La inmigración masiva plantea el reto de la coexistencia pacífica de diferentes pautas culturales en un mismo espacio. La inmigración es un tema de máximo interés que ha originado cambios socioeconómicos importantes, como la ralentización del envejecimiento de las pirámides de edad o la incorporación de comportamientos específicos como son los hábitos alimentarios, además de su impacto en los principales sectores económicos. Desde una perspectiva de mercado, la población inmigrante representa un segmento de consumo relevante. Se trata de una población nueva a la cual hay que escuchar para dar respuesta a sus demandas y abastecer sus necesidades. Representa un segmento de consumo emergente con una demanda de nuevos productos con características muy particulares. De todos los posibles enfoques que pudieran darse para analizar los fenómenos de la inmigración, esta Tesis pretende descubrir y analizar los comportamientos de compra y consumo de los inmigrantes como un conjunto de segmentos de mercado con características bien diferenciadas que constituyen el segmento de población que más crece en cuantía y en significación económica, así como examinar qué factores hacen que los inmigrantes aceleren o difieren en el tiempo su integración social a través del consumo.

Book excerpt: In the decade between 1998-2008, Spain became the main destination for Ecuadorian migrants, and Madrid, Spain's capital, became the city with the largest Ecuadorian population outside of Ecuador. Through a combination of ethnographic research and cultural analysis, this book addresses the interconnections between spatial practices, cultural production, and definitions of citizenship in migration dynamics between Ecuador and Spain, showing how Ecuadorians are key actors in Madrid's recent urban history. Looking at the city as form and content, constitutive and constituting of ideological processes, each chapter analyzes the spatial practices of Madrid's Ecuadorian residents through various forms: the body, the home, public and leisure spaces, the city, the nation, and transnational circuits. Rather than addressing migrants as a general human type marked by (dis)placement, each chapter offers an illustration of how Ecuadorian migrants forge transnational processes through their everyday lives in specific time and place, and how these processes manifest culturally on both sides of the Atlantic.

Oliver Dunn received the PH.D. degree from Cornell University. He is Professor Emeritus in Purdue University and a longtime student of Spanish and early history of Spanish America. James E. Kelley, Jr., received the M.A. degree from American University. A mathematician and computer and management consultant by vocation, for the past twenty years he has studied the history of European cartography and navigation in late-medieval times. Both are members of the Society for the History of Discoveries and have written extensively on the history of navigation and on Columbus's first voyage, Although they remain unconvinced of its conclusions, both were consultants to the National geographic Society's 1986 effort to establish Samana Cay as the site of Columbus's first landing.
