Ces deux étapes clefs lors de la réalisation d'un delta sigma à temps continu ont été intégrées à un flot de conception complet allant des spécifications à l'implémentation sur silicium. Finalement, ce flot de conception a été utilisé pour réaliser un modulateur delta sigma à temps continu en technologie CMOS065 pour une application WLAN.

Book excerpt: Ce travail est consacré à la conception automatisée des convertisseurs analogique-numérique sigma-delta passe-bande (PB) à temps continu (TC). Une étude générale sur la conversion sigma-delta pour les modulateurs passe-bas et passe-bande a d'abord été menée. La modélisation, la stabilité et l'évaluation de leurs performances y sont abordées. Différentes architectures déjà développées, ainsi que leurs caractéristiques, leurs avantages et leurs limites fonctionnelles sont ensuite succinctement présentées. La conception de modulateurs sigma-delta PB à TC est ensuite abordée. Une méthode utilisant l'invariance impulsionnelle pour transformer un modulateur à temps discret en un modulateur à temps continu a été développée. Elle a conduit à une procédure automatique implémentée sous Matlab. Ces transformations et modélisations permettent de simuler des architectures à TC en utilisant des outils de simulations plus rapides que les simulateurs analogiques. Une nouvelle méthode d'analyse et de synthèse des modulateurs sigma-delta PB à TC est présentée. Elle rend possible la synthèse de modulateurs sigma-delta ayant un retard supérieur à une période d'échantillonnage, pourvu qu'un bouclage soit ajouté à l'entrée du CAN. Nous avons montré que la résolution dépend du choix de son emplacement. Une série de simulations a été réalisée sur des modulateurs sigma-delta PB d'ordre 8, afin de valider la méthode générale. La faisabilité du modulateur est assurée en prenant en compte une éventuelle dispersion des composants. Ainsi, des valeurs de retard supérieures à la période d'échantillonnage peuvent maintenir une marge de gain du filtre de la boucle directe compatible, avec de bonnes performances. Dans cette analyse, la sensibilité de cette marge de gain par rapport aux variations du retard réelles est analysée. Toujours dans un souci de faisabilité, la sensibilité des performances par rapport à la dispersion sur le retard réel a été minimisée.

The diversity of the requirements in terms of speed and resolution, makes the design of a single low power analog to digital converter (ADC) suitable for all the scenarios very problematic. Reconfigurable ADCs are a solution to this problem, where resolution would be exchanged for bandwidth. Classical Delta Sigma ADCs offer an easy way to perform this exchange by adjusting their oversampling ratios. However, they are not suitable for wideband applications. Parallelizing Delta Sigma ADCs overcomes this problem and in addition, increases the reconfigurability of the ADC. In this work, a fully reconfigurable Time-interleaved Delta Sigma ADC is proposed. Its reconfigurability permits it to perform resolution-bandwidth trade-off as well as power consumptionbandwidth trade-off by adjusting the operation frequency, the number of active channels, the oversampling ratio and the modulator order. A novel interpolation technique is also proposed. It allows to downscale the capacitor sizes that may otherwise reach unreasonable values if large resolutions are required and relaxes the constraints on the anti-alias filter as well. A prototype of the presented Time-interleaved Delta Sigma ADC has been realized in a 1.2 V 65 nm CMOS technology. It was designed to fulfill the requirements of GSM, EDGE, UMTS, DVBT, WiFi and WiMax standards. For the GSM/EDGE scenario, a 80 dB SNR was measured. For the rest of scenarios, the performances were not secured but the functionality was tested successfully.
