Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumers' Cooperation Until the war, no speaker on Consumers' Cooperation could escape a question as pertinent as it was monoto nous: Why has success been so brilliant and con tinuous in England and other European countries while result-s are so meager in the United States? For the first time this form of Cooperation has become a serious working class interest. Extensively and in tensively it is on a scale which makes possible if not an answer, at least a more confident prophecy that we are to take our place in this world attempt to make democratizing industry something more than a phrase. I am far from giving it as a primary or even a sec ondary reason why cooperation so long halted in this country, but it has been sorely hampered by muddling together economic activities which have very little in common. A state of mind in which Profit-sharing, Labor Copartnership, Citrous Fruit Companies, Co operative Creameries and the like, are identical with Consumers' Cooperation, is one in which progress is embarrassed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumers Co-Operative Societies The excellent translation of Professor Gide's "Les Societes Cooperatives de consommation" which follows is the result of the labors of the staff of the Co-operative Reference Library, Dublin, Ireland. The present editor, in preparing the book for an American public, has, by permission of the fellow-co-operators in Dublin, eliminated such of the English footnotes as were of interest principally to British readers or has incorporated them in his own. He has also moved up into the text many of Professor Gide's notes added by him at the time of the translation into English. Therefore at present there are only the two kinds of footnotes: those of the original author and those of the American editor. Without the painstaking work of the translators and those who assisted them, this American edition would probably not have been undertaken at this time. Without Professor Gide's help in reading through the proofs and making several valuable suggestions, the book would not have the contemporary value it now possesses. Finally, Dr. Warbasse, in contributing a preface and a chapter on "Co-operation in the United States," has made this book, always indispensible to the student of European Co-operation, an essential to those who are studying the Co-operative Movement in the United States. The present editor is honoured in being able to append a few additional American notes and to prepare this edition for the publisher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumers' Cooperation: A Plan for the Negro The Negro has been described as the most needy segment of our American nation, a segment beset with social and economic problems of the greatest magnitude. In order to solve these problems, the Negro is in need of a p1an an economy-a system. The Negro was born into the capitalistic system, it is true, but he is really not a part of that system; for under it he has become the exploited not the exploiter. The words herein presented are designed to spell that plan for the Negro, which, reduced to two words, is consumers' cooperation. However, to make for a deep appreciation and a complete understanding of this plan, other discussions must of necessity precede. First a brief presentation of the nature and development of the general cooperative movement is set forth, followed secondly by the presentation of the economics of consumers' cooperation. It is expected that from these chapters one will glean the fact that consumers' cooperation is sound both in practice and in theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decline and Rise of the Consumer: A Philosophy of Consumer Cooperation The idea of this self-feeling of all persons is implicit in the concept of democracy and in the gospels of religion. The demo cratic rule that all men are equal is sometimes confused with the quite opposite idea that all men are the same and that any man can be substituted for any other so that his differences make no difference. The two are not at all the same. The demo cratic rule that all men are equal means that men's being dif ferent cannot be made a basis for special privilege or for the invidious advantage of one man over another; equality, under the democratic rule, is the freedom and opportunity of each individual to be fully and completely his different self. De mocracy means the right to be different. The gospels of religion propound the same notion when they say that all men are equal before God and that salvation is open to all alike. The discoveries of science confirm the positions of democracy and religion. To the Nature which the scientist studies, each of her multitudinous components, as it is in itself, apart from every thing else, endeavors on its own power to sustain its identity, to live and to grow. If it perishes it is not because Nature has taken Sides against it; if it survives it is not because Nature has preferred and chosen it. Each succeeds or fails in its own right, and by its own energies. Its world was not made for it; but yet is made by it, as its activities combine or conflict with the activities of other beings, that environ it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Co-Operation: The Hope of the Consumer All my life I have felt that the consumer was at an unfair disadvantage in buying. When, for eight years beginning in my teens, I owned and ran a country store, I never quite saw the equity of concealed profits which, on some things, were several times the percentage they were on others. In my twenty-odd years of advertising and publishing, and several years of editing a magazine devoted to sales promotion, I have always thought that the final consumer was treated too much as a mere incident, that he had too little voice. Always in my own buying I have felt a discontent with my total ignorance as to how much I was paying the mer chant for the distributive service he performed for me. Perhaps he was getting but five per cent of the retail price, perhaps sixty per cent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual on Cooperation There is little doubt on the part of the producer or consumer that some form of cooperation must soon be adopted to reduce the present waste and cost of food distribution. Just what cooperation is or just which form of it is most adaptable to our needs in New York State does not appear to be well understood and this circular is published with the hope of making the meaning of cooperation as clear as possible and to show some practical forms which are meeting with great success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Cooperate: The Full Fruits of Labor to Producer, Honest Value to Consumer, Just Return to Capital, Prosperity to All; A Manual for Cooperators The True Way Out of the evils that now a lict both producers and consumers is through an agency that already exists. It is right at hand. Its ways are the methods of peace. This agency requires no favored legislation, no political revolution, no social overthrow. It builds up instead of tearing down. Yet its success has been abundantly demonstrated under the most ad verse circumstances. It is as permanent as a human institution may be. It supplies its own capital, insures its own prosperity, and increases in practical beneficence with age. Thoroughly Christian in nature and applica tion, no phase of belief can take exceptions to it. Nor does it antagonize the reforms in politics and govern ment and taxation, in land or finance or transportation, that are now so prominent in the public mind.
