Unlike previous research, our model not only identifies what factors affect consumers search behavior, but also how they interact with each other. In particular, it emphasizes the interactive effect of prior market perceptions on the search process. We argue that when consumers have brand-specific prior distributions, then the existence of relative uncertainty among brands is necessary for a search to be useful. Thus we explain why product class involvement or low search costs may not be sufficient to induce large amounts of search activity, and why there may be an inverse-U shaped relationship between search activity and experience. We test our theory on consumers search behavior for new automobiles, using data collected contemporaneously with the consumers actual decision process. Our data support our theory.

Book excerpt: Why do consumers revisit previously searched products (“search revisits”) before making a purchase decision? Using a detailed click-stream data set from a popular hotel meta-search engine that uniquely identifies the information (photos, reviews, prices etc.) consumers obtained on every product search, we show the following. Search revisits are common, with half of all search sessions where consumers searched two or more hotels including at least one revisit. Surprisingly, most revisit behavior is not driven by consumers' desire to look at additional information about a product, as assumed in prior work. Rather, in 70% of all revisits, consumers look at a subset of the same information that they saw on previous searches. Also, products revisited for additional information are frequently purchased. In contrast, revisits for the same information are typically short, involve more expensive and lower quality products, and are unlikely to lead to a purchase. Based on these findings, we then investigate a number of explanations for the occurrence of search revisits. Our results are consistent with consumers revisiting either to obtain more information on options they prefer or (more frequently) to eliminate inferior options from their consideration sets (thereby saving on future decision costs). We end by discussing the implications of these and other findings for modeling consumer search behavior and by deriving managerial implications of consideration set elimination for marketing mix decisions, such as ad re-targeting.

This is particularly true in the case of goods whose characteristics consumers do not have complete information about, which they can only learn about after purchasing (experiencing goods). A trade mark quality guarantee facilitates consumers’ choice by sending quality signals. It also enables a trader of branded goods to differentiate the quality of his goods from those of his competitors. Accordingly, trade mark protection is said to enhance economic efficiency, and thus the production of quality goods, and reduce consumer search costs. In order for this to work, however, among other conditions, the trader must maintain consistent quality over time and across consumers. Otherwise, trade mark protection will enhance artificial product differentiation, and thus distort competition. To date, despite its profound significance, the quality guarantee is seen as performing an economic function that trade mark law is ill equipped to deal with. As a result, this function is not enforced under trade mark law. Contrary to mainstream thinking, this book argues that the quality function of a trade mark should be recognised and enforced through trade mark law. What is at stake is far from insignificant: it is about bridging the ever increasing gap between the legal rationales for trade mark protection and the economic consequences of this protection in practice. The book is also about how consumers should shape their relationship with trade marks and what role law should play in constructing that relationship. By giving independent legal substance to the quality function, trade mark law encourages a trader to improve the quality of his goods instead of simply improving the persuasive or advertising value of the mark, which, in turn, enhances artificial product differentiation, increases rather than decreases consumer search costs, and distorts competition.
