Making sense of it all is not easy but of vital importance to retailing practitioners, analysts and policymakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides thirty cases from which to choose. Each of the cases is based on real situations-no armchaired situations exist. The cases are long enough to give adequate data for analysis but not so long so as to be cumbersome. The number and variety of cases, issues, types of operations, levels of sophistication, levels of management addressed, and so forth, assure that this book can be used at any level by any instructor who believes in and appreciates the value of case analysis as a teaching technique. Discussion Motivators are included in Appendix B. This component fills a market demand for increasing class interaction on topics which are difficult to cover in any other way. The book also contains numerous problems for practice, illustrations, and homework.

Book excerpt: The economic, social and environmental implications of recent changes in retailing constitute significant contemporary issues, which are the focus of this timely book. Retail change deals with the internationalization of retailing, the development of shopping centres in the city and at suburban sites, and the growth of leisure shopping. It provides an up-to-date review of the central questions faced by undergraduate students in planning, business studies and geography. The retail environment of developed economies has undergone revolutionary change since the 1970s, and the process is far from over. In the book the major elements central to contemporary retail change are developed across the whole spectrum of spatial scales relevant to present-day society. The first part adopts an economic perspective and focuses on the process of business concentration and its increasingly international orientation. This is followed by analyses of change in the urban region, concentrating on the emergence of the great variety of new retail forms associated with retail decentralization. The planning implications of retail change are developed in the third part. The future of the city-centre and other traditional shopping centres is examined in the light of challenges presented by new facilities. Alternative future scenarios contingent upon laisser-faire or interventionist government policy controls are also discussed. The social implications of retail change are developed in the final section. All students and researchers concerned with the evolution and development of the retail sector of advanced economies will welcome this book as an authoritative source of contemporary findings and commentary. Rosemary D. Bromley and Colin J. Thomas are Lecturers in Geography at the University College of Swansea, Wales.. This book is intended for undergraduate students taking courses in economic geography and retailing in departments of geography, business studies, planning, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European retailers have successfully internationalised their activities in Europe but have been less successful in North America. American retailers have been successful in their home market but less so in Europe. The major European and American retailers are now entering Asia and competing directly with each other in a substantive way fort he first time. These Western retailers, using modern managerial methods, are entering markets typified by more traditional managerial approaches. Western managerial cultures and values are interfacing with Asian ones. The results of these moves are new stresses for Asian retail structures that bring a new dynamism to Asian retailing. The contributions in this book explore the conflicts and benefits that arise as retailing in Asia becomes internationalised. The contributions are provided by experts in retail research from across Asia and for the first time in depth analyses are provided of the ways that Western retailers are provoking change in Asia. The book results form a seminar held at the University of Marketing and Distribution Sciences, Kobe, in November 2001 under the auspices of Society for Asian Research in Distribution. Scholars from across the region presented research results of their analyses of the New Commerce now appearing in Asia.

Book excerpt: Most of us think we know something about retailing: we shop, we buy, we consume. But retailing, perhaps more than any other economic sector, has been transformed fundamentally over the last thirty years, both economically and culturally. Featuring work from seminal theorists in the area and charting the development of retailing as an important discipline in its own right, this superb volume examines the key themes in contemporary retailing. Organized into five sections, each of which includes an illuminating editorial overview, The Retailing Reader examines: consumers and shoppers retail branding and marketing merchandising and buying; strategy, power and policy international retailing. Extensive case studies include an analysis of the British grocery market, the strategies embodied by Nike Town stores, and the development of retail economies in China and Latin America. The Retailing Reader presents a comprehensive overview of this important area of study, and is an ideal companion for any student of retailing, marketing or business and management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout modern history, retailers have opened their doors to consumers, providing them with goods and services that satisfy both rational and emotional needs. They do this by evoking a customer's sensory system, to create memorable experiences that will entice shoppers to visit again and again. Starting with a brief overview of the history of retail, market research, site selection and retail typology are then discussed. The differences between on-site and off-site retailing are distinguished; and multi-channel approaches that have been used in retail test markets as a means to cost-effective growth within the industry are explored, with specific reference to how technology has created a new formula within a stagnant model. Fashion Retailing further explores back-of-house functions, such as human resources (hiring, payroll, job descriptions and salaries) and loss prevention from a management standpoint. Front-of-house functions, including merchandising (product analysis, fixturing, fixture sales tracking), visual merchandising (seasonal displays, windows, mannequins), circulation patterns and the relationship between the merchandising and management teams in driving overall sales and brand image, are explored across different retailers. Readers will gain a thorough understanding of how the retail model operates in an effort to continually capture the ever-changing market, as well as an insight into corporate social responsibility (CSR) and brand sustainability.

This book covers the History of Retailing and Corporate University that will lead you to the training and professional development of a well-established retail organization. Life in the Buying Office comes to grips with Retail Management as well as the importance of Customer Service. Providing excellent customer service is a culture that each retailer must embrace. I was able to snuggle the qualities of being a good retailer. I know what goes appropriately with what!! The professional development of the New York City retailing is always enormous because most of their corporate headquarters are in the metropolis. There's always opportunities to grow and learn with the fast paced environment. The fashion district is on the seventh avenue in Manhattan. Everyone is there and you need to be aggressive in all aspects of doing business with these vendors and account executives. It is definitely a different ball game in New York City as compared to the other metropolises in the country. I feel bittersweet about this industry because it is such a competitive career. If there's a felt need to kill each other, we will kill each other for the sake of promotion. I learned a lot from them especially when it comes to time management and conflict resolution. I became very aggressive too and very colorful when it comes to dealing with different kinds of people from different walks of life.
