Book Synopsis Writing across Contexts by : Kathleen Yancey
Download or read book Writing across Contexts written by Kathleen Yancey and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing how composers transfer both knowledge about and practices of writing, Writing across Contexts explores the grounding theory behind a specific composition curriculum called Teaching for Transfer (TFT) and analyzes the efficacy of the approach. Finding that TFT courses aid students in transfer in ways that other kinds of composition courses do not, the authors demonstrate that the content of this curriculum, including its reflective practice, provides a unique set of resources for students to call on and repurpose for new writing tasks. The authors provide a brief historical review, give attention to current curricular efforts designed to promote such transfer, and develop new insights into the role of prior knowledge in students' ability to transfer writing knowledge and practice, presenting three models of how students respond to and use new knowledge—assemblage, remix, and critical incident. A timely and significant contribution to the field, Writing across Contexts will be of interest to graduate students, composition scholars, WAC and writing-in-the-disciplines scholars, and writing program administrators.
Book Synopsis Musical Composition in the Context of Globalization by : Christian Utz
Download or read book Musical Composition in the Context of Globalization written by Christian Utz and published by Transcript Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early transformation of European music practice and theory in the cultural centers of Asia, Latin America, and Africa around 1900, music history has to be conceived globally - a challenge that musicology has hardly faced yet. This book discusses the effects of cultural globalization on processes of composition and distribution of art music in the 20th and 21st centuries. Christian Utz provides the foundations of a global music historiography, building on new models such as transnationalism, entangled histories, and reflexive globalization. The relationship between music and broader changes in society is placed at the center of attention and considered a pivotal music-historical dynamic.
Book Synopsis Composing Research by : Cindy Johanek
Download or read book Composing Research written by Cindy Johanek and published by . This book was released on 2000-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cindy Johanek offers a new perspective on the ideological conflict between qualitative and quantitative research approaches, and the theories of knowledge that inform them. With a paradigm that is sensitive to the context of one's research questions, she argues, scholars can develop less dichotomous forms that invoke the strengths of both research traditions. Context-oriented approaches can lift the narrative from beneath the numbers in an experimental study, for example, or bring the useful clarity of numbers to an ethnographic study. A pragmatic scholar, Johanek moves easily across the boundaries that divide the field, and argues for contextualist theory as a lens through which to view composition research. This approach brings with it a new focus, she writes. "This new focus will call us to attend to the contexts in which rhetorical issues and research issues converge, producing varied forms, many voices, and new knowledge, indeed reconstructing a discipline that will be simultaneously focused on its tasks, its knowledge-makers, and its students." Composing Research is a work full of personal voice and professional commitment and will be a welcome addition to the research methods classroom and to the composition researcher's own bookshelf. 2000 Outstanding Scholarship Award from the International Writing Centers Association.

Book Synopsis In the Archives of Composition by : Lori Ostergaard
Download or read book In the Archives of Composition written by Lori Ostergaard and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2015-10-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Archives of Composition offers new and revisionary narratives of composition and rhetoric's history. It examines composition instruction and practice at secondary schools and normal colleges, the two institutions that trained the majority of U.S. composition teachers and students during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Drawing from a broad array of archival and documentary sources, the contributors provide accounts of writing instruction within contexts often overlooked by current historical scholarship. Topics range from the efforts of young women to attain rhetorical skills in an antebellum academy, to the self-reflections of Harvard University students on their writing skills in the 1890s, to a close reading of a high school girl's diary in the 1960s that offers a new perspective on curriculum debates of this period. Taken together, the chapters begin to recover how high school students, composition teachers, and English education programs responded to institutional and local influences, political movements, and pedagogical innovations over a one-hundred-and-thirty-year span.
Book Synopsis Software Composition by : Michel Baudry
Download or read book Software Composition written by Michel Baudry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-06-29 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of the International Conference on Software Composition is to advance the state of research on modularity and reuse in the context of software development based on components, services, features, or models. Software composition is becoming more and more important as innovation in software engineering shifts from the development of individual components to their reuse and recombination in novel ways. To this end, for the 2010 edition, researchers were solicited to contribute on topics such as component adaptation techniques, composition languages, modeling, as well as emerging composition techniques such as aspect-oriented programming, servi- oriented architectures, and mashups. In line with previous editions of SC, contri- tions were sought focusing on both theory and practice, with a particular interest in efforts relating them. This LNCS volume contains the proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Software Composition, which was held during July 1–2, 2010, as a collocated event of the TOOLS 2010 Federated Conferences, in Malaga, Spain.

Book Synopsis Writing and Learning from Context: Perceptions of Composition in First-year Learning Communities by : Paul Randall Walker

This book was released on 2007 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implications of these results focus on the necessity for exploiting the complexity of writing in transdisciplinary endeavors to demonstrate the multiple and influential factors that shape writing. The study concludes that if learning communities are viewed as individual contexts where all courses are developed from within rather than brought together, students and faculty are offered increased opportunity to trace writing's complexity through overt navigation of disciplinary strictures and individual expectations that exist in the learning community environment.

Book Synopsis Sounding Composition by : Stephanie Ceraso
Download or read book Sounding Composition written by Stephanie Ceraso and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sounding Composition Steph Ceraso reimagines listening education to account for twenty-first century sonic practices and experiences. Sonic technologies such as audio editing platforms and music software allow students to control sound in ways that were not always possible for the average listener. While digital technologies have presented new opportunities for teaching listening in relation to composing, they also have resulted in a limited understanding of how sound works in the world at large. Ceraso offers an expansive approach to sonic pedagogy through the concept of multimodal listening—a practice that involves developing an awareness of how sound shapes and is shaped by different contexts, material objects, and bodily, multisensory experiences. Through a mix of case studies and pedagogical materials, she demonstrates how multimodal listening enables students to become more savvy consumers and producers of sound in relation to composing digital media, and in their everyday lives.
