Book excerpt: This book results from a symposium organized by Genesys Network, which took place on April 29th, 2015, in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. The organizers invited contributors to think about the concept of power in the context of the evolving international system, and what it implied for the study of the concept in IR academic field. Indeed, if the end of the Cold War was characterized by a "unipolar moment" as defined by Krauthammer in 1991, this period is starting to come to an end. While the United States remains arguably a global superpower, its position is more and more disputed by other actors. Likewise, new centers of power have emerged. Today's world is complex and transitional, characterized by both short- and long-term challenges; interactions among these powers remain to be apprehended and understood. In the last decade, we have also observed an economic and partially political shift or redistribution of power from the “West to the Rest” on the classical state power chessboard. The beginning of the 21st century thus constitutes an important challenge for the super- and emerging or resurgent powers. The new global state of affairs is characterized by conditions that are more complex than in the past. In these circumstances and in the face of these worldwide trends, the concept of power has evolved and the need to redefine or think the concept has become a necessity. The present book thus aims at presenting the diversity of views on the concept of power but also, perhaps more importantly, their complementarity.

Communicating concepts in a clear and concise manner, the book provides students with an abundance of high-interest features and pedagogical elements to help them learn. Aiming to maximize student understanding of the concrete world rather then IR theory, each chapter concludes with a case study of a contemporary situation so that students can apply what they've learned and a Changing Contours section that asks students to consider the future of a particular topic. With a large and helpful map program and extensive photos and illustrations, this is a consummately student-friendly text: students like this book, and because they do, they learn from it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 2.8 billion people globally, also known as the "Other Third" or "energy poor", have little or no access to beneficial energy that meets their needs for cooking, heating, water, sanitation, illumination, transportation, or basic mechanical power. This book uniquely integrates the hitherto segmented and fragmented approaches to the challenge of access to energy. It provides theoretical, philosophical and practical analysis of energy for the low energy (non-hydrocarbon based) Other Third of the world, and how the unmet needs of the energy poor might be satisfied. It comprehensively addresses the range of issues relating to energy justice and energy access for all, including affordable - sustainable energy technologies (ASETs). The book breaks new ground by crafting a unified and cohesive framework for analysis and action that explains the factual and socio-political phenomenon of the energy poor, and demonstrates why clean energy is a primary determinant of their human progress. This is a must-read for all scholars, students, professionals and policy makers working on energy policy, poverty, and sustainable energy technologies.

This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the panic that is a central affective register of our current international order. Fears of Somali pirates, "Gypsy" kidnappers, African warlords, Ebola, "Mexican meth," pimps, coyotes, gangs, climate refugees and more, structure the dark side of a metropolitan unconscious. These are terrors over things that (might) cross borders, threatening the sanctity of territoriality and capital. Inspired by scholarship challenging panics around human and sex trafficking, the contributors to this volume develop the umbrella category of the global moral panic. Embracing the challenge of grasping a phenomenon not previously regarded as cohering, they consider panics provoked by travel, passage, transgression; panics over bodies that move. Like panics over trafficking, the episodes narrated here ride and feed a field of common sense regarding crime, rights, and state power. Their logics of victims and villains nourish notions of the centrality of punishment, drawing from and feeding taxonomies of gender, race, and nation, solidifying the order craved by capital. They spotlight the coloniality of power, the ongoing salience of empire, the savior logics of rescue, and the profound sexism organizing hierarchies of bodies and places. Panic, this volume diagnoses, is a crucial, undertheorized facet of contemporary local-global relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects on the reasons for the decline of international cooperation in world politics and studies ways to restore legitimacy in the international order. It engages with the concept of legitimacy in international relations theories and practices to examine the discussions around power shifts, the decline of liberalism, demands for inclusive international architectures, and challenges to multilateralism, as well as established norms by leaders and nationalisms. It studies the impact of the post-COVID-19 world order on the nature of power in the international system and changes in normative concerns of security. The volume also interrogates political legitimacy through an area studies lens by examining the concept of legitimacy separately in the USA, Europe, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa. An important and timely text featuring contributions from eminent scholars, this book will be of use to students and researchers of modern history, political science, and international relations. It will also be of interest to think tanks and policy-making bodies concerned with international affairs and foreign policy.
