering principles and practical implementations in a real-world metropolitan network as well as physical principles and experimental results of such technologies as entanglement swapping and quantum teleportation. It also offers the first detailed treatment of quantum information processing with continuous variables. Technologies include both free-space and fiber-based communications systems along with the necessary protocols and information processing approaches. Bridging the gap between physics and engineering, Quantum Communications and Cryptography supplies a springboard for further developments and breakthroughs in this rapidly growing area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists at War examines the ethical debates that severely tested the American scientific community during the Cold War. Sarah Bridger highlights the contributions of scientists to military technologies and strategic policymaking, from the dawning atomic age in the 1940s through the Strategic Defense Initiative (“Star Wars”) in the 1980s, which sparked a cross-generational opposition among scientists. The Manhattan Project in the early 1940s and the crisis provoked by the launch of Sputnik in 1957 greatly enhanced the political clout of American scientists. Yet many who took up government roles felt a duty to advocate arms control. Bridger investigates the internal debate over nuclear weapons policy during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations, when scientific advisors did not restrict themselves to technical assessments but made an impassioned moral case for a nuclear test ban. The relationship between government and science began to fray further during the Vietnam War, as younger scientists inside and outside of government questioned the morality of using chemical defoliants, napalm, and other non-nuclear weapons. With campuses erupting in protest over classified weapons research conducted in university labs, many elder statesmen of science, who once believed they could wield influence from within, became alienated. The result was a coalition that opposed “Star Wars” during the 1980s—and a diminished role for scientists as counselors to future presidents.

Book excerpt: The Second World War, with its emphasis on innovative weapons and defence technology, brought about massive changes in the role of scientists in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. Canadian scientists, working through the auspices of the National Research Council and the Department of National Defence, made important contributions to the development of alliance warfare. Before 1939, Canada had only a minute military establishment and a limited industrial and academic capacity for research and development. With the outbreak of war, all this changed dramatically. This book explains how and why Canada was able to play in the big leagues of military technology, including the development of radar, RDX explosives, proximity fuses, chemical and biological warfare, and the atomic bomb. It also investigates the evolution of the Canadian national security state, which attempted to protect defence secrets both from the Axis powers and from Canada's wartime ally, the Soviet Union. The Science of War provides both a cross-disciplinary overview of the scientific and military activity of this period in several countries and a fascinating analysis of what the author calls 'Big Science' in Canada.

Book excerpt: Interest in computer applications has led to a new attitude to applied logic in which researchers tailor a logic in the same way they define a computer language. In response to this attitude, this text for undergraduate and graduate students discusses major algorithmic methodologies, and tableaux and resolution methods. The authors focus on first-order logic, the use of proof theory, and the computer application of automated searches for proofs of mathematical propositions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tizard Mission was one of the key events in the forging of the Anglo-American alliance in World War II. Led by Sir Henry Tizard, the mission visited the United States and Canada in the summer of 1940 to make available virtually all of Britain's technical and scientific military secrets. Overwhelmed by British generosity, the U.S. reciprocated. David Zimmerman tells the story of that mission and examines the importance of technology in modern war and its crucial role in the defeat of the Axis powers.
