Book Synopsis The Woolly Monkey by : Thomas R. Defler
Download or read book The Woolly Monkey written by Thomas R. Defler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woolly monkeys are large, attractive and widespread primates found throughout many parts of the Amazon basin. It is only in the last twenty-five years or so that long-term studies of woollies in their forest habitat have been successful; they have not generally been successfully kept in captivity. But now, especially because of their size, these creatures are pressed on all sides by bush meat hunters and forest fragmentation. Their future is becoming critically precarious and the editors feel that it is time to showcase these animals with a full book. The editors draw together a number of recent woolly monkey studies from three Amazonian countries, including five taxa of woolly monkeys, four of which have recently been reclassified without using new biological criteria as species rather than subspecies (Groves, 2001, 2005; Rylands & Mittermeier, 2009). This volume provides a diversity of studies by well-known researchers and advanced students on a wide range of subjects using newly generated data, including a criticism of the recent taxonomic changes. The varied information contained within The Woolly Monkey: Behavior, Ecology, Systematics and Captive Research will help readers understand these handsome animals and will, we hope, energize them to contribute to their conservation.

Book Synopsis Microbial Interaction with Banana: Mechanisms, Symbiosis, and Integrated Diseases Control by : Huigang Hu
Download or read book Microbial Interaction with Banana: Mechanisms, Symbiosis, and Integrated Diseases Control written by Huigang Hu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Banana is one of the most important fruits worldwide and a staple food for millions of people in developing countries. However, vegetative propagation of commercial cultivars results in a limited genetic background, making banana plants susceptible to disease infection. Conventional chemical control is typically inefficient, owing to the plant's inability to absorb significant quantities of chemicals in a short period of time. The overuse leads to chemical reagent resistance and a rise in environmental contamination. Furthermore, the inappropriate chemical application might result in a relatively high quantity of residues on banana fruits, posing human health risks through consumption. As a result, new technology and discoveries for integrated banana plant protection are urgently required.

Book Synopsis Intellectual Property Rights in Agricultural Biotechnology by : Frederic H. Erbisch
Download or read book Intellectual Property Rights in Agricultural Biotechnology written by Frederic H. Erbisch and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last twenty years, biotechnology has revolutionized agricultural research. The enormous potential, together with a landmark decision by the US Supreme Court to allow the patenting of genetically-engineered organisms, has encouraged the private sector to invest heavily in research, resulting in the rapid growth of a multi-million dollar industry. These changes have influenced the way in which information and materials are exchanged and combined with developments in global agricultural research have resulted in a worldwide need for scientists to be educated in the implications of intellectual property rights. This book presents definitive information on intellectual property law in a simplified form (with a minimum of legal jargon) not available in other texts on the subject. The first section begins with an introductory chapter and goes on to consider diverse issues including protection, transference and capacity building, both at the national and institutional level. The second section consists of eleven country and regional case studies from around the world which track the international variation in intellectual property law and its application to agricultural biotechnology. The presentation is intended for both scientists and policy makers in industrialized and developing nations.

Book Synopsis Glosario Del Banco Mundial by : World Bank
Download or read book Glosario Del Banco Mundial written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1996 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the World Bank has been revised and expanded by the Terminology Unit in the Languages Services Division of the World Bank in collaboration with the English, Spanish, and French Translation Sections. The Glossary is intended to assist the Bank's translators and interpreters, other Bank staff using French and Spanish in their work, and free-lance translator's and interpreters employed by the Bank. For this reason, the Glossary contains not only financial and economic terminology and terms relating to the Bank's procedures and practices, but also terms that frequently occur in Bank documents, and others for which the Bank has a preferred equivalent. Although many of these terms, relating to such fields as agriculture, education, energy, housing, law, technology, and transportation, could be found in other sources, they have been assembled here for ease of reference. A list of acronyms occurring frequently in Bank texts (the terms to which they refer being found in the Glossary) and a list of international, regional, and national organizations will be found at the end of the Glossary.
