Book excerpt: A privileged chance to see Rose Uniacke's work in the form of a private tour of her London home-the crucible for all her design ideas-in her first book, produced as a limited edition of 2,500 copies. Airy and light, delicate and robust, grand and intimate, raw and luxurious: these are just some of the qualities and contradictions that resonate within the work and home of Rose Uniacke. This sumptuous volume, the first on the designer, has been conceived with Uniacke to her bespoke specifications. Masterfully photographed by François Halard, the book unfolds gatefold after gatefold as a series of privileged glimpses inside Uniacke's home, with the designer's own words as our guide-an intimate and exclusive portrait of a home rarely gained access to as well as a window onto the workings of one of our leading design minds. Her work is distinguished by warmth, character, and an extraordinary serenity, and mirroring these qualities the book is a luxury object made from some of the same materials featured in Uniacke's home: a unique cotton duck canvas slipcase houses the book itself, which is wrapped in pure new wool. Completing this indispensable book in design history are texts from the architect of Uniacke's home, Vincent Van Duysen, and her landscape architect, Tom Stuart-Smith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its eighteenth year, this unique showcase remains the most authoritative guide to contemporary domestic design. Covering the best and most innovative furniture, lighting, tableware, textiles, and products created over the past eighteen months by both well-known designers and new names from around the world, this year's striking selections have been made by the acclaimed New York–based furniture and product designer Karim Rashid. In a departure from the Yearbook's traditional format, objects are grouped thematically according to current global design trends: Futuretro, Nukitsch, Phenomena, Organic, Embellishment, Multiplicity, Minimum, and Techno. The book is richly illustrated in color throughout, and many images are accompanied by extended captions explaining their form, function, and innovations. Full technical data is given for each object, and a comprehensive reference section is included with designers' biographies and a list of suppliers' contact details. An introduction by Jennifer Hudson provides an insight into Karim Rashid's background, working practices, and design vision, while Rashid's own introduction explains the reasoning behind his selections as well as his transformation of the Yearbook's presentation to reflect the multiple directions of international design today.

Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, advanced educational opportunities were not clearly demarcated and defined. Author Amy J. Lueck demonstrates that public high schools, in addition to colleges and universities, were vital settings for advanced rhetoric and writing instruction. Lueck shows how the history of high schools in Louisville, Kentucky, connects with, contradicts, and complicates the accepted history of writing instruction and underscores the significance of high schools to rhetoric and composition history and the reform efforts in higher education today. Lueck explores Civil War- and Reconstruction-era challenges to the University of Louisville and nearby local high schools, their curricular transformations, and their fate in regard to national education reform efforts. These institutions reflect many of the educational trends and developments of the day: college and university building, the emergence of English education as the dominant curriculum for higher learning, student-centered pedagogies and educational theories, the development and transformation of normal schools, the introduction of manual education and its mutation into vocational education, and the extension of advanced education to women, African American, and working-class students. Lueck demonstrates a complex genealogy of interconnections among high schools, colleges, and universities that demands we rethink our categories and standards of assessment and our field’s history. A shift in our historical narrative would promote a move away from an emphasis on the preparation, transition, and movement of student writers from high school to college or university and instead allow a greater focus on the fostering of rich rhetorical practices and pedagogies at all educational levels. As the definition of college-level writing becomes increasingly contested once again, Lueck invites a reassessment of the discipline’s understanding of contemporary programs based in high schools like dual-credit and concurrent enrollment.

Book excerpt: - A collection of modern wabi-sabi projects from around the world, looking at how different designers have played with elements of the same style - A break from the traditional wabi-sabi style and a modern approach to design, redefining wabi-sabi for better reference, enjoyment and practicality - The book's layout is simple and clean, with transitional pages that incorporate elements of Japanese kusanshui and an overall color palette of earthy tones common to the wabi-sabi style - A foreword by Ukrainian designer Sergey Makhno on how the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi has inspired thinking about the meaning of life and led him on his own design journey In recent years, Japanese minimalism has become an emerging design force, and the essence of the Wabisabi aesthetic, the core of traditional Japanese aesthetics, is a simple beauty that can stand the test of time. Based on the concept of 'not stripping away its rhythm', designers have 'transformed' the traditional Wabi-sabi style to create a modern Wabi-sabi that is more in tune with modern aesthetic sensibilities. From the tennis player Maria Sharapova and American socialite Khloe Kardashian, to the domestic winner of the Asian Hotel Design Award, Wabi-sabi has become one of the hottest styles of the moment. This book features over 30 Wabi-sabi style projects from around the world, ranging from commercial spaces such as hotels, showrooms and restaurants to residences, and presents a comprehensive look at the use of Wabi-sabi elements in contemporary interior design. Many of the most influential designers in the wabi-sabi genre are featured, including those who have created their own wabi-sabi homes.
