Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonic branding, guerrilla marketing, celebrity endorsements, customer service excellence and multi-channel advertising are just some of the popular sales techniques that currently promote consumerism in contemporary capitalism. Considerable energy is devoted to encouraging consumers to desire new fashions, to celebrate 'good design', to have feelings for brands and to immerse themselves in sensory experiences, without worrying about the ethics of their practices. Work, Consumption and Capitalism looks at how consumption is produced by focusing on the multiple kinds of work that make consumption possible, from advertising creatives to fashion designers, from self-service checkouts to the hippest barista in the coolest coffee shop. The text encourages students to consider the place of consumerism in global capitalism to develop their own answers to the question: How is consumption made possible? This wide-ranging study of the relations between work, consumption and capitalism draws on interdisciplinary research in cultural and economic sociology, history, marketing studies and cultural studies. With research tasks and discussion questions at the end of each chapter and case studies throughout, it stands as an accessible introduction for students of sociology, business and management, media and communication, cultural policy and cultural studies. Book excerpt: Although studies indicate the assumption of one single European market, other research emphasizes European countries have distinct market identities. Meanwhile, as individual countries begin to have a more widespread understanding of culture, global culture still remains unshared between countries. Consumption Culture in Europe: Insight into the Beverage Industry brings the most relevant theories about culture and European market segmentation as well as providing updated data for the evaluation and analyses of the European consumption patterns in the beverage market. This comprehensive collection is an essential tool for policy-makers and those interested in end-markets and consumer affairs.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 1,0, King`s College London (Lau China Institute), language: English, abstract: In the last decade China’s economic role has changed considerably. The rise of China is concomitant with the emergence of many giant Chinese corporations. Those corporations are dominating rankings of largest companies worldwide. To reinforce their economic position, Chinese companies aspire to build their own global brands, but few have been successful so far. This research paper seeks to provide an in-depth analysis of Huawei’s current brand positioning in Western Europe. To what extent has Huawei been able to create a popular brand? How are Huawei’s smartphones perceived in comparison to other global smartphone brands? How effective is Huawei’s branding strategy? Is the Huawei brand as a Chinese brand encumbered with country-of-origin effects? To answer these questions, the author applied a mixed methods approach comprising of an online questionnaire and interviews, which have been conducted from June to July 2014. The objective of the questionnaire is to depict the big picture of the Huawei brand among Western European consumers, while the interviews aim to explore relevant issues mentioned in the questionnaire. The main findings show that Huawei’s brand is not an established brand at the present moment, but rather is in a transitional stage. Huawei is perceived to have smartphones with an appealing design and sophisticated technological components, but overall lacks strong and succinct associations in comparison to other smartphone brand leaders. In addition, the COO impact and isolated branding approaches result in an ineffective brand strategy, which highlights Huawei’s need for a precise and consistent brand management.
