Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globalization of housing finance led to the global financial crisis, which has created new barriers to adequate and affordable housing. It presents major challenges for current housing law and policy, as well as for the development of housing rights. This book examines and discusses key contemporary housing issues in the context of today’s globalized housing systems. The book takes up the challenge of developing a new paradigm, working towards the possibility of an alternative future. Revolving around three constellations of writing by diverse contributors, each chapter sets out a clear and developed approach to contemporary housing issues. The first major theme considers the crisis in mortgage market regulation, the development of mortgage securitization and comparisons between Spain and Ireland, two countries at the epicentre of the global housing market crisis. The second thematic consideration focuses on housing rights within the European human rights architecture, within national constitutions, and those arising from new international instruments, with their particular relevance for persons with disabilities and developing economies. The third theme incorporates an examination of responses to the decline and regeneration of inner cities, legal issues around squatting in developed economies, and changes in tenure patterns away from home-ownership. This topical book will be valuable to those who are interested in law, housing rights and human rights, policy-making and globalization.

Book excerpt: Although Belgium has only been an independent state since the 1830s, it has a long and complex past. This history is essential for understanding the complexities of issues that led to a devolution of the unitary Belgian state into a federation of linguistically based regions. In addition to the elements that contributed to Belgium's particular political evolution, the history which is traced in this book is a composite of many themes of broad historical interest and importance. Belgium: A History covers the gamut of Belgian history through dramas of religious and cultural conflict, intense localism, state building, uneven development, divergent class interests, war and domination, and finally, integration into a larger European community.

Book excerpt: The Giannettis have developed a home design style that embraces age, patina, weathered and worn surfaces, and rough surfaces. Patina Style is a color palette, a romance with subtlety, an attraction to natural materials and architectural details. It is at once old-world, contemporary, and mildly industrial. Patina Style gives insight into materials choices, methods and treatments that result in spaces that celebrate beauty in the old, the imperfect, the slightly roughed-up.

Belgium to day teems with writers Of merit; and to have dealt adequately with all of them would have needed a series Of volumes padded with academic detail. The publisher and the author have for the moment no farther ambition than to stimulate interest, and to give information which is so sadly lacking in this country that some Of the most distinguished of Belgian poets are living in exile in London un noticed and without a welcome, making munitions (all honour to them), or living as they can. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exclusive private itinerary leads the reader to the discovery of the refined style that characterises the places where life is lived in Brussels today. The Art of Living in Brussels reveals different facets of Belgium's capital and highlights the surprising mixture of classicism and contemporary style, of magnificence and minimalism that distinguish this cosmopolitan European city awarded UNESCO world heritage status owing to the stately architecture of Grande Place, heart of the metropolis. The city is renowned for its blend of gothic art, art nouveau and art deco, as well as for its medieval architecture, in a miscellany of different aesthetics where the splendid sixteenth and seventeenth century Flemish and Walloon mansions complement the delicate, almost mystic art nouveau style, whose extraordinary forerunner, Victor Horta, is a native son of Brussels. Author Fiametta d'Aremberg Frescobaldi offers a novel journey that takes the reader through some thirty homes designed by famous names and located in different areas of the city and its environs. Thus we are privy to the living quarters of passionate art collectors, seeing with our own eyes that the taste and personal history of those dwelling there is in perfect keeping with the distinguishing spirit of the capital: a passion for art. Shown for the first time ever, these exclusive places are captured in lovely pictures by photographer Jean Pierre Gabriel, who interprets them in a way that reflects their refined taste. Designers and artists featured include: Axel Vervoordt, Michael Borremans, Jan Fabre, Christine Bekaert, Anatoly Stolnikoff, Christophe Decarpentrie, Edouard Vermeulen, Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Adrien Blomme, Marc Corbiau and Bataille and Ibens. ILLUSTRATIONS: 250 colour

Focused on late 19th and early 20th-century France and Belgium, it addresses an overlooked area of modernity: the domestic sphere and its conception and representation in art, literature and material culture. Scholars from the US, UK, France, Italy, Canada and Belgium offer fresh and exciting interpretations of artworks, texts and modern homes. Comparative and interdisciplinary, it shows through a series of case-studies in literature, art and architecture, how modernity was expressed through domestic life at the turn of the century in France and Belgium.

Book excerpt: The essays in this collection are based on papers given at a conference on detective fiction in European culture, held at the University of Exeter in September 1997. The range of topics covered is designed to show not only the presence and variety of narratives of detection across different European countries and their different media (although there is a predictable emphasis on the novel). It also illustrates the fertility of the genre, its openness to a spectrum of readings with different emphases, formal as well as thematic. Approaches to detective fiction have often tended to confine them-selves to ‘symptomatic’ interpretation, where details of the fictional world represented are used to diagnose a specific set of social preoccupations and priorities operative at the time of writing. Such approaches can yield valuable insights. Nonetheless there is a risk of limiting the value of the genre as a whole solely to its role as a mirror held up to society. In this perspective, issues of structure and style are sidelined, or, if addressed, are praised to the extent that they approach invisibility — concision, spareness, realism are the qualities singled out for praise. The genre also gives much scope for formal innovation — and indeed has often attracted already established ‘mainstream’ writers and filmmakers for just this reason. The eclectic diversity of the detective narratives considered in this volume reveal the malleability of the traditional constraints of the genre. The essays bear rich testimony to the value of considering the interplay of thematic and structural issues, even in the most apparently unselfconscious and popular (or populist) forms of narrative. The patterns of reassurance, the triumph of intellect and the ordered, rational world ‘of old’ are now challenged by the need to foreground the problems, ambiguities and uncertainties of the self and of society. The plurality of meanings and the antithetical imperatives explored in these detective narratives confirm that the most recent forms of the genre are not mere palimpsests of their ‘golden age’ precursors. The subversion of traditional expectations and the implementation of diverse stylistic devices take the genre beyond mere homage and pastiche. The role of the reader/spectator and critic in conferring meaning is a crucial one.
