Les problèmes liés à son utilisation justifient la mise en place de moyens d'essai spécifiques. Nous avons ainsi été amenés à mettre au point un banc d'essai turbocompresseurs permettant 1'établissement des cartes des performances de la machine et l'étude de l'écoulement dans les différentes stations caractéristiques. Ce banc d'essai ainsi que les moyens de mesures(pressions, températures,...) sont décrits. De plus ce banc permettra de réaliser les expériences spécifiques nécessaires à l'élaboration d'une modélisation des turbocompresseurs. L'intérêt que le motoriste porte à une telle étude ainsi que les schémas habituellement utilisés dans une approche de modélisation monodimensionnelle sont justifiés ensuite. Après avoir présenté l'état actuel de la recherche nous concernant est décrite la méthode de prédiction des performances de la turbine centripète proposée. A la suite de l'application de cette méthode de calcul est présenté le bilan comparatif des résultats numériques à ceux expérimentaux obtenus sur le banc d'essai. Enfin sont présentées quelques considérations sur l'extension possible de la méthode mise au point, et ce dans le but de résoudre le problème d'une mesure simple et rapide du taux de détente et du rendement de la turbine par l'utilisateur.

Through supercharging, the inlet air density is increased, usually by means of a compressor, and by doing so the amount of air trapped in the cylinders is increased accordingly. As a result, efficient burning of a proportionately higher amount of fuel is enabled. By far, the most successful version of supercharging is turbocharging. Here, the expansion in a turbine of the exhaust gases leaving the cylinders supplies the power needed to drive the compressor. At the moment, practically all diesel engines are turbocharged, with a continuously increasing penetration in the highly competitive market of SI-powered vehicles. The current book on turbochargers and turbocharging, comprising fifteen chapters, gathers important and novel research on many modern aspects of turbocharging for all kinds of gasoline and diesel-powered engine applications (automotive, truck, marine and aircraft). For example, characterisation of the value proposition of turbocharged vehicles, marine engines turbo-compounding, fundamental issues of turbocharger lag and its relation with engine-out PM emissions, variable geometric compressors, automotive two-stage turbocharging, and dynamic operation of turbochargers including VGT and surging effects are amongst the topics analysed. Review papers form a very important part of the book, namely the discussion and in-depth analysis of various automotive boosting systems, turbocharger reduced-order modeling, heat transfer and pulsating flows in turbomachinery, mathematical models for turbocharged engines, and turbomachine-based engine throttling. La zone de fonctionnement à bas régime du turbocompresseur est mal connue bien qu’elle représente l’utilisation urbaine d'un véhicule. Afin de progresser sur la connaissance des performances des turbocompresseurs aux bas régimes de rotation, un banc d'essai original de turbocompresseurs a été mis au point. Equipé d’un couplemètre et d’un système magnétique de contrôle de l’effort axial, il permet de tracer le champ compresseur à bas régime et de mesurer les pertes par frottements en conditions adiabatiques. Les mesures réalisées ont permis de mettre en évidence l’influence de la vitesse de rotation, de la température et de la pression d’alimentation d’huile et de l’effort axial sur la butée. Les paliers lisses et la butée hydrodynamiques ont également été modélisés. Après avoir montré l’impossibilité d’utiliser des méthodes simples et isotherme, l’équation de Reynolds est résolue simultanément avec l’équation de l’énergie sur des géométries très simplifiées de palier et de butée. Une modélisation similaire est également réalisée avec le logiciel Fluent. Cette modélisation est améliorée pour le palier pour prendre en compte la complexité de la géométrie comprenant la gorge d’alimentation, les quatre orifices, la convection dans les films d’huile intérieur et extrérieur et la conduction dans le coussinet. Enfin une comparaison des résultats est effectuée. Les différentes méthodes de mesures donnent des résultats comparables et qui corrèlent avec les résultats de calculs.

Book excerpt: This book presents a three-dimensional analysis of acoustic wave propagation in an elliptical waveguide, and applies the equations and concepts to design axially short elliptical end-chamber muffler configurations which are an important component of a complex multi-pass muffler used in a modern-day automotive exhaust system. A general solution of the Helmholtz equation in elliptical cylindrical co-ordinates is presented in terms of the Mathieu and modified Mathieu modal functions. This is followed by the tabulation and analysis, for the first time, of the non-dimensional resonance frequencies of the transverse modes of a rigid-wall elliptical waveguide for a complete range of aspect ratio. The modal shape patterns of the first few circumferential, radial and cross-modes are examined with particular attention to the pressure nodal ellipses and hyperbolae. An analytical formulation is then outlined for characterizing a single-inlet and single-outlet elliptical muffler with the inlet located on the end face and the outlet located either on the end face or side-surface. The ensuing chapter is devoted toward analyzing the Transmission Loss (TL) performance of different short end-chamber mufflers, namely (a) the straight-flow configuration having ports located on the opposite face, (b) the flow-reversal configuration with ports located on the same end face and (c) configuration with inlet port on the end face and outlet on the side surface. Design guidelines are formulated in terms of the optimal location of inlet and outlet ports which suppresses the deteriorating influence of certain higher-order modes, thereby delivering a broadband TL performance. Directions for future work are discussed toward the end. In summary, this book is a one-stop solution for a practicing automotive engineer designing mufflers, for an applied mathematician studying wave propagation in elliptical geometries, and also as a niche area within noise control engineering.
