Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topological Dynamics has its roots deep in the theory of differential equations, specifically in that portion called the "qualitative theory". The most notable early work was that of Poincare and Bendixson, regarding stability of solutions of differential equations, and the subject has grown around this nucleus. It has developed now to a point where it is fully capable of standing on its own feet as a branch of Mathematics studied for its intrinsic interest and beauty, and since the publication of Topological Dynamics by Gottschalk and Hedlund, it has been the subject of widespread study in its own right, as well as for the light it sheds on differential equations. The Bibliography for Topological Dyna mics by Gottschalk contains 1634 entries in the 1969 edition, and progress in the field since then has been even more prodigious. The study of dynamical systems is an idealization of the physical studies bearing such names as aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, electrodynamics, etc. We begin with some space (call it X) and we imagine in this space some sort of idealized particles which change position as time passes.

Book Synopsis Stability and Transition in Shear Flows by : Peter J. Schmid
Download or read book Stability and Transition in Shear Flows written by Peter J. Schmid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-12-28 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed look at some of the more modern issues of hydrodynamic stability, including transient growth, eigenvalue spectra, secondary instability. It presents analytical results and numerical simulations, linear and selected nonlinear stability methods. By including classical results as well as recent developments in the field of hydrodynamic stability and transition, the book can be used as a textbook for an introductory, graduate-level course in stability theory or for a special-topics fluids course. It is equally of value as a reference for researchers in the field of hydrodynamic stability theory or with an interest in recent developments in fluid dynamics. Stability theory has seen a rapid development over the past decade, this book includes such new developments as direct numerical simulations of transition to turbulence and linear analysis based on the initial-value problem.
Book Synopsis Photochemical Processes In Continuous-flow Reactors: From Engineering Principles To Chemical Applications by : Noel Timothy
Download or read book Photochemical Processes In Continuous-flow Reactors: From Engineering Principles To Chemical Applications written by Noel Timothy and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous-flow photochemistry is an expanding field within chemistry. It unites the mass transfer enhancement of flow chemistry with the high energy field density of microscale geometries. Moreover, it provides means to scale photochemical reactions efficiently. This book gives an overview of both technological and chemical aspects associated with photochemical processes in microreactors. It provides analysis, the first of its kind, of these new technologies developed within the field of photochemical processes, with a description and case studies of practical implementation. It specifically looks at: Design considerations of continuous-flow photoreactors;Detailed descriptions of photon and mass-transfer phenomena;Modeling approaches for photochemical transformations;Scale up strategies for photochemical transformations;Examples of continuous-flow photochemistry in organic synthetic chemistry and material science;Industrial examples of photochemical transformations. By providing a deeper understanding of underlying concepts, coupled with numerous examples, this book is an essential reference for chemistry students, researchers and professionals working on photochemistry, photoredox catalysis, flow chemistry, process chemistry and reactor engineering.
Book Synopsis Hölder Continuous Euler Flows in Three Dimensions with Compact Support in Time by : Philip Isett
Download or read book Hölder Continuous Euler Flows in Three Dimensions with Compact Support in Time written by Philip Isett and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-21 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivated by the theory of turbulence in fluids, the physicist and chemist Lars Onsager conjectured in 1949 that weak solutions to the incompressible Euler equations might fail to conserve energy if their spatial regularity was below 1/3-Hölder. In this book, Philip Isett uses the method of convex integration to achieve the best-known results regarding nonuniqueness of solutions and Onsager's conjecture. Focusing on the intuition behind the method, the ideas introduced now play a pivotal role in the ongoing study of weak solutions to fluid dynamics equations. The construction itself—an intricate algorithm with hidden symmetries—mixes together transport equations, algebra, the method of nonstationary phase, underdetermined partial differential equations (PDEs), and specially designed high-frequency waves built using nonlinear phase functions. The powerful "Main Lemma"—used here to construct nonzero solutions with compact support in time and to prove nonuniqueness of solutions to the initial value problem—has been extended to a broad range of applications that are surveyed in the appendix. Appropriate for students and researchers studying nonlinear PDEs, this book aims to be as robust as possible and pinpoints the main difficulties that presently stand in the way of a full solution to Onsager's conjecture.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Turbulent Flow by : Jean Mathieu
Download or read book An Introduction to Turbulent Flow written by Jean Mathieu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-06-26 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most natural and industrial flows are turbulent. The atmosphere and oceans, automobile and aircraft engines, all provide examples of this ubiquitous phenomenon. In recent years, turbulence has become a very lively area of scientific research and application, attracting many newcomers who need a basic introduction to the subject. An Introduction to Turbulent Flow, first published in 2000, offers a solid grounding in the subject of turbulence, developing both physical insight and the mathematical framework needed to express the theory. It begins with a review of the physical nature of turbulence, statistical tools, and space and time scales of turbulence. Basic theory is presented next, illustrated by examples of simple turbulent flows and developed through classical models of jets, wakes, and boundary layers. A deeper understanding of turbulence dynamics is provided by spectral analysis and its applications. The final chapter introduces the numerical simulation of turbulent flows. This well-balanced text will interest graduate students in engineering, applied mathematics, and the physical sciences.
