The present editor, in preparing the book for an American public, has, by permission of the fellow-co-operators in Dublin, eliminated such of the English footnotes as were of interest principally to British readers or has incorporated them in his own. He has also moved up into the text many of Professor Gide's notes added by him at the time of the translation into English. Therefore at present there are only the two kinds of footnotes: those of the original author and those of the American editor. Without the painstaking work of the translators and those who assisted them, this American edition would probably not have been undertaken at this time. Without Professor Gide's help in reading through the proofs and making several valuable suggestions, the book would not have the contemporary value it now possesses. Finally, Dr. Warbasse, in contributing a preface and a chapter on "Co-operation in the United States," has made this book, always indispensible to the student of European Co-operation, an essential to those who are studying the Co-operative Movement in the United States. The present editor is honoured in being able to append a few additional American notes and to prepare this edition for the publisher. The two are not at all the same. The demo cratic rule that all men are equal means that men's being dif ferent cannot be made a basis for special privilege or for the invidious advantage of one man over another; equality, under the democratic rule, is the freedom and opportunity of each individual to be fully and completely his different self. De mocracy means the right to be different. The gospels of religion propound the same notion when they say that all men are equal before God and that salvation is open to all alike. The discoveries of science confirm the positions of democracy and religion. To the Nature which the scientist studies, each of her multitudinous components, as it is in itself, apart from every thing else, endeavors on its own power to sustain its identity, to live and to grow. If it perishes it is not because Nature has taken Sides against it; if it survives it is not because Nature has preferred and chosen it. Each succeeds or fails in its own right, and by its own energies. Its world was not made for it; but yet is made by it, as its activities combine or conflict with the activities of other beings, that environ it.
