Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to investigate a non-contact real-time moving sensor measurement method, i.e., continuously scanning laser Doppler vibrometry (CSLDV), and its application to vibration-based structural damage detection. In a conventional vibration measurement method, a sensor is fixed at a location on a structure surface and measures response of the structure. The spatial resolution of a vibration shape (VS) of the structure obtained by the conventional measurement method is low due to the limited number of sensors that can be attached to the structure. However, in this research, the laser spot from CSLDV continuously moves over a structure surface along a prescribed scan trajectory and measures velocities along the scan trajectory. Since the laser spot continuously moves, the velocities measured by CSLDV include both time- and spatial-domain vibration information of the structure, and a VS of the structure can be obtained from spatial-domain information. Advantages of this measurement method is that a VS can be obtained in a short measurement time and the spatial resolution of the VS can be very dense. An in-house CSLDV system, including a single-point laser Doppler vibrometer, a scanner and a control unit, is built to measure out-of-plane velocities of a structure.

Book excerpt: The research effort in this thesis is devoted to develop techniques to accurately and rapidly identify the location, orientation, and magnitude of the defects by using structural health monitoring concepts that use Laser Doppler Vibrometer as a non-contact sensor with multi-point sensing capability. The first research area addresses the formulation and validation of an innovative Damage Measure that is based on the ratios of the strain energy distributions of the damaged and undamaged structure. The innovations include use of a single set of actuator/sensor pair to excite and detect the responses of a structure for low frequency vibrations as well as guided wave propagation studies. A second new capability is the estimation of the Damage Measure without requiring any knowledge of the undamaged baseline structure. This method is made possible because of the development of these new technologies: Spatial Decimation and Wavenumber/Frequency filtering. The third contribution is to develop analytical models for the structural dynamics of damaged structure and seek solutions that use perturbation methods to detect damage in a plate structure. The fourth contribution is the development of a comprehensive damage detection technique over a wide frequency dynamic range. The fifth topic of research involves automation in Structural Health Monitoring based on the comprehensive Damage Measure formulation. Under the control of software the Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer is used to acquire the low frequency vibration mode data for a coarse identification of all the suspect regions of damage using a threshold criterion on the Damage Measure. Each suspect region of damage is further investigated using the high frequency elastic wave propagation to clearly identify the location, orientation, and extent of the damage. The computer control of the Laser Doppler Vibrometer and a quantitative assessment of the damage provide the enabling technologies for the automation proof of concept. Finally the developed techniques of damage detection are successfully demonstrated on practical structures such as a turbine blade in the laboratory and an F-15 vertical tail in field maintenance conditions.

Traditionally, LDV uses one or more fixed beams to measure the vibrational velocity of specific points and orientations. In order to measure an angular velocity at least two laser beams are required. Instead, this research proposes to develop a Continuous Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (CSLDV)technique, based on a single laser beam continuously sweeping the area of interest using a scanning mirror. Linear scans allow the measurement of normal and angular velocity while circular scans allow the measurement of normal velocity and two angular velocities. The first part of the study analyzes the performance of rigid body models of both the short line and circular scans (

Book excerpt: The Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) optical instrument purchased under the DURIP grant is used for accurately measuring velocity (and displacement) of vibrating surfaces completely without contact. It is a complete, self-contained area vibration measurement and analysis system. The LDV automatically collects complete vibration data from up to thousands of individual points on a user-defined area. An important feature in scanning vibrometers is the ability to validate and improve the quality of measured data at every scan point. This overcomes problems caused by dark speckles and other unavoidable phenomena present in laser vibrometry. The system purchased is also equipped with Live and Fully Integrated Video Imaging. The equipment is particularly useful at higher frequencies (above Skit) where accelerometers become increasingly inaccurate due to their own dynamic characteristics and influences. A large number of applications that require measurements at very high frequencies and cannot be accomplished using accelerometers include piezoelectric transducers and exciters, NDE flaw detection, rotor blades, disk drive components and micro-sensors and actuators.

Book excerpt: The SEM Handbook of Experimental Structural Dynamics stands as a comprehensive overview and reference for its subject, applicable to workers in research, product design and manufacture, and practice. The Handbook is devoted primarily to the areas of structural mechanics served by the Society for Experimental Mechanics IMAC community, such as modal analysis, rotating machinery, structural health monitoring, shock and vibration, sensors and instrumentation, aeroelasticity, ground testing, finite element techniques, model updating, sensitivity analysis, verification and validation, experimental dynamics sub-structuring, quantification of margin and uncertainty, and testing of civil infrastructure. Chapters offer comprehensive, detailed coverage of decades of scientific and technologic advance and all demonstrate an experimental perspective. Several sections specifically discuss the various types of experimental testing and common practices utilized in the automotive, aerospace, and civil structures industries. · History of Experimental Structural Mechanics · DIC Methods - Dynamic Photogrammetry · LDV Methods · Applied Digital Signal Processing · Introduction to Spectral - Basic Measurements · Structural Measurements - FRF · Random and Shock Testing · Rotating System Analysis Methods * · Sensors Signal Conditioning Instrumentation · Design of Modal Tests · Experimental Modal Methods · Experimental Modal Parameter Evaluation · Operating Modal Analysis Methods * · Analytical Numerical Substructuring · Finite Element Model Correlation · Model Updating · Damping of Materials and Structures · Model Calibration and Validation in Structures* · Uncertainty Quantification: UQ, QMU and Statistics * · Nonlinear System Analysis Methods (Experimental) · Structural Health Monitoring and Damage Detection · Experimental Substructure Modeling · Modal Modeling · Response (Impedance) Modeling · Nonlinear Normal Mode Analysis Techniques (Analytical) * · Modal Modeling with Nonlinear Connection Elements (Analytical) · Acoustics of Structural Systems (VibroAcoustics) * · Automotive Structural Testing * · Civil Structural Testing · Aerospace Perspective for Modeling and Validation · Sports Equipment Testing * · Applied Math for Experimental Structural Mechanics * Chapter Forthcoming Contributions present important theory behind relevant experimental methods as well as application and technology. Topical authors emphasize and dissect proven methods and offer detail beyond a simple review of the literature. Additionally, chapters cover practical needs of scientists and engineers who are new to the field. In most cases, neither the pertinent theory nor, in particular, the practical issues have been presented formally in current academic textbooks. Each chapter in the Handbook represents a ’must read’ for someone new to the subject or for someone returning to the field after an absence. Reference lists in each chapter consist of the seminal papers in the literature. This Handbook stands in parallel to the SEM Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics, where this Handbook focuses on experimental dynamics of structures at a macro-scale often involving multiple components and materials where the SEM Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics focuses on experimental mechanics of materials at a nano-scale and/or micro-scale.

Book excerpt: This research is to develop new techniques in experimental structural dynamics that use a Laser Doppler Vibrometer (LDV) to measure structural vibration. This report discusses use of a fixed laser vibrometer for vibration control experiments and for vibration testing. The laser vibrometer measures velocity directly with a small time and phase delay. Thus use of the laser as a sensor can improve performance of a control system for vibration suppression. Furthermore, the laser can be moved over the surface of the structure to measure the vibration of many points. Experiments are being performed using the laser to measure vibration, and piezoceramic patch actuators to suppress vibration. Laser reflection is being investigated as a new way to study the vibration response of structures. This technique is a very simple way to study vibration and control of structures by mapping the operational deflections onto simple line patterns. The laser is also being used to measure vibration through the glass door of a vacuum oven. The project is to study the effect of high temperatures on piezoceramic materials, structural adhesives, and structural damping treatments. The laser can measure vibration on high temperature surfaces where other sensors would fail.
