Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing new look at modernist architecture, emphasizing its diversity, complexity, and broad inventiveness Usually associated with Mies and Le Corbusier, the Modern Movement was instrumental in advancing new technologies of construction in architecture, including the use of glass, steel, and reinforced concrete. Renowned historian Kenneth Frampton offers a bold look at this crucial period, focusing on architects less commonly associated with the movement in order to reveal the breadth and complexity of architectural modernism. The Other Modern Movement profiles nineteen architects, each of whom consciously contributed to the evolution of a new architectural typology through a key work realized between 1922 and 1962. Frampton's account offers new insights into iconic buildings like Eileen Gray's E-1027 House in France and Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, California, as well as lesser-known works such as Antonin Raymond's Tokyo Golf Club and Alejandro de la Sota's Maravillas School Gymnasium in Madrid. Foregrounding the ways that these diverse projects employed progressive models, advanced new methods in construction techniques, and displayed a new sociocultural awareness, Frampton shines a light on the rich legacy of the Modern Movement and the enduring potential of the unfinished modernist project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost a century, the aim of Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects has been to make Copenhagen a better city to live in. The studio strives for a design that transcends time and manages a constantly changeable reality. In their view, good architecture emanates from function and is drawn from inside and out. Thus, it can be equal and afford everyone a good life. Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects is behind many of the most noticed contemporary community buildings in Copenhagen, such as the Danish Radio House, Copenhagen Airport, the residential area Krøyers Plads, the New North Zealand Hospital, the department store Illum and the world?s first cross-functional media house DR City.00The founder of the studio, Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen (1894?1984), was one of the most distinguished modern Danish architects. His conviction, that ?architecture is applied art for the people ? never a privilege for the few?, is still alive. This book covers the processes behind some of the buildings that have shaped modern Copenhagen.

Book excerpt: This book examines "new tenements"—dense, medium-rise, multi-storey residences that have been the backbone of European inner-city regeneration since the 1970s and came with a new positive view on urban living. Focusing principally on Berlin, Copenhagen, Glasgow, Rotterdam, and Vienna, it relates architectural design to an evolving intellectual framework that mixed anti-modernist criticism with nostalgic images and strategic goals, and absorbed ideas about the city as a generator of creativity, locale of democratic debate, and object of personal identification. This book analyses new tenements in the context of the post-functionalist city and its mixed-use neighbourhoods, redeveloped industrial sites and regenerated waterfronts. It demonstrates that these buildings are both generators and outcome of an urban environment characterised by information exchange rather than industrial production, individual expression rather than mass culture, visible history rather than comprehensive renewal, and conspicuous difference rather than egalitarianism. It also shows that new tenements evolved under a welfare state that all over Europe has come under pressure, but still to a certain degree balances and controls heterogeneity and economic disparities.

Book excerpt: Translated by Thomas McQuillan Architecture is a manifestation of the environment in which it is placed, observes distinguished architect and theoretician Christian Norberg-Schulz. A simple enough observation, but one that becomes subtle and nuanced in this landmark book which attempts to define, for the first time, what Nordic building really is. Norberg-Schulz begins by contrasting the natural world of the North with that of the Mediterranean, the Nordic unendingness against the sun-saturated and homogeneous South. Using themes such as "natural," "domestic," "universal," and "foreign," he finds the architecture of both regions sensibly related to their environments; but whereas the South lends itself to abstraction, the North is marked by variation, openness, and dynamism—by low light, forests, and space. Exploring the ways built experience "takes place," Norberg-Schulz charts the distinctive character of land and climate that distinguishes Denmark's, Sweden's, Finland's, and Norway's architectural traditions from each other and from those to the South. While each of these countries might be said to share regional traits, Norberg-Schulz identifies differences (the cultivated and closely detailed landscape and architecture of Denmark, the dramatic, structured forms of Norway) that allow him to account for the way individual Nordic architectures evolved.

Referring to the challenges faced by architects the world over to create buildings and cities that are sustainable and inclusive, it is a theme that has particular resonance in the world's northernmost regions, where many look to find benchmarks of innovation and problem-solving. Edited by David Sokol, each of the Nordic region's foremost architectural practices is presented through beautiful original imagery of their most iconic works, as well as insightful conversations with each architectural office.
