Book excerpt: Nos últimos tempos vem ocorrendo uma variedade de negociações entre instituições, tais como fusões, aquisições e privatizações. Em todas elas há um elemento comum, base para a análise e agente motivador da tese. O ponto central do trabalho é a proposição de um modelo aleatório de avaliação patrimonial que permita determinar o valor da empresa em condições de risco e definir critérios metodológicos para a quantificação das variáveis utilizadas no processo avaliatório. O modelo proposto estuda o efeito da aleatoriedade sobre o binômio lucro-patrimônio líquido e suas consequências sobre o valor da empresa utilizando para tanto informações oriundas dos demonstrativos contábeis associadas ao custo do capital próprio. A avaliação decorrente, devido às características aleatórias do modelo, conduz a um valor médio e a um desvio-padrão definindo um intervalo de valores e não um valor único, enriquecendo o processo de avaliação. Para atingir o valor das empresas escolhidas desenvolve-se um estudo exploratório que busca investigar a metodologia adequada de valuation, através da pesquisa das formas teórico-práticas de quantificação das variáveis utilizadas no processo de formação de valor. Os resultados do trabalho traduzem uma visão moderna de avaliar empresas pela intensa interdisciplinaridade do processo avaliatório, pelas características aleatórias intrínsecas ao processo e pelos procedimentos criativos de investigação.

Notadamente, são raros os modelos de avaliação de risco de crédito que agregue a variável ambiental, quer por não fazerem parte do escopo da metodologia, quer pelo método não ser transparente quanto à metodologia. Este trabalho pretende contribuir para o desenvolvimento de um modelo de avaliação de risco de crédito agregando a variável ambiental. Desta forma, este trabalho foi embasado em uma metodologia exploratória, cuja técnica foi essencialmente de levantamento bibliográfico, com o principal intuito de apresentar a forma de mensuração e identificação dos riscos mais freqüentes, sob a ótica da concessão de crédito. Foram abordados aspectos de política financeira, de direito ambiental e da legislação brasileira, assim como a análise de alguns índices de eco-eficiência e ambientais. Por fim, com base em alguns sistemas de classificação de risco, foi apresentada uma contribuição ao modelo de avaliação de risco agregando a variável ambiental.

While environmental or political risk assessment has become an explicit function in many firms and is inherent in all foreign investment, the uncertainties of foreign political environments continue to pose critical problems for managers. In Managing Political Risk Assessment, Stephen J. Kobrin describes and analyzes the techniques of political risk assessment employed by U.S. multinationals. His analysis draws on organizational theory, economics, political science, and international relations. The study reveals that those charged with political risk assessment have often not been fully integrated into the core of the managerial process, information from subsidiaries is often biased, and the flow of data is poorly controlled. As a result, virtually all firms experience difficulties in using environmental assessment in planning and making decisions. Kobrin persuasively argues that the thorough integration of the assessment function into the managerial process is a necessary step, as the need for political risk assessment intensifies with the increased interaction between international business and its social and political surroundings. In this paper, we consider the theory and evidence on valuation approaches. We begin by surveying the literature on discounted cash flow valuation models, ranging from the first mentions of the dividend discount model to value stocks to the use of excess return models in more recent years. In the second part of the paper, we examine relative valuation models and, in particular, the use of multiples and comparables in valuation and evaluate whether relative valuation models yield more or less precise estimates of value than discounted cash flow models. In the final part of the paper, we set the stage for further research in valuation by noting the estimation challenges we face as companies globalize and become exposed to risk in multiple countries.

As such, the material and psychosocial conditions in which we work have immense consequences for our physical and mental wellbeing, as well as the distribution of health across the population. Recessions, job-loss, insecurity and unemployment also have important ramifications for the health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. Chronic illness is itself a significant cause of worklessness and low pay. Drawing on examples from different countries, this book shows that the relationship between work, worklessness and health varies by country. Countries with a more regulated work environment and a more interventionist and supportive welfare system have better health and smaller work-related health inequalities. The book provides examples of specific policies and interventions that mitigate the ill-health effects of work and worklessness. It concludes by asserting the importance of politics and policy choices in the aetiology of health and health inequalities.
